Top Gun: Maverick

I assume it's not worth reading the Peter Bradshaw review as it's 5 paragraphs where he details the plot in excruciating detail and then decides at the end he doesn't like it with no context or insight as to how he reached that decision.

Admission time - I've never liked Top Gun and always wondered why it is so universally praised.

As a kid when it came out I'd get goosebumps at that intro - it's so fucking good. Visuals and soundtrack matched perfectly. It's one of the greatest intros EVER.

The rest I just found kinda boring :(

The hard deck for this op was 10,000 feet, you knew it, you broke it, why?

Yep, it’s pretty rubbish really. I didn’t properly watch it until later in life and also found it pretty boring to be honest, so I don’t have the nostalgia for it that a lot of people seem to have.

@BitterToad How do you think I would fare, as someone who basically gets immediately and intensely motion sick if a camera so much as spins around? I'm really torn on the idea of seeing this at the cinema. Is it all loop-de-loopy in-cockpit stuff?

Tickets booked for next Friday.

I have no love for the original*. And having watched it again last week that view hasn't changed. I think it's ok though.

Excited for this though.

*Iron Eagle is better. 😉

There’s an absolute shit load of loop de loopy in cockpit stuff. It’s the main trick the film pulls and it pulls it brilliantly and often. The cameras are basically static, mounted to/inside the jets, a lot of the time but you’re seeing everything on screen inside them move a lot.

I have to wait a few weeks to see this, as I'm going to see it with my dad. Going to the cinema together is something my dad and I haven't done since Lethal Weapon 3. Yes, the '90s! Long overdue.

I've just seen this.

I like the first one, but have no great affection for it and haven't seen it in many, many years.

This is mega cheesy, super call backy war porn, but its incredibly well executed cheesy, call back heavy war porn.

Really, really enjoyed it - its a crowd pleasing roller coaster ride - Cruise is unsurpisingly very good as are the rest of the cast - shout out to Jon Hamm as Maverick's no nonsense boss.  Go biggest, loudest screen possible.

Thoughts on third act in spoilers and something from the start

Spoiler

the final mission is proper hold your breath/grab your seat stuff - really well built up throughout the film and then it really really delivers in the action and tension departments with a nice, more enjoyable final fight where you know its all going to turn out okay.

Also - the first ten minutes tells you exactly what the film is going to be - bonus points at the start for Ed Harris giving no fucks and not moving a muscle when Maverick buzzes him despite the sonic boom rattling everything else around him.
