I started to watch it but the opening scene with him living in an air hanger in the Mojave Desert then putting on his leather jacket over his white tshirt made me cringe and had to turn it off immediately. Tortured capitalist nomad soul.

Do you love yourself? Like, at all?

It is a bit of a cringe fest, wrote about this in the other thread but it's essentially this throughout...

Tom Cruise "I'm going to jump over this gap..."

Random 1 "You can't jump over the gap, it's not possible! Don't be silly Tom, go home."

Tom Cruise looks at gap,

Random 2 (slow pan on amazed face) "He's not...he's not going to..."

Tom Cruise jumps over gap

Random 3 "I can't believe Tom just jumped over the gap!! How incredible is Tom?!!" followed by uplifting music

It's that over and over for 2 hours.

If I have a criticism of the film, it's that it seems really engineered, rather than organic. It's like you can see the plot points sliding smoothly into place at just the right time to tug on the intended heartstring/emotion/audience response. It doesn't feel natural. It's manipulative.

But that's all plots, really. This is just more noticeable because of quite how slick it is. And when the manipulation is done to such phenomenal effect, it's frankly churlish to let that slight artificialness get in the way of the experience.

I haven't seen it since the cinema, and would like to watch it again, but there's no way my crappy sound system can produce the same effect as the cinema did, and that was so good. I'm apprehensive, because I think it'll lose such a lot of the impact.

My Wife and I did not go to the cinema so had to watch it at home (with just TV Speakers) and were still blown away by how good it is.

It made me want to buy a proper sound system just to feel it.

Watching again. Hangman is still "needs a smack in the face" smug, even when you know the outcome.

Also, I've met a few RAF pilots due to my step uncle serving in the Gulf and they all think they're a Maverick or a Hangman but really they're actually Bob

This film is a total ladder. You start off relatively grounded and by the end you’re entirely okay with the spectacular silliness at the end. This is a movie I look forward to enjoying in the future with beers and popcorn, possibly outside somewhere with other people around to clap and holler.

Plenty of the outdoor cinema companies are advertising dates for it already.

I have an allergy to to Cruise. His cheesy smile makes me heave, and his hyper-WOOOOOOO! attitude, whilst at the same time being woefully un-aware and intolerant of criticism, brings me out in a rash. I mostly even hate his “good” films. Plus he’s a dodgy cultist.

Top Gun: Maverick is fucking brilliant though.
