Saw this tonight with my brother, and we both loved it. One thing that I couldn't believe I didn't know from the first movie or had just plain forgotten...

Maverick's name is Pete.

 

In fact, in relation to the above spoiler...

it became really distracting how many time Jennifer Connelly called Maverick "Pete" in that first meeting in the bar. The way the whole thing was shot, I thought for a few seconds that this was some weird dream sequence and she wasn't really there.

There's the theory that the whole film post the test flight is a death dream. That blew my mind.

It’s not every film where someone ejects from a plane travelling 7000 mph though right? It’s just a fun theory and the guys on the Rewatchables podcast summed it up nicely:

- Maverick meets a lovely lady from his past who single-handedly runs the most amazing bar, isn’t an alcoholic and has a teenage daughter who isn’t angst ridden and is cool with their relationship. And her mum drives a vintage Porsche.  He then goes on a redemption arc to sort his relationship with Rooster and they complete the mission with no casualties. It’s all a bit too perfect.

Anyway it’s a fantastic film and will probably be my film if the year. When I was 8 I was a massive plane fan probably due to that Action Force Skystriker Jet (that I never owned). I begged my mum to take me

to see it and we went to the Sidcup Cannon and she tried to talk the usher into letting me in despite it being a 15. It was a no go of course and I had to wait for the VHS. Sadly neither the cinema or my mum are no longer with us. Thankfully only one of them got turned into a Wetherspoons. I had my own redemption arc by taking my 8 year old son to see it, he flipping loved it. I shed a tear.

I thought this was really good. I wasn’t going to bother originally as I’m not a big fan of the original, but the great word of mouth convinced me to give it a go. 
 

As others have said, it’s very refreshing to see a big blockbuster movie with a clear premise, neat 3 act structure and action scenes where you can actually tell what the hell is happening. It was funny and charming and I cared enough about the non Maverick characters for it to work. The last act was fucking electric, brilliant film making and I’m really glad I caught it in the cinema.

 

I personally felt the middle was a little baggy and dull, I didn’t care very much about his relationship with Penny. I honestly assumed she was the love interest from the original as I haven’t seen it in 20 years and Jennifer Connely is such an era appropriate actress. I just assumed that whatever setup their relationship required was probably stuff I don’t remember from the original, so finding out she’s a new character I’m kind of shocked that they didn’t give that more effort as it was so central to the second act.

 

The beginning and end were perfect though. I actually loved how subtle it was with the stuff with him and rooster. That early shot of the roof lifting off the hut was so good, and I really liked the diner scene, outside of it using that same joke with the kid that I think I’ve seen in at least two other movies (though I can’t place them).

 

Great movie overall, 8.5/10

Technically she's not a new character, but her character is a callback to a blink-and-you'll-miss-it line in the original...

Yeah the entire theory:

is completely undermined by the very opening shots of the movie.

 

The whole movie is a nostalgic dream, in only the way Hollywood can make life seem.

It’s a fun theory, and enjoy reading the takes on it. But prefer to think of the film as a celebration of Maverick, and Cruise himself as someone who is pushing the envelope of modern action filmmaking.

 

Next summer’s Mission: Impossible looks entirely bonkers, with stunts galore where the safety officer almost definitely said, ‘I’m not sure about this Tom’.

 

See parallels with Jackie Chan in the willingness to push far past what should be possible in the name of entertainment (albeit Chan probably never even had a safety officer until he worked within Hollywood’s system) The risks they take us appreciated but maybe not fully until they’re not around or too old to go balls out. Hopefully there’s someone who will take up the mantle.

Finally had a chance to stick this on the main TV last night. Only wanted to watch the first 10 minutes or so to see how it looked on a regular screen and ended up watching an hour or so chuckling at Maverick's maverickness, swooning over Hangman and swooning even more over the F-18s and Darkstar. Were it not for a 6am start I'd have watched the whole thing; happy that the film's magic is intact.

 

Might as well start thinking about the other nine slots in my films of the year list because number one is a lock.

Really looking forward to this being released on streaming services. My local cinema is showing the original and this as a double bill later in the month - very tempted to take my son, wo has seen neither, so that I can see it for a second time as well.

I don't get the love for this. I saw it at the cinema. It just sort of washed over me. I didn't feel invested or involved. Watching it at home last night I just though "How many times can you attack the Death Star in one film?" That and all the women were covered up to the point of almost wearing Burkha's. It's an 80s film struggling to survive in the 2020's.
