I want to see it again but my mood so was so strongly affected for all of Friday and Saturday after seeing it on Thursday (I felt really depressed and had alot of emotions I hadn't felt for a couple of months) that I think I'll wait till it's available on Blu-Ray

Finally got around to seeing this tonight.  It was fucking shit.

 

LOL not really.  Loved every second of it.  Going to try and convince my kids to come and see it on Sunday.  Maybe at the IMAX if we can get tickets.  So good.

Just watched it too, would definitely go right back in and watch it again! 

I would put the first movie in my all time Hollywood greats, it’s up there with Predator and Aliens for me as utterly defining action movies. And it’s the whole package that makes it so great, and that’s what they’ve captured again here. 
 

It’s been a pretty much unanimous “loved it!” in here and I’m no different. It was almost everything I could’ve wanted from a Top Gun sequel. 
 

And yes as a long time Ace Combat player, the whole thing had me going “this is like Ace Combat”, and “I could do that in Ace Combat!”

at first I even thought they were going to go through a long narrow shaft to destroy the target, like the Megalith in AC04


A worthy sequel with so many good moments and callbacks, without laying it on too thick. 
 

if I had a criticism it’d probably be that the soundtrack isn’t as strong.

One had to be a two seater because the second seat in one of the planes had to be for the guy who used the laser guider for the bomb.  The task couldn't be done by someone who also had to fly the plane.

Aye- but why was there a one-seater attached to fly with each two-seater?

Also- there was a line at the start explaining why they couldn't use F35s for the mission- something like the location was GPS blocked or something? Is anyone in here able to explain what that meant?

IIRC the one-seater was for the pilot who would drop the bomb after the target had been marked by the two-seater.  The pilot in the one-seater is able to both fly and drop the bomb - so, no need for a two-seater/no need to risk two lives.

F35s use GPS for their weapons systems; because GPS blockers were used by the enemy, the F35 wouldn't be effective.  This is a key reason why they went with F18s, which use laser guidance systems unable to be blocked by the enemy's GPS jammers.

Well that was fucking amazing….

 

Loved the Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer reference at the start, seeing Val Kilmer after all he’s been through was really touching. 

 

It’s a great mix of nostalgia and modern film, also gave me a tinge of sadness knowing that we’re watching people who are getting old, but it was like seeing an old friend you’ve not seen in years.

 

Definitely one to see in the cinema. I’d give it a record breaking 11 bags of popcorn out of 5.

They didnt need 2 two-seaters but they did need to have a wingman, the second Weapons Systems Officer would have been surplus to requirements (not to mention a difficult question to answer if they didn't come home)

Seen this twice now, the second time was even better as I could really focus on the details. The flying scenes really are epic.

There are quite a few contrivances in the film to make it more cinematic and I think this is just one of those. The 2-seaters could have dropped the bombs themselves and lased them in (self-designation) as there are 2 people. You can see they are carrying bombs but don’t drop them (in my head they’re saving them for a re-attack if the first ones miss). I suspect having the single-seater drop the bombs while the 2-seater lased (buddy-lase) was just to add to the drama. Similarly some of the formations they were flying weren’t realistic, but again that’s probably so it looks better on screen and doesn’t expose real tactics.

 

I think the justification for not using F-35s is also really just there to allow them to use F-18s, there aren’t any 2-seat F-35s for them to film in.

 

Overall though I thought it stretches credulity just enough to be a fantastic spectacle without going over the top. The end fight with the SU-57 was immense.

Made a rare trip to the cinema to see this and glad I did because the vistas on the big screen and the roar of the jets on the sound system was *chef's kiss*.

 

Thoroughly enjoyed it. I can't tell you how refreshing it was to watch a modern big budget mainstream studio film that just happily told a nice simple A to B to C story without numerous superfluous sub-plots setting up 3 films and 5 TV series.

Fury road was wank. This is actually pretty good.
