Top Gear - Series 24

TBH you could have let it go away for a year or so and gained the same result.

I fully expect the Evans TG to be a disaster. And that Amazon will throw obscene amounts of money at making all the outlandish things they wanted to do* on TG but were not allowed.

*This will probably be both good and bad in equal meausure

To be fair, the guy likes cars. But I mean... what the fuck are they thinking?

Would love to be proven wrong, but I strongly suspect I wont be. This show is going to tank.

I liked LeBlanc in Episodes, but this is hardly the same thing.

I expect this is an attempt to keep Top Gear popular in overseas territories. Having a face who people in America will recognise to talk about cars and interview other celebs rather than Evans who, whilst a competent presenter, is unlikely to have the same kind of recognition abroad.

I think it is a really interesting choice. Will likely be great or awful. Looking forward to see Le Blanc in the annual TG special camping in some remote jungle somewhere...

“Matt’s a lifelong fellow petrolhead and I’m thrilled he’s joining Top Gear. Acting out our craziest car notions on screen is a dream job and I know we’ll both be debating some epic road trip ideas. We can’t wait to share what we’ve been up to on screen later this year,” Evans said.

That all sounds very similar to old Top Gear to me.

The thing with this is... they sold well in overseas territories with three 'Little Englanders' with virtually zero celeb appeal. The Top Gear brand, one would imagine, holds a fair bit of cache with or without Clarkson (though admittedly, less without).

I'm hugely skeptical about this. Clarkson was obviously a demanding and stroppy little shit when he wanted to be, but Joey is from Hollywood...

Anyway, lets see who the others are I guess.

It probably should be like the old original Top Gear. To try and emulate what Clarkson and the others did just won't work. You will see that stuff on their show. Just make an entertaining car show without all the silliness. Great locations, great cars and be informative.

I'd watch that. I'll also watch the Amazon one.

I don't know if the numbers of people who watched Clarkson Top Gear will be interested in a sensible car programme though!

I think Le Blanc's a great choice. He's a petrolhead and big enough star to complement Evans well. His chilled manner could work with Evans zany neurosis too.

Another line up of motoring journalists? Glad they're trying something different. Much as I love Sabine and Harris they're hardly charisma magnets.

Coulthard definitely isn't doing it since he's signed up to present and commentate on F1 for C4 this year.

I think the rest are just rumours going around.

It actually wouldn't surprise me to have a system of recurring contributors. Evans would present every show and then people like LeBlanc might only pop in for the occasional episode or feature without doing every show. It would allow for a big cast of presenters to utilise and would get away from the shadow of Clarkson, Hammond and May Top Gear. For people like LeBlanc it might also be more attractive to have occasional Top Gear work rather than the fairly busy schedule that Top Gear of old used to work on for its three presenters.

It'd be interesting if the format goes from knowledgeable car folk engaging in scripted comedy hijinks to an actual comedy actor talking about cars... :P

Nevertheless, it could be okay - I'll reserve judgement until I've seen it (and maybe try Amazon Prime for the other show...)

Le Blanc's knowledgable about cars, passionate at least. Given the almost complete consumer irrelevance of Top Gear when actual car journalists do it I can't see how it matters. It's all about the chemistry of the presenters.

You can say that again.

So one would be the Doug Stanhope, one would be the Philomena Cunk, and - uh-oh - one would be the Tim Key.

My first response was that sounds fucking terrible. So it will probably turn out ok.

The more I think about it I actually want to see it now. Mainly because I can't see how it's going to work.
