FINAL FANTASY XIII £5.99

Final Fantasy XIII-2 £7.49

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII £9.99

I'm shockingly getting a lot of joy out of FF XIII despite it being "the worst one". You start off wondering where the game actually is, mashing to auto-attack to the next long, confusing cutscene ...until the battles add layer upon layer and you get into a groove of this almost anti-game.

It looks very nice on a Series X. It's on Game Pass now, but I bought them up since the FF games seem to drift in and out of it.

It's not the worst one at all, it was just out of step with the trends of the time I think. Just as everything was going open-world, FFXIII landed as an almost entirely linear experience and it got a lot of flak for that. (It does actually open up quite a bit in the second half, but most people had abandoned it long before that point).

Nowadays of course with everything seemingly consisting of dull open worlds littered with pointless icons, a nicely-paced action adventure feels quite refreshing. It's got the best combat system in the entire series, graphically it barely seems to have aged a day and its world and setting is quite unique. I played through it recently and thoroughly enjoyed it, and I've seen a few other people reappraising it too.

I've always sung the praises of FFXIII, since it was first released.

On that note, I think the reverse is happening right now where some people are dismissing a lot of open-world games that are actually totally fantastic.

You were right. I played through FFXIII last year and it looks absolutely GORGEOUS Enhanced to 4k (or a far higher res at least) with the auto-HDR working absolute wonders in this game. It looks beautiful even for a 2022 game. But most of all it was a very fun and refreshing RPG romp after so so so many open world affairs the last few years. It was nice to break up the sandbox monotony with a curated and spectacular linear experience.

You might be right about a few sandbox games being unfairly dismissed right now but that's what happens when a genre gets oversaturated. Hopefully those games will resurface in a few years just like FXIII thanks to BC.

Very good. For some reason I thought they were revisions of some description rather than actual sequels.

All kidding aside, it's because each "proper" numbered Final Fantasy sequel is a completely new game. New setting, new story, new characters, new systems, new style. With X (ten) they decided to make a direct sequel for the first time. An actual continuation of the story in X. So it had to be called X-2. Same with XIII, the two strangely numbered sequels are direct sequels to XIII.

All this Final Fantasy XIII talk reminded me that I'd been planning to start XIII-2 for a while.

Happy to report that not only has it had the same 4K/HDR glow-up as the original XIII, this one also now runs at 60fps on Series X. It's a ridiculously nice-looking game given that it was originally a 360 game, and the framerate increase really makes the combat feel snappy. Looks like a really good sequel so far too.

Why isn't Skate 2 ever on sale?

Likely withdrawn due to licensing, as it's not available for any price.

When that happens using a disc is your only option so I'd act quick on the link @Super Craig posted. Retro disc prices tend to rise lately.

Bloody hell whoever said Assassin's Creed 1 looks amazing in Xbox BC was telling the truth. 4k/60 and it's beautiful. Really really surprising. Also fun seeing how ambitious all their ideas were back then, trying to make it feel like an assassin's immersive sim almost (flawed as hell of course) while from 2 onwards it progressively became something else entirely with all the streamlining.

The first AC really suffered from a combination of being on PS360 and trying something that hadn't really been accomplished up until then - an open world historical Hitman simulator was such a big challenge (and stemming from a Prince of Persia concept) they should've really reduced the scope a lot more. I love the AC2 trilogy but yeah it's easy to see why they bit off more than they could chew.

I think what AC is now and how Ubisoft make games means it's unlikely we'd ever get that kind of vision fulfilled. Would love to see it tackled again though.

One of the possible outcomes if Ubisoft had stuck with the original vision of AC1, is a game similar to the recent Hitman trilogy. Only each compact area/level in Hitman would instead be a city like you see in AC1. And in each city there woul be multiple contracts/assassinations to complete by doing research first - kinda like discovering and following a lead in the recent Hitman trilogy, with the effectiveness/difficulty of the actual assassination dependent on how many leads and possibilities you uncovered. That's what the intention of AC1 feels like to me in hindsight over a decade later.

I always felt the first Assassin's Creed reminded me of the original Crackdown, in that the core focus was just "kill these targets", with the rest left pretty freeform.

Yeah. That would totally have been my Assassin's Jam if they'd built on that.
