What do we all reckon is the best Timesplitters then?

Future Perfect all the way. From memory (it's been over 10 years since I've played them), it takes everything that was good about the second and amplified it. It was a staple for me and my pals to play on games nights.

Holy shit Timesplitters 2 has aged so so badly 🤣. I literally loaded up the first level, walked in front of a camera and then basically couldn't aim at anyone. So bad. So so bad.

It's definitely made me appreciate how brilliant Halo was and is though.

I'll be getting Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed for £3.74, and TimeSplitters Future Perfect for £2.09.

Me too.  I dare say this is the hottest Microsoft-related purchase we'll see this week.

Agreed. Especially when the perfect dark xbla release plays pretty well and upscales to 4k. It still has fiddly aiming when you hold left trigger but not nearly as bad. Also, what maniac designed these controls? Y is reload, X and B do nothing. Change weapons by taking your hands off the stick and using the dpad! Click in a stick for fine aim. It's all very unique!

I had to switch the controls to use the left trigger for the fine aiming, because the existing setup is just too alien to my 2022 mind.

Can it be changed to hold, rather than toggle? I still found that a bit of a pain.

It does indeed. It's up there with Final Fantasy XIII in the "there's no way a game this old should look this good" stakes.

Saw you've been playing FF13 a lot recently, I revisited it not long ago as well. Despite the linearity that goes on for far too long, I've always really enjoyed it to the point where I've completed it twice in the past over the years and am now going for the completion.

Don't remember hitting the same difficulty spikes I am at the moment though, literally spent most of last night fighting tooth and claw to win battles and/or running away from them lol.

Do think it's an underrated game though.

Both Risen games are in the sale and I have a vague recollection that they were janky but okish RPG's. Any reason why 2 is cheaper than the first one, is it worse in any way?

Yes.  Probably easier though. Risen 1 us proper old school and 2 is a bit more of an action game   I fired up 1 and it runs fine  I simply haven't the patience these days

Agreed with @Cosmic_Guru. Risen 1 gives dat Morrowind feeling, scratches the same kind of itch. 2 is less RPG, more an attempt to imitate a big budget action title.

At "SOME" point, I WILL finish FF XIII, I started it back up once I got the One X, and it retrieved my 7 year old save file, so yeah, it's one of the few things on the Series X I simply refuse to delete, in the event I do eventually get round to having a go.

It looks awesome though, you're right 100% , it has no right looking as good as it does!!

I've been playing FFXIII since the end of last year, it holds up really well. I don't mind the linearity for the first 30 hours, but I do mind how hand holdy it is. And yes, it's still utterly stunning

Yeah the enchancements it gets via back compat make it almost look like a modern game. Animation and background/environmental detail is the main giveaway but it seems in those days square loved using way higher res textures on characters than was needed for the platforms it was on, they totally hold up to 4k.

Be aware that Risen was considered very janky even back then! And the 360 version more so than the pc version. I think it had a bug with its gamma settings. @Cosmic_Guruknows more about that, having encountered it back in the day. (Yes, I remember :))

I don't recall a gamma bug. Game is just extremely slow by modern action standards and char is awkward to control  like a container ship or summat.  I played up to being escorted into the bandit camp and that was enough.

Then I was thinking of someone else and maybe even a different game! I recalled something about the game on 360 being so dark in interiors, even with gamma maxed out,, that it was quite a challenge to complete dark dungeons and such.

Yes, the controls are a result of an inexperienced developer mapping mouse look to an analogue stick without any optimization. Takes some getting used to. I ended up playing on PC using mouse and keyboard and had a blast

Don't blame you! My last save was on the 360 and had no choice but to start again. Good for the cutscenes, bad because once you realise there's literally no point in fighting battles until you get to a certain point it becomes a bit of a slog.

I've come out the other side now though, and at one of the classic grinding spots so going to spend a good few hours there until I'm a bit beefier. I do remember some of the last boss fights being a real bitch.

Mine was from the 360 also, it just somehow ended up on M$ servers, I'd have NEVER started it again, I am right at the 30+ hour mark, out of all the corridor stuff.

Oh holy shit Max Payne 3 is utterly incredible. I don't think we've seen a shooter since that feels so chunky and brutal. Leaning out of a helicopter with a big rifle shooting lads in the legs so that they tumble down stairs. Grabbing a revolver, shooting a guy in the head and then just pumping him full of bullets just to see the animation as he drops. As much as I feel like a psychopath typing that it fits quite well with Max as a character; Rockstar have managed to make Max Payne one and two Max look like a down to earth multi faceted character. 3's is dark and ridiculous and hideously offensive and completely stupid at all times. And I feel like they're aware of this, too. One minute he'll be hanging from a helicopter shooting rockets, the next he's dropping two feet from said helicopter and doing an old man noise whilst clutching his back. The story feels both properly grim and utterly hilarious. Current picks;

I wouldn't have know right from wrong if one of them was helping the poor and one was banging my sister.

We don't have time for America!

Her outfit left little room for imagination, let alone food.

I remember quite enjoying the game back in the day but not thinking it was crazy special. I bought it in the most recent sale and can easily see myself flying through it over the weekend and loving every second.

I tried three times to finish the last boss off but there’s this one  instant kill move it does. In the end I just watched the ending on YouTube and moved on with my life.
