Xbox One backwards compatibility - sales until the heat death of the universe

what about if the SCARLETT backwards compatibility just works?

as in, you put in the disc ( from the previos three gens, if you still have it), and the game loads fine.

Don't need to worry about licensing then, surely?

Ok I'm going to put on my guesswork, speculation and half remembered facts hat: I'd expect it'll be exactly like it is now, which means you put the disc in but it actually downloads everything from the Xbox store. AFAIK that means the games have to be cleared before they can be out on there. The only games I've seen not appear immediately for purchase are the ones that have 2 discs, and they turn up eventually.

I wonder where that leaves the future Xbox 360 Games with Gold titles? If there's no scope for them to be backwards compatible will they try and phase the 360 side out of GwG?

Good point. Of those that haven't been given away already, there must only be a subset of them for which they can get agreement from the publisher to "give away" with Gold.

I think GwG's days are numbered anyway, with Game Pass being the new kid in town. I imagine at some point it'll become impossible to get Xbox Live Gold WITHOUT some form of Game Pass being included, or vice versa.

Fair play on calling it a day, they have done a good job.  Some titles I'm sad will never see the light of day (Need for Speed Hot Pursuit) but it seems with most missing titles it is down to licensing rather than any decision MS have made.

I think you're right.  With Xbox Live slowly being subsumed into Gamepass, I'd expect GWG to go that way as well.

It had severe performance issues when it was only on Rare Replay, and then on BC for a long time also. At some point they ramped up the quality level of the BC programme and went back to most if not all games already on there, and patched them all up. Since then Nuts & Bolts was fine, as you say. The X came out after that patch iirc. Anyway, Enhanced makes it way better still and that game truly deserves it:)

Microsoft is now focusing on making these titles work perfectly fine on Project Scarlett, it’s next-gen Xbox console. The company is focusing on allowing thousands of Xbox titles from all the four generations work on Scarlett. “As such, we have now shifted our focus to help make the games you love playing on Xbox One compatible with future Xbox hardware. After this week, we have no plans to add additional Original Xbox or Xbox 360 titles to the catalog on Xbox One, but we’re excited to continue our work on Xbox compatibility across platforms and devices, which remains a top priority,” Microsoft said.

I'm going to hang on to the fact that they're saying BC on the Xbox One is finished.  I wonder if we'll get more eventually because Scarlett will allow more headroom for emulation. Most of their problems we licensing but I wonder if there were any games that just couldn't be emulated with the power currently available.

Asura's Wrath is the most brilliantly over the top anime cutscene you'll ever sort of play, never seen anything else with this sort of presentation. Was just going back to the finish off the final couple of chapters last night on 360 as it happens, Asura's arms haven't fallen off for a while but there's still time! Bear in mind there's some near essential DLC that continues and finishes the story off (Episode Pack: Part IV).

I'll get it finished tonight and stick it in trading, it's well worth experiencing.

My hope is they have a massive blow out at the launch of the Scarlett for 360 BC games. Adding their entire MS catalogue at the very least (where are my Amped games?!?)

Amped would be great but licensing issues perhaps?

Amped 2 was made compatible on 360 (although didn’t support its 720p mode from the original Xbox), so I’m disappointed with didn’t come to the XBone.

And with the Cave shooters, Guwange made the list but the rest didn’t?! Weird!

Think MS did a great job with this! However I do think it was a bit of a cover up for not having enough games out there and a way to try keep and move those still using 360s over.

Hoping going forward with any BC MS do in future it will be emulation done the way IMHO it should be... put a disk in or run an existing game. Ie: Everything should work out of the box without any re-compiling etc. Still  a bit gutted I can't play Project Gotham 4 anywhere else but on my 360 (which I still have :) )

This team has been a marvel, and I'm glad they're focusing on ensuring the full XB1 catalogue is compatible with Scarlett, or I'm sure that's what I read. That in itself would be a first. I'm sure some will get the X type treatment we've seen on 360 titles.

Honestly, this commitment to bringing it all forward with you means I'm committed to my library with them.

Yep. Like I said earlier, once I get my Scarlett I can simply continue where I left off, all my games and saves are there once I sign in. No need to keep the XB1 for anything whatsoever. That and Game Pass which just gave me three years worth of new Microsoft releases alongside hundreds more for 1 quid*, means that it's settled which next gen console I'm buying first.

* Just think, all the launch games!

That would be a bit of a backwards step no? Without them doing their recompiles you wouldn't get the huge advantages like the 4K resolution bump, improved texture filtering etc.

I fully expect Sony to do it that half assed way because they can get away with it.

Perhaps but it would mean that all games you own just work without having to wait for MS or hope that your favourites get converted.

I don't expect it to be so much of an issue on the next iteration of hardware though as it's all x86 going forward. I expect they might also release patches for upscaling the graphics to 4K etc too.

Yes, the team's moved on to ensuring that every Xbox One title works on Scarlett.

Shame this video is a fluff piece.  A proper behind the scenes of their incredible efforts would be nice way to finish.

People like @MW_Jimmy skewed the stats by playing it repeatedly for 2 years. :(

Haha. 'Too Human' has a certain amount of janky charm and feels oddly relaxing to play with its right-stick only combat.

Anyway, free for everyone so give it a five minute whirl and then switch if off when the ten minute respawn animations kicks in!
