Final Fantasy VII Remake

I gave up on this after a few hours when it first appeared on PS+, and only reinstalled it when the PS5 update came out to see what it looked like.

What a plonker I've been, missing out on this all this time.

Mind you, this way I played and finished it in super slick 60 fps mode so I guess it was worth waiting for.

I bought and completed the original back in all its three disc glory on PS1 and this does it justice and then some.

Is the DLC worth buying?

I know the story is changed somewhat and I must admit, I did have to read a "what the fuck happened at the end" guide to make sense of things as it's been 20+ years since I last played it.

Are they actually working on more parts to this or is that it?

edit - I'm playing the PS5 version which was the free upgrade to the PS4 version that originally came with PS+

Is the expansion pack the only add-on I can buy? If so, what's intergrade?

Narrator: He was not able to see the improvements

I mean, I shouldn't underplay the boost to 60fps, obviously. But I'd have been miffed if I paid full whack for it instead of playing the PS4 version!

Found another improvement..

For those playing the PS5 version, don't forget to use the activity cards to resume, it loads back into the game in seconds. Awesome! (Moot if you are using rest mode, but if not, it's easy to forget)

Just hit Wall Market (and its gym) and seeing that this is a major highlight I think I'll just skip the rest. It's just so linear and the world is so constricting. It's quite telling that the relatively(!) open Wall Market is still pretty closed compared to other RPGs (ES, Witcher). Plus, the filler material has become too annoying for me to carry on.

It's certainly a nice, decent game though. Just one that isn't up there with the genre's best.

I'm loving these more constrained linear games at the moment to be honest. I'm bloody loving this.

I can't be arsed with open world games at the moment. Most of them just annoy me.

I think I might be cool with this too, if it weren't for the filler material and stupid quests. The combination of the two is just too much for me though.

In Remake's defence, the original game was just as linear in the moments that the remake recreates.

I mean, the majority of FFVII was pretty restrictive unless you count things like "freedom to choose which Huge Materia to get first". Even when you have a world map nothing moves forward until you visit the next plot-critical event.

Sure. Maybe you can't even blame the developers for it. It's just that the RPG world has moved on quite a bit and some bits of FF7 are hard to stomach, especially in a Remake.

It’s a story driven game though and not a world driven game.  Maybe there’s something in whether/how the RPG space is split more clearly into subgenres and the communication thereof, given the obvious expansion of the space and related diversification in audience segmentation.

Also, Remake already toys with fast-travel, and the original's world was pretty lifeless even when you could go everywhere. Unless an event is taking place, each location is home to a bit of NPC dialogue and some shops (you can already feel that a bit if you're at the end of Remake and warping around with fast-travel.) But that's kind of standard for old-school JRPGs.

I guess if they keep the old-school approach it will make development of those bits straightforward, but it's not like you needed to be hopping around the world during the first hours of FFVII.

I think this is a big revelation, it's not REALLY an open world game. Unlike say.... oh let's go with a GTA5 or Far Cry.  Where the point is the world and you might progress some of what passes for a story when you feel like it.

FF is more a Monkey Island with a different control scheme in terms of how it progresses than is a Fallout or Skyrim.

There's an anniversary stream tonight. Some people are expecting a Crisis Core remake 🤔 , and it's been a hot minute since any Ever Crisis news... but most viewers will be expecting a glimpse of "Remake 2".

Then again the stream could consist of random interviews and some pimping of merch you can't get outside Japan, so keep your expectations in check. ;)

That's Ever Crisis - still in development at the moment. The original trailer didn't say anything more specific than "Available 2022", so it might feature in the broadcast?

Ah. I thought Ever Crisis was the battle royale one.

Anyway, I'd be interested to play Ever Crisis if it takes the best bits of the original game and provides a modern translation of the script. According to the article I posted it's a 'just the highlights' version, so presumably no world map exploring.

Welp, there it is. "FFVII Rebirth" is coming next Winter - the follow up to Remake. Other announcements:

  • Intergrade coming to Steam on the 17th
  • Merch pimping: Play Arts Kai figures, a Buster Sword clock, a FFVII compilation vinyl
  • New content (weapons, maps) for FFVII The First Soldier
  • "FFVII Ever Crisis closed beta test in 2022"
  • Crisis Core coming to PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and Steam
  • FFVII: Rebirth coming Next Winter

The trailer will probably be available on its own shortly, so I (or someone) can drop it in here.

Next winter…. And it will of course slip. So no chance of seeing it before March 2024.

Pissed at no Xbox availability tbh, yea, I’ve got a ps4, but I’ve played about 5 games on the thing…

That dude wasn’t much of a hype man, but it’s nice to know there’s a framework in place to complete the Remake. Always thought it would fizzle out but now that they’ve come this far with the goal of making a trilogy locked in it might actually happen.

Rebirth will be the sequel to Remake and the second in the remake trilogy. Very excited.

Suspect the final chapter will arrive in time for the 30th anniversary, and maybe come to xbox in 2035, for the 40th…. By which time it will need remaking again 😝

from that showing, I am looking forward to playing crisis core on my OLED switch, and the mobile ever crisis thing on my hacked switch via Android emulation.

Anyone hoping this was going to be cheaper on Steam, prepare to be disappointed.

On the bright side, it's also on Greenmangaming (for the same price), so on a wing and a prayer it's possible to see a price cut in the next few months as resellers do their part.

EDIT - Humble Store has the game as well, so you can use the Humble Choice discount if you have it available.

I've woken up really excited for this. Remake was 100% my jam and to know they've actually got a three game plan rather than just hurtling forward flogging the dead horse for thirty years is cool! I'm full in for Nomura bollocks going forward too, I reckon game 2 is basically going to be all of the destiny nonsense from the end of Remake spread over half an open world of places we recognise. It'll be fun, basically!
