Game Boy & GB Advance Appreciation Thread

Really happy with it. Not a big colour screen like the laminated ones you see, it's the same size as the original I think. Really bright, tapping the top changes brightness.

Chuffed.

Now to see how it's fitted and possibly get another case for it.

I have 540 and no easy way to make the extra 60 short of playing some godawful mobile game 😭

I had 540 too, and had to re-download Super Mario Run and do a few toad rallies to get to 600

My posters arrived yesterday! They’re glorious, and bloody massive. The £19 Ribba frames from Ikea are an exact fit so I’ll be getting a few of those.

I strikes me that I have a GBA micro languishing in a drawer, and that is a crime.

All my carts have flat batteries however, so I think I should get a flash cart.

Any recommendations please?

From a search, Everdrive seems expensive but best, then maybe everdrive?

They almost got me, but I just barely managed to beat this level.

Oh! I've never played this but it's Out to Lunch or something isn't it? I saw it had been added to the Switch service but got distracted by the GBA games. I do love a single-screen puzzle arcade game and I'd no idea this was one to be honest.

I just discovered Kwirk recently and it's great but after about half a dozen levels I got terrified of how hard they could potentially get and became too intimidated to boot it again

I'm on the GBC not the GBA, but I couldn't justify the cost of an Everdrive. Once you've added shipping and VAT it is over £50. I managed to find an EZ Flash Jr on ebay for £30, which isn't bad at all considering the knock off cheap chinese flash carts sit at about £25 shipped.

Have you played Catrap/Pitman? Not very arcade like but a my favourite single screen puzzle game on the GB.

Oh yes! One I picked up a while ago on the 3DS eShop (RIP) when someone on here recommended it. Lovely stuff.

Well could I recommend Millie & Molly on quite a few formats, my tribute to that game? ;)

Also Mole Mania to go back to GB games.

Not playing it on gameboy (3DS VC) but Metroid II  is really good. It’s a shame it took 17 years for it to click with me. I never used to like it but now I can understand and appreciate just how impressive it was for something running on the original gameboy.

Is it linear? Absolutely but there’s still a sizeable world there. If there had been another shot at a metroid game on the Colour it probably would have been a perfect bridge between II and Super design wise. It’s already a good bridge between Nes and Super because the hardware limitations forced the developers to show restraint on the level design, something that NES Metroid was in serious need of.

The game has definitely gone up as one of my favourite gameboy titles almost overnight.

Just saw this and yes - yes you could! I see it’s on Switch which is ideal for me too.

Mole Mania is a great shout too. I’ve only seen it played (and know who was behind it) but have never got round to it properly.

Cheers. Might be worth hanging about for a Switch M&M sale, it often goes down to £2.

  • 1 month later...

Ive been looking out for various Gameboys for a while and today my other half found this beauty in a box of stuff we moved house with a year ago but hadn’t been through…

I hadn’t see this colour in the flesh before so was very excited, a quick prayer to the battery gods and…

Bugger, a wide over to get the worst of the crust off and its dead as a dodo so out comes the tr-wing…

The board looks ok, the contacts not so much but I thought it would be worth a white wine vinegar clean before fully taking it out and checking - the other battery connector was far worse so into an egg cup full of vinegar and fizz fizz fizz!

A while later and some ipa cleanup and it wasnt looking half bad, worth a go I thought…

Huzzah! It powers on and plays fine, all controls and sound working etc - will clean it up fully and call it my first successful repair.
