Game Boy & GB Advance Appreciation Thread

Are there any drop in mods for better screens on the OG / Pocket / Colour? I know there is for the Advance.

It's something I'd like to do, but I don't have any soldering gear. So by the time I've bought a system, screen kit, soldering kit I may aswell just buy a pre-modded system.

You don’t need any soldering gear for the DMG mods, GBC and GBA soldering is optional.

It’s true that by the time you buy a scruffy game boy on eBay for £40 and a new case and screen from AliExpress for £45-50 and wait for it to arrive you might as well look out for a pre-modded game boy on ebay

Only worth it if you can find very cheap game boys from car boots, I found 2 last summer

They never show up at my local boot unfortunately. It's terrible for gaming and has been for years ever since two traders started going weekly and picking th eplace clean before it opens to the public.

I modded my Gameboy color with an ips screen. No solder required. The kit came with a replacement shell. I can't remember where I bought the kit from!

Been getting back into GBA again via playing on my recently-acquired Retroid Pocket 2+

There are so many games I'd like to play again and so many that I missed back in the day. But rather than start something completely new, I decided to have a fresh play-through on the mighty Pokemon FireRed version! Been years since I played it last and I must say that it's good to be back. Trying to play with a bit different team this time rather than the same old 'mon that I always used, as I did when I revisited the OG Red Version for GB last year.

I did get rid of all of my physical GBA stuff years back, but I kept these three as they are all mint-in-box and purchased on their respective launch days with the receipts still inside. Don't even have any original GBA hardware to play them anymore other than a stock OG model and would rather not use the carts again anyway. I kept these for nostalgia (since I have owned them from new) and also because it would be too expensive to ever buy them back in the same condition.

Isn’t that on a game by game basis with some games not looking as they should!?

You're probably right but I'm just playing all the games I remembered when I was young. I'm just blown away by it so far, it sounds stupid but I'm having much more fun playing it than my other more powerful handhelds. Nostalgia is one hell of a drug.

Very jealous of you all. Would love to mod my pocket, but I haven't soldered since I was a kid and don't have a kit. So

1: I don't trust myself not to fuck it up

2: It would be a total waste buying a soldering iron since I'd never use it again.

Do it! I never soldered until about a month ago and today I finished my biverted/backlit build to go along with my IPS build.kse25t.thumb.jpg.d88af1a0ae26d764877144b1b029bc80.jpgPlus, the amount of times I've got rid of random broken electronic stuff and now I have the confidence (and iron) to at least try and fix things.

There are non solder screen kits, I did one myself and it was fun and pretty easy.

Yep! Just make sure to get one with a pre-soldered speaker as some kits don't.

no point, as I said above it would be a waste as on don’t have any other use for the solder kit.

Which ones? I’ve only found one and the screen is smaller than the default unit.

So it looks like I made a cheeky offer on an IPS colour on ebay. Didn't mean to... Also it was disgusting. Like 50% the seller was asking for.

He accepted it..

So if it works I guess I'll be putting the pocket up for sale!

That’s no so bad. Swap in some black buttons from retrosix and you’ve got a lovely stealth game boy.

easy enough too if you want to swap the glass lens.

Yeah gonna see what it's like when it arrives. I fancy a frosted white transparent case with orange buttons.
