Are there any original GB games that are actually worth playing today? Not just because you loved it in 1991 or whatever.

Some more here:

Either you've got an awful lot of these devices, then, or something's stopping you!

Nah. I don’t know what it is. Maybe I’m happy enough with my GBA and NGPC. The MiSTer handles everything else. The Analogue Pocket screen would be better suited for GB/GBC stuff, but there’s no way I’m spending that much or waiting that long just for a better way to play GB games.

I just got a Miyoo Mini for my son for his birthday next month.

I did a blind playthrough of Gargoyle's Quest in 2020 and thought it was pretty decent. It's a spin-off from the Ghosts 'n' Goblins games but it plays a little like Zelda 2 - a top-down overworld with side-scrolling dungeon crawls and random encounters, and also some ability upgrading that enables you to backtrack and reach previously inaccessible areas. It only takes a few hours to complete but it's a nice tight experience and I enjoyed the satisfaction of unlocking (for example) a longer flying distance and finally being able to get to a platform that taunted me ages ago.

Dr. Mario still holds up, but you've probably played that a bunch of times.

Thanks for that. Just followed the instructions and it looks great.

I have started selling some of my GB set (including Rolans Curse 2 and Ninja Taro, mentioned couple posts above) and this has made me feel much better about letting them go.

Just lately I've been playing Super Mario Bros Deluxe on GBC. For my money it's still the best way to play the original Super Mario Bros as you get a good rendition of the original game, plus as you complete each stage it opens it up in Challenge Mode where you have various things to do including chasing a score target and finding the red coins on each stage. It's pretty tough though as you basically have to do each stage in a single life.

I've never completed Super Mario Bros so I'm going to see if that's doable, what with me being a bit cack-handed and lacking in patience, but at least you can save on game over and start from the next stage.

Looks nice on the 351P as well.

I was a big fan of Adventure Island back in the day. No idea if it still holds up.

Surely Wario Blast is better than Bomberman simply by having Wario in it?

I find Adventure Island at its best when you get to ride animals around, as opposed to the original version where you basically just run to the right. As for Bomberman, I find the later games to be more favorable since they tended to experiment more, not just GB, but also Quest, which takes on a more action-adventure styled approach.

Catrap is a genuinely good one that missed me back in the day. A platform puzzler with a rewind mechanic, on an 8-bit handheld!

I hear that The Frog For Whom The Bell Tolls is also worth playing, although you’ll need a system capable of running fan translations. It’s part of the reason why Link’s Awakening arrived so fully formed - the engine and a lot of the gameplay concepts originated here.

Wario Blast is good, simply because you could (and can still!) play it multiplayer with a Super Game Boy, whereby it becomes a sort-of Super Bomberman Lite.

Great shout by the way! Really enjoying this.

Simple multi-level puzzle game with clear rules and really good puzzle design.

I released a ‘tribute’ to Catrap on Commodore 64, Switch and iOS called Millie & Molly if you’re after some more. Same game, totally new levels
