She hasn't half narrated a lot of rubbish books, but I've a lot of time for Dina Pearlman. And N.K. Jemisin's books have been graced by good readers - Robin Miles and Sarah Zimmerman were both fabulous, though I've not heard them outside of The Broken Earth and Dreamblood novels, respectively.

Here's a tip for some cheap audiobooks.

Start a Kindle Unlimited trial if you haven't already:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/kindle-dbs/promoLanding?promoCode=f0fbe00b-a291-45cd-aae5-3f17410e4732&_encoding=UTF8&tag=thjomo-21&linkCode=ur2&linkId=ed307f364792b8f13bdc92e685e967b9&camp=1634&creative=6738

Add books you're interested in, and if Audible Narration is available, this can usually be added at a much reduced price.

Examples:

Slaughter House-Five - £2.99

We Are Legion (We Are Bob) - £3.49

Really enjoying Sapiens.

It seems to have a knack of making really difficult subjects seem trivially easy to understand.

There's loads of interesting trivia too, like I didn't know why Wall Street is called that (because it was the site of the wall built in New Amsterdam to keep the British and Indians out)

Unfortunately, that version has a really horrible background noise to it. It's a really bad quality recording, the only one I've come across on Audible.

Gah, shame. I have a different version already on my phone - just need to find 50h to devote to it.

I keep forgetting to mention this, but is anyone into the Pilgrim stories by Sebastien Baczkiewicz? The story of a guy on a pilgrimage to Canterbury in the twelfth century who gets cursed to walk the Earth forever by the King of the Faeries, and ends up in modern times having adventures and righting wrongs, just like Caine in Kung Fu.

They are amazing, and Audible have these superbly produced BBC full cast recordings of them, with Paul Hilton as Pilgrim.

I am addicted, you may we’ll be too:

That version of Monte Cristo had bad interference for me, you might wanna return that. Give it a listen and see if it's the same for you.

And finished! 52 bloody hours (i got my epic badge :P) Good though and no audio problems.

We are Legion (We Are Bob) is actually pretty bloody good. I dunno why I bought it, maybe just liked the sound of it when it was in the sale, but I've now gotten parts 2 and 3 as well (if someone recommended it on here I do apologise, but thank you sincerely!). Basic premise is that Bob is a software guy who lucks out and sells his company for megabucks to a bigger firm - he's just celebrating this when he gets knocked down and killed. The story starts however, when he is purchasing cyrogenic freezing for his head.

Going further into the premise, getting a bit more spoilery:

Spoiler

When he is awoken over a hundred years have passed and he has been loaded into a computer - the US has had a massive civil war and split in two, and he's part of the "Faith" faction, who've got a job for him.

The Faith faction want him to become a Von Neumann machine and start colonising other planets in the name of faith. Needless to say this bit does't really happen, but he is given all the capabilities of making more copies of himself - which he does (and then they do). Each new Bob that's created is very slightly different to the ones that came before and has different goals/character traits etc - each chapter is told from one of the Bob's point of view and (because of the time taken to cross systems) is told at different parts of the overall timeline - which keeps you on your toes.

it's badged as an Audible Original and available only on.

I've really enjoyed it - got about half of book three to go. It's geeky - Bob was a software engineer who liked sci-fi after all - and digs into a load of different things, capabilities and just things he gets up to. Well worth a listen to the first one for sure, if you don't get on with that then I suggest you give the others a miss because it is just one big story really.

His voice is annoying definitely, but he's a good writer and his podcast efforts so far have been interesting.

I signed up anyway - found a cheap returning user deal and got Limmy's book with my credit.

2 episodes into the Ronson podcast - decent so far. First episode is all setup of what happened and the people involved in August/Mercedes' life. Second episode starts to get going with some background industry nastiness, family interviews, conflicting stories and so on.

I'm half way through that Bill Bryson book, it's mind bending!

The kind of book which makes everything else in the world seem utterly trivial. It also makes me feel incredibly stupid. Other than that it's great!

Infinite Jest is now available as a single audiobook, would recommend! @Miner Willy

Doesn't seem to have endnotes but I'd read them from the book, anyway, it's easier that way. Just catch up with them when you get a minute.

Audible has the endnotes:

Thanks. I already have the book so I assume endnotes in there. But I'll probably listen to it on audiobook... Though it's going to take me a while to get through The Stand.

Edit: fifty-six fucking hours!
