Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

I had a quick go on this after getting my pro + 4k setup and thought it had one of the best implentations of 4K and HDR yet. Admittedley it was in the Utulek complex so very dark with awesome neons, can't comment on the daytime but surely it can't be as bad as you say?

I started playing this... bought it for almost full price when it came out, then it sat on the pile of shame until shops started selling it for a tenner... that's when I get round to it!

I'm on regular PS4 and I think the graphics look good, but a little odd... there's some kind of 'sharpening' effect on all the edges which isn't just regular aliasing. It kind of looks bad.

I'm having great fun sneaking around Prague and getting into all the buildings through vents and stuff. I broke into all the apartments in the fancy apartment block and one of them seemed to be owned by a pair of gay dads... then I noticed that it was my boss! who I hadn't even gone to meet yet. I broke into the back room of the arms dealer in my apartment complex... stole combat rifles... then sold them to him. Serves him right for being so rude.

The loading times are quite shocking, especially because you can 'fail' at stealth so easily and wish to reload. I haven't really got cracking with the story missions yet, it's all sidequests and Prague-exploring so far.

I finally finished this last night after a massive break at the GARM point. I absolutely loved the last level though it seems as though I fucked it right up:

Spoiler

I was playing it with the intention of living with my actions, but I did retry the 'take out all the guards unnoticed' optional objective a few times just because it was so damn fun. Eventually though I rolled with it when the shit hit the fan. It's such a good setup, and results in a brilliant firefight as all hell breaks loose and you're trying to find and stop the remaining bad guys before they gun down too many civilians. I can't remember a game that's recreated the panic of a terrorist attack in progress so well.

I also loved the last section, which I ended up blasted my way thorough, silencers off, frag grenades everywhere. So satisfying letting rip with my fully-upgraded handgun finally. Brilliant stuff.

Anyway, my boss died, the delegates died, Alison Stanek died. I'm afraid I lost the story thread so I'm not even sure who the people I was trying to save were, except Nathanial Brown. I'm also not sure how I saved the innocents in the tower block - presumably by going to see the big bad in time?

Has anyone tried the perma-death difficulty? Is it the hardest mode plus permadeath? I'm tempted to give it go just to see how far I get, though I'd rather do it NG+ when I'd presumably get to keep my augs.

Such a shame the follow-up has been canned. I'd love to have seen what happened next. Presumably it would taken things right up to the events of the original game.

I think "lackluster" was the general feeling.

One felt like it could have been in main game, not sure about other.

The "big" one was ok - but was set before the game answering questions few asked and having little impact

I don't think any of the DLC has been that great. The Missing Link in Human Revolution when it was included as part of the main story in the Director's Cut killed the pacing of the game for me.

Story-wise all the DLC has been disappointing, quite obviously ripped from the main game to line SE's pockets a little more. Playground-stealth-wise though they are all excellent, giving you loads of varied possibilities for tackling the missions and some really interesting, complex locations to explore. More MGSV than MGS3 then, but you'll get your money's worth.

I just had a couple of goes on 'I never asked for this' permadeath mode. First time I jumped into some poisonous air in Dubai, safe in the knowledge that my rebreather would protect me. Seems it only lasts a limited time and I choked to death whilst trying scrabble out of the corridor of doom.

Second time I beat the first mission and got settled into the story proper. Managed to circumvent the corrupt checkpoint to get to the bookstore but got immediately spotted clattering around on the rooftop and ended up pinned at the end of an alley as Dvali henchmen moved in. I took a fair few out before I was totally out of all items and got cut down making a run for it.

Somehow I can't see myself making it to the end.

It's a bit of a shame 'permadeath' is so punishing, as I'd like to replay the game with a hardcore twist. Just not that hardcore! I was thinking you could still apply the single-save approach (so you have to live with your actions and can't reload) but perhaps you could revive yourself as long as you had a hypostim. That would make hypostim's really rewarding to find!

What are your thoughts on the franchise now that Square Enix is done with it? I hope for the return of Warren Spector after System Shock 3.

SE are holding onto the rights aren't they? So it's dead unless they decide to revive it at some point in the future.

Agreed. I'm halfway through MD now and really enjoying it. Drags you in you in wonderfully.

I seem to be playing mostly semi-lethal and ghost like in places but then a couple of times  (underground casino and on way out of Golem) I've completely lost it, snapped and gone on big murdering sprees. Oops.

Have amassed about 12k in cash so far, what did people spend it all on?

The lack of interest for this around its launch was downright criminal. It's a great game though I wish the story was better fleshed out. Hope they get to take a crack at rounding out Jensen's story at some point.

To me it finished like it did because they were hoping if successful they would release a follow up in 2 years using the same engine.

Alas it will never be.

I went for Mankind Divided as it (sounds like) the gameplay is a bit more refined/has moved on since HR, plus shiniest and I like the sound of the setting. I'm more interested in playing through the game than getting wrapped up in the story (first proper experience with Deus Ex) but I will read up & watch some YouTube recaps on the story up to this point :)

Perhaps I got it all wrong, but I seem to have read somewhere that Square Enix were ridding themselves of both Hitman and Deus Ex.

I liked the gameplay, but I played it relatively recently and I don't remember anything of the main plot.  Some of the side quests were great though.

There's a good 10 minute recap at the start of the game that'll tell you all you need to know.

To be honest the gameplay hasn't moved on much between HR and MD. It's not the  most obvious generational leap by any means but of course you're right, MD is a little more refined.

I recommend the 'Breach' method as it reserves L1 for an aug slot whilst also keeping close to standard FPS controls. Also, play on Hard.

So finally polished this off last night and I thoroughly enjoyed it I have to say. Though full disclosure, I’ve loved every Deus Ex since the utterly brilliant original, well all except Invisible War maybe but let’s not go there again.

It is clunky as fuck in places (hohoho at the cut scenes as previously discussed) and the opening is terrible but there’s just something about the universe and Jensen that I love. I did every single side mission as felt compelled to find out the full story and it was great. Some of the level design is fantastic; they must have had a lot of fun making Prague. The ending was a bit rubbish (also previously discussed) after all that, I was busy hacking another console when it just finished.

That said, I don’t think I’ve played a game which has crashed (pc) so much in years, literally a couple of times minimum every time I played but still carried on as wanted to see the end. Many other games would have been binned for such shoddiness. Nixxes usually do excellent ports so maybe my machine but it doesn’t have issues with anything else.

I’m gutted it didn’t sell well and got a bit shafted by SE as we all really need to see a final chapter to all this for Adam and the Illuminati. I don’t know why but I feel like IO Interactive might be a good fit to give it a go next but who knows.

What’s the dlc like, have Desperate Measures but not the others, worth a play or not that great? Think I’ve had my fill for the moment and just in time for Destiny 2 beta but may come back.

Just chiming in to echo your thoughts, really. For all the grimdark mems around the character I really enjoy spending time with Jensen. Such a shame that the series - or at least, this sequel - never really got any traction. (same goes for Dishonoured, for that matter).

Funny you mention Dishonored as I loved the original and only got round to playing the sequel a couple of months back after having it since Chrimbo. I really didn't get on with it for some reason. It sort of bored me for want of a better word and I ended up rushing through to the end just so it could be over. Still an amazingly realised world but I've really had my fill of it.

Now eyeing up Prey but think maybe a better plan to play something else before jumping back in to another similar style game.
