They are taking the piss with that. Fast travel is not and nor ever should be a paywall feature.

 

Locking weapon types behind them in hyrule warriors was treading the line.

Nice looking Amiibo but locking that functionality behind it is terrible.

 

Where have Nintendo said you can only fast travel with the Amiibo? There's every possibility it'll also be a menu option, just tapping the bird on your pad is a "short cut".

Given that you have to open the menu to select amiibo reading first, I’m not sure how this extra strep would qualify as a short cut.

Probably more that scanning Amiibo allows for earlier acces to the feature rather then unlocking it later in the game. Nintendo have done something like this before with games like Kirby: Planet Robobot, Star Fox Zero and the last Zelda remaster.
