Nintendo has the option to release Amiibo "in card form" in place of any discontinued figures, Shigeru Miyamoto has said.

The cards would feature the same functionality as the figures and allow developers to take advantage of discontinued Amiibo characters in future games.

"We'll continue to make future games that will have functionality with the "amiibo" characters as an additional present for people who bought them," Miyamoto told ABC. "Beyond that, we're looking at how we can use the "amiibo" functionality in the future, including cards and whatnot."

"We're not making promises for certain figures," he added when asked whether Nintendo would continue including support for discontinued Amiibo in future games, "but the way 'amiibo' is designed is that certain games can have 'amiibo' specifically for that game. Other games can take advantage of past 'amiibo' that developers want to make their game compatible with.

"In the future, we have the option, if certain 'amiibo' figures are no longer available in stores, to release an 'amiibo' in card form with the same functionality."

It was reported earlier this month that Marth, Villager and Wii Fit Trainer Amiibos had been discontinued, prompting fans to rush out and buy them before they sold out. They since appear to have been restocked at certain retailers, however, prompting confusion over whether they had actually been discontinued.

A second wave of Amiibo, which includes Zelda, Diddy Kong, Captain Falcon and Luigi, go on sale today.

Hope Tesco get wave 2 in soon before the club card boost runs out. Effectively means you're only paying £5 each for them.

Also, does anyone know how many 'waves' a year there are going to be? I'd like to collect but if there's going to be a lot, it's going to be a little expensive.

I only really want the Kirby one, I just wish it came with interchangeable hats.

And now I know exactly what I'll be asking Jo to make for me next time she's in a crafty mood! Yoshi is going to look adorable wearing the hats of his vanquished enemies.

Not as yet. The waves are due to there being so many Smash Bros characters. They'll all get one amiibo at least. It's possible Nintendo could release variants of some amiibos too.

Smash Bros amiibos Wave 1 was 12 figures. Wave 2 is 6 figures, Wave 3 is 8 figures & Wave 4 is 3 figures. That's 29 already with another 21 to go.

Wave 4 sounds like more of a splash.

I quite like that idea of having Amiibo cards instead of figures. I've been hesitant to get involved as I don't have the room for lots of plastic figurines (the same reason I don't play Disney Infinity despite wanting to.) But having a Amiibo card wallet or case sounds like a much better idea, & then I won't have to miss out on all the extra stuff they unlock.
