The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3DS

Having an unusual time with this. Having waited years to play it (and ten months since buying it for various reasons!) I can’t decide if I’m enjoying myself or not.
Basically I’ve done two dungeons and they’ve been really solid, everything I like about Zelda games. The rest of it, with the reliance on sidequests and the three-day cycle I think is a fantastic idea and absolutely no fun at all.

That's exactly how I felt about the game. Got about halfway through and gave up.

Many of the sidequests you mostly have to follow a guide, or have played the game before, to stand a chance with. You can't just explore and find places, people and events by yourself at your own pace like you can in other Zelda games, and if you do, you're bound to mess things up.

The 3DS remake of Ocarina of Time remains near the top of my favourite games ever list, but MM, I didn't enjoy much of it, and what I did made it very clear why the three-day cycle idea has never been repeated. I'd go as far as to say that I wish they'd removed the three-day cycle for the remake and made the games structure based on the standard LoZ template. Would have found it far more fun that way.

Your suggestion here indicates to me that you never really understood the way the game worked and how you were supposed to manipulate time to complete anything.

Oh wow, the "you suck at it" response so belovered by irate fanboys in an attempt to shut down all critical discussion.

I understand perfectly well how the mechanism works. I just don't think it works in practice, and isn't as conductive to the gameplay and sense of adventure as the light/dark world in ALttP, present and future (past and present?) duality in OoT, or Lorule in ALBW. I kind of liken MM to one of those games from the Spectrum era that would have a really unique concert behind it, one you'd never seen before or since, which while imaginative and new basically detracts more from the overall game experience than adds to it. Which is a shame, as MM has a lot of extremely good things going for it, e.g. the characterisation, world-building, dungeon design, most of it really.

I'm neither irate, nor a fanboy (the dungeons are the one weak element in this), but you're just flat out wrong about needing a guide. It's as simple as that.

Also you've forgotten that the Sheikah Stones exist, again. We discussed it at the time. But even without using those there's nothing especially obtuse or obscure in the game, it's all there in the game for the player to work out, without a guide. You can't say the three day cycle "doesn't work in practice" when it patently does. It worked for me, it worked for thousands of other people. It's brilliant, is what it is. A wonderful timey wimey puzzle to be solved.

If it had followed the same standard LoZ template as you suggest we would have been robbed of the most unique game in the series. And some would argue, the best. So you're going to get shouted down on this one I'm afraid, and deservedly so.

I've just gotten around to playing this, and have hit a weird problem. Before Woodfall temple I found the green great fairy fountain. I didn't get all the stray fairies on my first time through, so I decided I'd go back and get them after resetting everything with the song of time. I just left the dungeon after finding them all to bring them to the great fairy and the cave/entrance thingy is gone. What/why? Is this a thing?

Why have they made so many artistic changes? I know it's not SO MUCH of a big deal, but Majora's Mask is my favourite game of all time; the mask seller's area is supposed to be dark, dingy and sinister. They've completely changed the moon:

Now it looks like a caricature villain, whereas before there was an unsettling stoicism about it. And, judging by that screen, the sky when the time is at and end is now a dark red rather than the pale blue/orange of the original.

They may well add CGI Stormtroopers.

Never forget. What a shit redesign.

This was released in the "Nintendo Selects" budget line recently, but seemingly only in the US.

Are Nintendo doing any more "Selects" for UK 3DS games or is that avenue now closed?

Would be nice if they did, been wanting to grab this but can't justify the cost. Even if it just becomes an e-shop select release it would be nice.

Mad bump. I finished Cadence of Hyrule over the weekend which made me think about giving this another go, and I can see exactly what I thought of it originally just by scrolling up the page!

Usually going back after such a hiatus would be pure folly but I reckon the three-day cycle and the notes the 3DS version takes to help you out with the sidequests might make this possible.
