Disney Buy 20th Century Fox! Was: Marvel announces Phase 3 slate

I think Deadpool is the only Fox character that could legitimately make the move over to the MCU. He'd be able to pass comment about the deal, make fun of his new boss being a mouse etc. The inconsistencies in previous films with the current MCU can be explained away plainly that way.

The rest of the X-Men are going to have to be rebooted though. Too much inconsistency and baggage from previous films.

The X-Men continuity is a mess, the last movie was crap, but most of all those versions of the characters don't fit in with the MCU at all. Deadpool does, because - unlike the movie X-Men - he sticks really close to the comic book original. If Marvel does their own version of the X-Men, they will be very different to the Fox versions - they will have proper costumes and everything. But Deadpool would probably turn out very similar to what Reynolds is doing with the character at the moment.

Jackman’s Wolverine is done. Reynold’s Deadpool is great but I’d be surprised if they kept him on as part of the MCU, same with any of the other actors currently doing X-Men. That series had a great run, the new ones were ok, but the young cast seem to have been an afterthought. Sansa Stark as Jean Grey anyone?

No, I think they’ll re-cast the lot and start a fully MCU integrated mutant line-up.

More importantly, when’s the remastered, cleaned up Star Wars OT coming out? :omg:

Can't wait for the Galactus reveal.

wpid-giorgio-comolo-galactus-silver-surf

Silver Surfer returning saying he's found a planet to consume showing him a hologram of earth. Perfect intro for the big man.

Also, cast someone Wolverine sized not a 6'5 juggernaut man - he's supposed to be like a ninja.

Shit, this means we might see Juggernaut in CG form too! Hulk vs Juggernaut! Hulk vs Thing! exciting times.

Seeing as my Ultimate Ending is now actually possible, I'd like to repost it here for your (but mostly my) enjoyment.

There's been rumours that they've silently re-acquired the rights to Fantastic Four. I hope they manage to stay silent on that until they manage to add my idea on to the end of Avengers 4.

So here's how I'd ideally have phase 3 end:

The Avengers + everyone else (including all TV show characters) have gotten together and over the course of two impossibly epic Avengers films have finally defeated Thanos.

There's a post-credit scene of them all taking stock and realising how lucky they've been in squeaking a victory over Thanos, and how they couldn't possibly handle a threat of that magnitude again.

Then there's a sudden blast as something whooshes in out of nowhere.

For about half a second, there's a shot of them all seeing the Silver Surfer has arrived. Just enough time for the audience to clock who it is before the screen goes black.

Basically, yeah, Galactus. That's where they go after Thanos.

I’m interested what happens to the current X-Men films. New Mutants, Deadpool 2 and even Dark Phoenix must surely be far enough along that they’ll just let them come out. New Mutants will probably be finished by now, and Deadpool must be close. They both look to be pretty self contained too, so not much chance of them confusing anyone.

Dark Phoenix though, even with all the work that will already have been done, must be something they’re looking at quite closely. If they decide to keep the young X-Men cast and can sign Fassbender, Macavoy and Lawrence on for more then maybe you retool the ending? Have some sort of linking event, Phoenix or Scarlet Witch fucking with reality and merging worlds. If you’re rebooting, maybe you switch the ending up to be more of a finale for those versions of the characters.

There must be a temptation to just cancel it, avoid confusion and start fresh with your own versions. Jackman has a great goodbye, DOFP served as a decent enough farewell to the rest of the old cast, and I can’t see that there’s many people who care about the new ones.

They need to start from fresh for so many reasons, and hopefully Disney won't let the paedo director of the previous films anywhere near these characters ever again.

Everyone worried that Disney will tone down some films, surely Disney have already released many mature films if not under their name then under one of their other brands?

Yeah. If nothing else I think Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown and Kill Bill were all from the period that Disney owned Miramax.

Man, I forgot about that.

Yeah, they really really do need to start a fresh after all that. Singer should be fired into the sun.

Yea Disney releases rated R films all the time under different production companies they own.

For instance, back when Disney owned Miramax films, they released content like Kill Bill and Clerks.  And the Scream trilogy was released by Dimension Films, which was owned by Disney at the time. They still own Touchstone Pictures, I believe, which also released rated R content.

Considering the popularity of Deadpool, I'd say they're gonna keep him Rated-R.  He might end up remaining separate though and not entering the MCU, since he's technically in a weird alt-version of the X-Men universe.  Unless they decide to link the two universes together, like they do in comics sometimes, by using some sort of cosmic force or perhaps an extremely powerful mutant that can universe jump.

Goes without saying that if he ever joins the Avengers, they'll have to tame him a bit outside of his solo films.

The Deadpool comics don't really have any swearing or even that much graphic violence, and when they have done, the comics have suffered and mostly been pretty unreadable.

The comics that have 'for mature readers only' are usually the ones to avoid.

Well that isn't the issue.  The issue is that they've already had a successful rated-R Deadpool and it would be pretty lame to suddenly force its sequels into PG-13 territory.  Of course, there would be some fourth wall joke about Disney and we'd all have a laugh.  But if Deadpool can't drop an f-bomb as he pleases, what kind of movie would that be?!

Quote

On Dec. 14, the day The Walt Disney Co. unveiled its industry-altering $52.4 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox assets, Peter Rice, president of Fox and CEO of Fox Networks Group, shared a stage with Fox TV Group co-chiefs Gary Newman and Dana Walden and FX Networks CEO John Landgraf. According to staff present, the leaders did their best to rally the troops. What they couldn’t do is proclaim their own job security.

That uncertainty is being felt in commissaries and executive suites throughout the Murdoch empire, most of which over the next 12 to 18 months will be integrated into a Disney content powerhouse under CEO Bob Iger. Analysts predict about $2 billion in “cost savings” from the merger, and “we believe Disney will need to cut well over 5,000 jobs, and the number could easily swell toward 10,000 given the high degree of overlap between the two companies around the world,” wrote analyst and Disney critic Rich Greenfield.

As for who the quoted Analyst And Disney Critic Rich Greenfield is: this is an earlier Hollywood reporter article about him.

Given the direction the CEO of Disney decided to take the film division after a poor few years financially, it's not exactly unwarranted to be concerned what they plan to do with Fox. Disney currently only make 2 types of film product, the AAA merchandisable type and the odd low budget low key effort and nothing else, despite owning multiple studio brands. Fox in comparison is still fairly odd school in their release slate, to gain any value from the deal, something is going to change at Fox to make it worth Disney's while buying them.

The Fox deal dwarfs the amount Iger paid for his 3 golden gooses, probably won't be as lucrative as he didn't pick Fox up for relatively fuck all.

Bob Mortimer says Ben Wheatley has been offered a Marvel movie. Both of them were supposed to be doing a movie about Michael Jackson's glove. I had heard of that before so I don't think he's just making stuff up. But he said that's been delayed after Wheatley was offered a big Marvel film.
