I thought judging whether they should be fired or not based on their idea, not what they'd done or not done during the task was complete bollocks. For one, what's the bloody point of even letting people in the competition when Alan would have absolutely no desire to go into business with them anyway? What a total bloody waste of time for them in the first place.

That's kind of like moaning Dr Who isn't a real Doctor.

The Apprentice is an entertainment that in large part is cast with that function in mind.

The most likely truth about Mark staying is much more likely down to wanting him at the interview stage in preference to someone like Sanjay rather than anything to do with his business plan.

But that's okay, and probably a good move cos it is pretty entertaining :D

The whole apprentice concept is like Big Brother meets Dragon's Den, whilst sucking up to Siralun as if he is much more impressive in the world of business than he actually is. They get a load of ego-centric "big characters" to follow week by week to get people talking about the show, and then try to get rid of the neutral/drippy ones whilst leaving in the controversial ones as long as possible, and then ending with the one that is the least idiotic. The idea of investing in their business idea is probably less annoying than employing them for a year, but doesn't match with the tasks at all, except to see if they have any common sense or social skills. But it was weird to see the switch from judging them on the task to judging the business plan in this episode, which suggests that either they really wanted to keep Mark (and I think he is one of the better ones) or there was a story behind the scenes they didn't show (such as Mark being ill, or Katie being much more clueless than she looked on screen.

In terms of prize, the investment is pretty pathetic - £250k for a 50% share of a business is rubbish. A good business idea can get much larger investment for smaller equity from investment capitalists, and apart from the publicity (arguably given by the BBC) Siralun isn't adding much to the table to justify his share.

He adds an instant huge network of contacts and doors that will open.

Well excited about the interviews, always my favourite, especially seeing Ricky.

come on, the whole point of the tasks is to be 'judged' on them in some way. if that's not the point, they might as well just put their ideas in front of Alan, let him go, 'shit, shit, good, shit, shit, shit, OK, shit, shit, shit, shit' and jump straight to the interview round.

The show is geared and edited towards entertainment, not create awesome business.

If the show was in any way geared up to the actual end goal they'd have each person developing their business idea each week with the one screwing up worst getting eliminated. Although going on the level of certain the show attracts as contestants I'd imagine you could get some good entertainment out of that!

that was exactly the format of a Peter Jones (Dragons Den) show on ITV that they setup to rival the apprentice, it only got 1 series.

he'd review their progress each week and set them a target to achieve in the next show.

iirc it was fairly boring.

Exactly - people don't want to watch 'real' business happening, they want to see these exaggerated scenarios with all manner of artificial restrictions in place to create drama and make people - many of whom run their own businesses - look silly.

It was pretty obvious from the interviews who was going through.

The Roisin one was interesting, but only in the watching someone who normally comes across as sensible and switched on having a blind spot the size of Africa about how difficult and expensive it would be to market and gain even the slightest bit of traction with her concept!

Really thought it was gona be battle of the salesmen, daniel and mark. Claude was great as ever, didnt care for the snotty new woman she didnt add very much. Why does sugar want to make tights, what a pointless business plan, you can buy allsorts of tights already. Should have been daniel. Claude still loving ricky though, excellent.

Best quotes:

"It's a bloody disgrace! You're taking the piss!

......

That's not the way out."

"I've done some research... which I've found quite pleasant"

(Claude on Bianca's hosiery plan)

Daniel: Good salesmen are ten a penny

Mark: Says No 6

Solomon is such an idiot. He goes through 11 weeks only to fail because he didn't make a business plan? What a waste.

And just think - Daniel beat Roisin.

Well moreso it just highlights what a monumental waste of time the process is for most of the contestants. I actually feel a bit sorry for them.

Solomon would have submitted that business plan at the application process. He should have been screened out based on the fact that it was completely inadequate and he would never stand a chance of being picked based on it. But they put him in and he spends weeks of his life participating in a process he never had a chance of winning.

It leaves a bit of a nasty taste in my mouth, this process. However annoying or naive the contestants are, they're still real people who in many cases are giving up well paid jobs to participate in this and some of them will just literally waste months of their lives on a hiding to nothing.

The only way this format would work for me is if Sugar screened all the business plans beforehand and would, in theory, be happy backing them all if they got through to the final stages. At least weed out the complete non-starters.
