DC Comics and TNT are teaming for Titans, a new series which will see fan favourite character Dick Grayson (a.k.a. Nightwing) taking the lead of the superhero team know as the Teen Titans!

Deadline reports that DC Entertainment will continue to expand their small screen universe with the addition of Titans, a new cable series coming to TNT. As of right now, it's apparently awaiting the green light while the network makes some behind the scenes changes, but Academy Award winning writer Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend) penned the pilot along with Marc Haimes (The Last Word).

The site adds that, "Titans revolves around the eponymous group of young Super Heroes-to-be from the DC Universe. The action series centers on Dick Grayson (probably best known for his alter ego as Robin), who emerges from the shadow of Batman to become Nightwing, the leader of a fearless band of new Super Heroes including Starfire, Raven and many others."

Not sure how this will work exactly - could be a whole mess of rights complications between the CW and TNT.. unless there's some sort of collaboration possible..

Teen Titans has had a bunch of different incarnations and the eventual late-teen Titans were re-branded as Young Justice.. So it's likely to draw elements from all these..

Original team was Robin, Kid Flash, Aqualad (Garth rather than Jackson Hyde/Kaldur'ahm), Wonder Girl and Speedy (Roy Harper)

Kid Flash/Wally West whom has already been locked in for eventually appearing in The Flash show..

Aqualad (Garth/Tempest originally - later replaced by Jackson Hyde who is ~kind-of~ the same person as animated Young Justice's Kaldur'ahm..)

Roy Harper (Speedy/Arsenal/Red Arrow) is unlikely to appear, already being a major character in Arrow..

Eventually the line-up changed to Robin, Kid Flash and Wonder Girl - who were joined by Cyborg, Raven, Starfire and Beast Boy..

This seems a more likely team - perhaps minus Kid Flash (though they could go with Impulse/Bart Allen if he's not tied up already for The Flash series!)

Cyborg (or at least his pre-Cyborg self) is due to appear in Bats vs Supes though, so that could count him out as well..

The team was also led later on by Ray Palmer (Atom - who will be part of Arrow this year) and added the young Superman clone Superboy/Connor Kent to their ranks..

So yeah.. going to be interesting how this shakes out..

Team roster rumoured for the pilot: Nightwing, Starfire, Raven, Hawk and Dove and Oracle..

Barbara Gordon/Batgirl/Oracle hasn't been a member of the Teen Titans before and Hawk and Dove (here apparently the Hank Hall/Dawn Granger incarnation) were only usually guest appearances as opposed to team regulars..

Looks like they are indeed steering clear of any Flash/Wonder Woman/Aquaman/Superman related characters..

They've not forgotten about this, but it's not on TNT any more. It'll be exclusive to a new DC streaming service run by Warner Bros. Geoff Johns, from the movies, and Greg Berlanti, from the TV shows, are involved, along with Akiva Goldsman and Sarah Schechter. The first three will be writing.

Geoff Johns being involved is a good thing, his run on the Teen Titans comics was really good.

So we've got the arrowverse, the gothamverse and now this, all separate to one another?

At least the marvel TV universe is still set in the cinematic universe.

Jesus. DC just can't get it right, can they?

There's also iZombie and Lucifer, though I suppose their comics are separate anyway.

I don't mind Gotham being separate. I'm happy with them doing their own thing and being weird and mental. Timing probably wouldn't fit anyway, with Bruce being as young as he is.

With the Arrowverse though they have the built in “multiverse” which is how Supergirl eventually crossed over with the others (after it got cancelled on one network and moved to the CW). If they want they could always say it was set in an alternate universe and cross them over at some point if they want a big storyline event.

Apparently it's written by the guy who wrote Batman and Robin

Googling turned up this article calling him out

Quote

Goldsman has never written a great film, and more often than not, his work is lazy, uninspired, or just plain bad. Yet time and again, his name turns up on projects, as he cashes his paycheck and puts in the hours to complete yet another derivative offering of slapdash Hollywood product. There’s a name for this kind of writer: a hack—someone who can churn out material that fits a requisite mold with little regard for artistic merit or considerations of quality. There are plenty of hacks capable of doing good work, but Goldsman’s name on a project is practically a guarantee of bloodless moviemaking. His films share a joyless, unimaginative vibe that suggests a film made by someone who doesn’t get much of a charge from making films. He’s the Brett Ratner of screenwriters.
