The backgrounds look nice... but the characters look a bit bad and the faces look terrible.

The devil horns hair bunches are cute tho.

To be honest, it looks under rendered and cheap. My daughter is a big fan of How To Train Your Dragon, both the films and the spin-off series on Netflix. The spin-off series clearly use the same models as the movies, but it's like playing a PC game with the detail turned down for your old graphics card - worse textures, less lighting, fewer shaders etc.

 

That's the feel I get from this trailer. The designs are good, the expressions etc are classic Ghibli, but the rendering quality is TV spinoff, not movie, and that's selling the whole thing short.

Christ that sounds bad - it’s like a poor fan dub. Although there is one great moment where it sounds like one of the milquemockney characters says ‘In this arsehole there is one rule that’s crucial’.

 

I’m warming to the look of it though. Obviously it would be better in the trad style, but for what it is it’s got something.

What the hell is even that?!! It looks like one of the free movies I skip past on Plex. I’ll give it a go without the dub just because it’s Ghibli, but this is from the same guy that did Earthsea so I’ll go in with low expectations.

I still don't want to believe that's Ghibli.

 

Maybe it's a kind of snobbery for hand-drawn stuff but I get no pleasure from looking at that. Maybe there is still great care and attention to detail, but the characters don't move right. I mean they don't move like humans.

 

Defintely not the target market though I guess.

Same here. Looks absolutely uninspired.

When Ghibli starts doing CGI movies, you know cartoons (read: traditional hand-drawn animation) are on their way out

Miyazaki's coming out of retirement. Again. To make a movie of Genzaburo Yoshino’s 1937 book How Do You Live? Apparently one of his favourite books. It's about a teenage boy who moves in with his uncle after his father dies. Suzuki describes the movie as "fantasy on a grand scale".

I thought he'd pretty much finished this one. I was under the impression it's been in production for ages.
