I know it sounds harsh given the circumstances around him leaving (although he says it’s been planned since July), but to me he’s probably the least important member of the group. I’ve never rated his VO that highly (it’s good but not as amazing as they make it out to be), so I’m intrigued to see who does it now. I think the person writing the review could do the VO, it might lead to a more personal touch.

It will be interesting to see where they go from here. EZA have been coasting for a while I think, they definitely need a huge shake up.

I think I agree with you in terms of onscreen presence but I had the impression he was wrangling the others behind the scenes. But maybe not. These new changes sound good.

And yeah totally agree with you about the shake-up needed. They kinda biffed it when the pandemic hit and it got really boring and uninspired (I stopped listening and cancelled Patreon myself). I get that they got the wind taken out of their sails just as they got into a new studio but I always liked them as a bunch of guys messing around in the garage rather than pound shop IGN so felt that they should have been able to handle it a bit better. Maybe that’s being unfair though. Worldwide pandemic and all that.

There’s a short video of Jones first talking about it here.

Quote

My son Milo has been hospitalized for the past 8 days. This news will undoubtedly feel sudden to all of you. His worsened condition came out of nowhere, and without getting into specifics, has no clear, identifiable cause. Maybe one day I’ll give you all the details but today’s Cup is concise, pre-recorded, and likely the only time you’ll see me for a spell. Milo’s doing much better than before, thank goodness, but his recovery will take weeks. I’m stepping away from Easy Allies to support my family for the time being, as I hope you all understand.

That was as of Feb 21st. By all accounts Milo is doing much better now as Jones has been posting weekly updates on his son’s progress.

I definitely used to enjoy it more when they were stuck in Jones’ garage on that sofa. Feels a bit corporate in the studio.

Kyle leaving was also huge. He was the most natural on camera and the funniest/weirdest.

Saying that, hopefully these new changes are successful, because as much as their output has nosedived in quality, it’s still better than most gaming coverage.

Yeah Bosman and lack of E3 really was the real stake through the heart.

Jones seems like a lovely chap though, I’ll deffo miss him being around next time I’m watching/listening to them. I have loads of great memories of enjoying them at their peak with Bossman, E3 coverage etc and he’s totally responsible for that.

I still listen to the podcast, but I’m not too sure why.  Blood has no personality and Damiani is insufferable. The reviews are very predictable, so don’t hold a lot of value. The loss of Kyle pretty much killed them for me. I’d much rather watch delayed input than pretty much any of the EZA output (unless Kyle is trying to be funny). The reactions stuff tends to be alright.

Ben Moore has announced he’s leaving too.

To be honest, I haven’t watched much of them for the past 6 months as I wasn’t really enjoying their content. Moving from the garage to the studio lost something for me, then Kyle left which was a huge blow. Now Jones and Ben.

Is their time up?

Its a real shame Ben has left, thought his Frame Trap show was superb, but the decision for his family to move back home hopefully work out well for them.

The patreon numbers seem decent still for EA.

They've just taken on a community manager and had a refresh of the brand. Hopefully this will help them after the three decent members have now left (Kyle, Brandon and Ben), lets hope Huber doesn't decide to leave though.

Oh shit Ben is by far the best host. Any idea if he’ll do his own podcast now?

I saw Huber had some shit personal stuff happen recently too.

I’ve listened to an episode or two of the main podcast recently as it felt quite traditional for this time of year and to be fair it was pretty good with Blood in the chair. I do think they’ll carry on.

They should just do something new in frame trap's place, Blood does a good job with the podcast but the bits that are only there because thats how Kyle used to do them sound awkward coming out of his (and before that, Jones') mouth.

I stopped listening to Easy Allies about 6 months after Kyle left. Someone here mentioned the MinnMax pod and I have been listening to that since.

This is probably harsh but listening to EA always felt a bit like I was just getting the views of people who’s only frame of reference is video games, whereas the people on MinnMax seem more rounded as people (e.g. more politically engaged, read books, etc).

Give Blood Frame Trap and put Brad on the podcast, if you must.

The best aspect of Blood chairing the podcast is that he allows discussion to meander into gaming history and cultural context in a way that Jones certainly didn’t. I think that would lend itself very well to Frame Trap, which is a slightly more intellectual program, comparatively speaking. Brad is not the guy for that show at all, sorry.

I feel really sad about Ben leaving, but mostly because it’s reminded me just how long it’s been since I was enjoying their output. I think I listened to one or two of the podcasts after Kyle left, and I’ve watched some Frame Trap and stuff, but I do feel like it’s been drifting further and further from what I used to like about them.

Kyle was just such a great Podcast host, and Jones and a blood seem like nice guys but they’re dull. I find the enforced positivity, love and respect ethos kind of leaves a lot of their criticism a bit bland. I love Isla and I’m really glad she’s feeling happy and confident now, but I do miss the wry cynicism she bought to everything before. Obviously I’d rather she was happy than the podcast had a grumpy voice I like, but it’s just another factor.

I always imagined that one day I’d have some cash to contribute to the patreon and I could become a most active part of the community, but since I’ve had more money I’ve not been enjoying their output anywhere near as much.

Also you have to wonder if the industry they built their business around commentating on exists anymore. (Big E3 conferences etc.)

He’s doing a decent job with one of my favourite podcasts, and Ben Moore is a hard act to follow, but JESUS FUCK is it painful listening to Bradley Ellis trying to read out emails on Frametrap 🙉 Get that cunt diagnosed with dyslexia and give him a free laptop and scribe or something. SORT IT OUT.

Ironically I jumped into listening to the podcast this week for the first time in a while and they had Kyle on as a guest. Not sure if it was that, or having Brad as a guest host, but everything was just so much more damn natural and had actually been fun to listen to.

Blood as a host really feels like 'going through the motions' if anything - just recycled Kyle bits from 5 years ago. I liked them as a group when they were GT, and the garage era, where the set up really led to a lot of fun collaborative projects. But since they got the studio it feels so by the numbers. I guess the pandemic contributed to that but now it's done with its still underwhelming.

Maybe the shift has been to 'community engagement' and streaming - like I've got time for that lol

Thanks for the headsup I’ll jump back in for an episode!

Watched that video of Kyle's about Elden Ring and GotY discussions - and some of what he said was total cobblers.

Being bored discussing good things, or being bored of other people sharing their passion and thinking no-one else wants to hear about it either? I hope he was just doing a bit, because that exact attitude is why so many gamers and gaming discourse is full of actual joylessness.

There's a reason those greatly loved things fill the discourse - because they genuinely are that amazing, and will still be thought and discussed years later because people love them so much.

Suggesting it will get forgotten then, just because he's personally bored with talking about it, I can only imagine someone having such a hot take back when Shakespeare first penned Macbeth or something, and it would have been just as silly an observation then.
