The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

That'll be a Hinox I think. Hugely intimidating on first sight but they're big, slow, bumbling softies really. Doesn't take too much to take them down

Spoiler

Shoot an arrow into their eye from a distance, that'll slow them down then either attack up close or keep firing arrows into that eye

I always feel a bit guilty when I come across them, seems like they just want to relax and knock some Zzz's  out in their little forests, doing no harm to anyone.

Spoiler

I think you can also have the option just sneak up on them too and thieve the goodies from around their necks, although there does come a time when some will need to be defeated to access a shrine or 3

Find yourself some hearty food to cook into a life boosting meal (plus either an attack or defence boosting meal too) and a Lynel fight won’t seem so tough. Or just don’t engage with them - I found out recently that they don’t actually want to fight you unless they see you as a threat.

think somebody posted the link in here but I cannot find it. Anyways, there’s an good episode of the Perfect Console podcast with Phil Fish, where he talks (albeit too briefly) about BotW - and four of his other favourite games and his career.

If anybody can recommend any other good podcasts about BotW then I’m all ears. It’s lovely to hear people wax lyrical about how great this game is.

Yeah, you can do that. Just last night:

Spoiler

I paraglided directly on top of one wearing the sneaky Sheikah garb, pinched his weapons and ran off without him waking up.

I've been bypassing most of the Lynels on Master Mode (because they're nearly all golden ones and I haven't until now had enough strong weapons), but I need some of the things they drop to finish upgrading certain outfits.

And (somewhat behind the rest of the world) we’re off….

It looks fun.

Ahh man, the feels - hairs standing up and everything! What a moment this is, so jealous of anyone getting to experience it for the first time

What’s really striking is that sense of scale and freedom. Go here, go there, whatever you want.
I rolled a bomb miles down a hill to then detonate in the distance and take out a little gang of nasties and it just rolled and rolled and to be able to still interact with something that far off was I think, a unique experience for me.

And playing through with the boy is a great shared experience. After Yoshi, Luigi’s Mansion and Pikmin which are all world class - it just seems impossibly huge in a good, long adventure way.

Using the sneak suit you can also stand in a Hinox’s hand, and they will lift you up to their chests when they fidget.

Not sure Googling "stunning and spanking" is the best way to research this though.

Probably not!

Some good tips here, although I think they overcomplicate it with the dodge in the third method. My tip is let the Lynel  barge at you, stun them with an arrow to the face, get on the back and spank ‘em with a big weapon:

I always felt bad killing them though.

Had some trouble beating Fireblight Gammon yesterday but managed it eventually. Just one more Champions Ballad memory left to do.

Last thing I did yesterday was a whistle stop tour of all the shops to stock up on arrows. Wasted a lot trying to get a korok on Death Mountain.

Also, after looking up arrow farming videos on YouTube I also need to get myself the Travel Medallion, which I was blissfully unaware of until now!

So we’re a week in and loving it.
Playing with my 7 year old is a great shared experience - he loves the exploring and on the way down to a village just went

’wow, that paraglider amazing…..’.

I’m constantly amazed at how solid the landscape is and how it all gels together. It’s remarkable really.

I threw a bomb at a couple of baddies yesterday and it somehow caused them to fight one another. One of those big things with the pointy snouts started attacking it's comrade, eventually picking it up and throwing it off a cliff.

I'm really enjoying it - there's a lot of flexibility on how things can be achieved so far.

I'm still not keen on the weapon degradation, but if I have any real complaint, it's the rain. Seriously, fuck the rain. I spent 10 minutes in a thunderstorm last night waiting for it to pass so I could climb a big flagpole (assuming there might be something worthwhile at the top). After the lengthy rainstorm, I finally climbed it only to find jack shit. It looks very atmospheric, but it's a pain in the ass gameplay-wise.

It seems like every time I want to climb something (or even worse, I'm halfway up climbing something) it starts to rain and I end up slipping back down. It's like The Legend of Zelda: Manchester.

A few more shrines down and a LOT more cooking done….

I really like the idea of mixing up different ingredients to give you a limited time in a new area - I thought it’d be a bind but actually works brilliantly.
The best bit really is my youngest saying ‘Daddy, can we play some Zelda after dinner?’  What a treat that is.

I've beaten one of the Divine Beasts now (Ruta) but am mostly exploring and opening up the map.

Last night I decided to visit an island I'd seen a way off the coast, so I paraglided across from a high cliff (although I needed to consume a couple of stamina top-ups on the way). When I landed I found out that I was on Eventide Island and would need to

Spoiler

complete three tasks and that, until these were complete, all my possessions would be removed (plus the game couldn't be saved). Yeah, thanks!

So, basically, link is now running around in his pants with no weapons, food, potions, anything. What I somehow managed to miss was the fact that I still had my rune powers, so I ended up in some sort of self-imposed hardcore mode where Link went full Rambo, taking out enemies with sticks and anything he could get his hands on. I gradually got better equipped as I recovered weapons and food from dead enemies or creatures I managed to catch or kill. It was only right at the very end that I realised I had my infinite bombs, plus all the other rune powers! Talk about make things hard for yourself!

Did it all without dying once though. :D

I’d forgotten about Eventide. That was a lot of fun. Might head there soon on this playthrough. Heffalump and Birdy down, and just entered Gerudo town, so it’ll soon be camel time. Enjoying this tour of Hyrule as much as the first. ❤️

I may return to it myself…I think I’ve got fifteen shrines left still after playing over 300 hours and obsessively combing the map, I’m just not sure I remember how to play it! Last time I had a go I couldn’t even deflect a Guardian blast, and I used to do it with a pot lid for fun.

Make sure you buy the DLC as it adds some necessary story stuff and is pretty good all round.

I’m trying to explain to my son that 2 weeks in and we’ve hardly started. It’s hard to grasp the scale tbh.
Hopefully he won’t lose interest.
We’ve got to sort out Lynel tonight…

6 years and 1 month later I finally completed the game.  Been stuck on Ganon for months.  Went off to learn parrying and got some ancient arrows which changed things up a bit.     Juuuuuust in time for the next instalment.

What I'm not happy about is that there are limited save slots that get overwritten by the autosaves so you can't really save an area to go back to.   Anyway around this?

I guess if I wanted to go complete more shrines I just use my last save before I fight ganon?  There's no post end game save?

As you can only do it after completing the Divine Beasts, the base difficulty of the Shrines is harder, which they can do because they know you'll already be pretty familiar with the game by that point and they can step things up.
