The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The most jarring thing about BotW IMO is how you have so much freedom in the overworld, especially with increased Stamina (Spider-Link!) but are then restricted in the Shrines.  No climbing, except where 'allowed' by ladders & other things that fling you up.

I understand why this had to be, as complete freedom to climb everywhere would break pretty much every Shrine, but having wrung the Shrine & overworld ideas almost completely dry in this game (I'm still finding new landmarks after close to 600 hours of play) I hope the next Zelda would be able to incorporate the freedom more elegantly.

How about trying the Sky/Loftwing idea from Skyward Sword again, only this time doing it right?  Much more floating islands with more to explore/find.  Perhaps ditch the Sky/Overworld division like SS had & have them both existing in the same gameworld at the same time, making exploration & discovery vertical as well as horizontal.  This way, Link can keep his stamina for climbing/gliding but (much like the Horse in BotW) crossing large distances requires the Bird.  Perhaps, if they really need to restrict the aerial part so you don't have too much freedom (<_<) the Bird can be more like the Divine Beast in the BotW DLC & require fuel, or perhaps can only ascend so high or fly so long without upgrades, which you acquire throughput the game.

I just had a look and it seems I’ve been playing BOTW for over 295 hours now...and I’m still finding new stuff. It’s quite incredible.

Is the dlc weird forest Master Sword challenge thingummy worth doing? I had a crack once but didn’t complete it, I got to a level where you are in a big water world so no idea how far in that is, but it’s the sort of thing that gives me the pip. Is the prize worth persevering for?

I can imagine. It's like nothing experienced before. The same feeling I got when first booting up legends such as Mario 64, Mario Galaxy, OoT. That magnitude.

I'm already regretting that it ends one day. Still, some 30 hours in, and haven't done a single Divine Beast. The sub- and sidequests combined with exploring what must be the best open world so far is keeping me busy enough.

And I still got an unplayed Mario Odyssey lying around here as well. Might die of an overdose if I'm not careful...

Some of the things I find very rewarding are finding new recipes on the walls of stables and taverns and then trying them for yourself, and discovering one of your lost memories.

Clearly a lot of time and effort went to creating this wonderfully alive environment. You have to wonder how many people worked tirelessly to create this marvelous game.

The thing I’ve discovered that I am pretty steamed about is that the ‘Hero’s Path’ tracker starts deleting your path after you’ve played for between 200 - 250 hours. I’m at over 295 hours. I discovered this because the Hero’s Path seemed to think I’d barely set foot in the Great Plateau.

So I’ve been having a lot of fun exploring places I could tell I’ve never been to find the last eight shrines...and now I can’t rely on it, I may as well just use a guide to find them. A real misstep on the part of the dlc there, no reason at all to limit its memory.

At this stage, it's the sound design and sparse music which is still so striking whenever I fire this up for a runaround. A tinkle of piano to heighten tension or a sumptuous chord to bring comfort, and then nothing...except for the sound of the breeze and what a sound that is. In hindsight, this aspect of the game only seems more brilliant and brave and unique.

And rain is just as annoying as in real life; no cooking, no climbing, no metal weapons...

Still, this game should come with a strong addiction warning on its box tbh.

At least the lightning is useful. ;)

I know but I hardly use that.

Still, 60 hours in, and I haven't done any of the divine beasts yet. Have done 30 shrines and discovered the Master Sword though...

Time to take a break methinks. I can honestly say that I've never been more addicted to a game than to this one. Should've been Edgetm s first 11 .

A real shame you can't mute the characters shouting at you every ten minutes.

The sound design is perfect. Relaxing af.

You can turn off those powers if that's what you mean. But yeah, can't mute them.

The weather is just done so perfect. Was genuinely scared when the Blood Moon arrived for the first time - I was actually just waiting for the night to pass (didn't fancy fighting any skeletons), gazing at the clear night sky, on a mountain ridge..then all of a sudden, a crap ton of ash came swarming in... ooh, I thought, a volcano nearby blown in by the wind? What attention to detail. Then the sky went red and I lost it.

Sooooo incredible.

I'm over 215hrs in. All divine beasts done and I think about 5 or 6 shrines left.

I'm just methodically mooching through the world with the Shrine locator on, trying to get those few remaining shrines. Once that's done and the Tarry town side quest is finished, I'll muller Ganon.

I've also been bossing the castle. I can 4 times out of 5 parry lasers even from a good distance away. I felt like a complete badass knocking back consecutive shots from 2 guardians. Then into a gate house to plaster a Lynel. Such a difference from the beginning when I'd cower from Guardians and go the long way round Lynels.

I just want some DLC where you can follow Kass around on his travels. Love that guy, such awesome, awesome design.
