The game is amazing but it’s hard to argue that the narrative & CPU characters aren’t a bit rubbish.

Theres so so much opportunity for character development, tragic backstory, side quests etc and it hasn’t been taken.

But why bother? The game is about climbing up hills and mountains to see what you can see.

The stupid story stuff just wastes time that could be better spent exploring. I’d far rather they left all that out and put more hills and mountains in.

The characters and narrative fit the game design and are just as memorable as any other Zelda game. Personally I found the champions story pretty touching. I mean, Urbosa rubbish?

Then start another franchise.

Has Zelda ever been strongly focussed on narrative? To me it's always been about exploration and puzzle solving. The story is pretty much the same in all of them.

Majora’s Mask possibly the best example of narrative in any game ever because you piece together the story out of order and without really realising you are doing so until it all comes together. It’s exquisite but has ruined every Zelda since when they don’t match up.

but all the rest have extremely touching moments - the cinematic at end of OOT when you recall all those little moments is so wonderful. Twilight Princess is like a best of, of musical stings and narrative memories.

its a fairly tale but you can’t help bonding with those little interactions even when it’s not as mind blowing as MM.

But it’s ok for you to say Majora’s Mask is the worst? I didn’t wet my knickers cos you said so, just accept others don’t share your views.

its just a fact i didn’t finish it, alone out of all the major console versions. The flying is just so bad, spent ages looking at empty sky or dots of enemies. Even links animations look wooden and awkward which is all you can say about the story. The ground levels are tiny and lack any sense of adventure or exploration, and when you hit the point it basically tells you to go around them all again it’s “ok fuck that”

excellent Uber creepy bad guy, good combat mechanics and great puzzles but the worst overworld of all

Majora's Mask is the exception that proves the rule the others are all save Princess Zelda and free Hyrule from Ganon's grasp. It's always been about the game play first and foremost. Even MM is only made more interesting due to the time travel.

Skyward Sword has the best dungeons of all imo.

Majoras Mask is incredible. I completely agree with Linkster on this one. Skyward Sword is the only Zelda game I've never finished. And I finished Spirit Tracks so that should tell you how little I thought of it.

Yeah the dungeons are really great.

I think people are being a bit simplistic about narrative though. Take The Wind Waker and the moments like when you encounter the Kokori having evolved and the deku tree - or that stunning moment when you find Hyrule frozen in time. Or when you meet Skull Kid in Twilight PrIncess (I was gutted he didn’t make it into the Lost Woods of BOTW) or hear the Song of Healing. It’s these moments strung together that give a sense of continuity and familiarity to Zelda over the years that BOTW lacks and hence while it’s a superb game it’s not one of my favourite Zelda titles.

I think BOTW is far more sweeping and epic than any of the others. Those moments you described were cool for sure, but BOTW is unmatched in its grandeur. I don't know if you've done the DLC but Champions Ballad has a particularly poignant ending imo, brought a tear to my eye so it did. I also played through the entire thing with my 4 year old daughter so it has extra special memories for me. God when our horse died in molten lava and I had to lie and say he'd just gone for a nap

The joy on her face when I found out that wasn't the end for him. I hope people don't consider that a spoiler.

The sparseness of the narrative and Gannon as basically a force of nature is every bit a design choice as the sparseness of the soundtrack. You might not like it, but it's very, very deliberate. And very, very tied in to all the other design choices surrounding the game.

Skyward Sword is a forum marmite game. Loved it, miss the motion controlled sword fighting and it carries a surprising amount of DNA to BOTW considering how very different games they are. Major's Mask is both brilliant and unrepeatable.

Quick question: do you make elixirs the same way as meals?

Meals seem fairly logical to make, but I haven't really bothered with potions and whatnot.

Really enjoying it so far, currently tackling the third beast. Has been a big surprise, as I don't normally do open-world games.

Been playing this on and off for almost a year -I've been playing this with my son, and he gets very easily sidetracked- have only beaten Vah Rutah so far, but this game never ceases to amaze me. I'd almost say it transcends the medium. It's nearly perfect. The only thing I don't like is how the weapons degrade too quick. For the rest it's flawless - so far.

And it made me wonder: are the old game series peaking? Take Zelda. Will they ever top BotW? Or Mario Odyssey (seems likely as they can go anywhere with this series). But what about the Castlevania series? Surely that one has already peaked years ago. MGS is another series that has peaked with PP. SSB being yet another example. To me it seems a lot of the series that were established in the 80s/90s have reached their full potential, and I wonder how much longer they'll be able to continue these series

As much as I love BotW, I would like Zelda to go back somewhat towards having unique theme dungeons as part of the overworld.  In this game, there’s a pretty clear disconnect between the overworld & the Shrines, & I would hope they could find more of a balance.

I think we're still to have the perfect Zelda game... The overwold in BOTW is pretty much perfect, but I think there's lots of scope for more puzzle dungeon/castle/tower environments... a bit more 'internals' with depth.  Hyrule Castle in BOTW was amazing... would've liked more caves and underground stuff to explore.

MGS peaked with PP? No way. Unless your looking at peaking out the turd scaled
