The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Pro mode is a load of bollocks, it turns off your mini map and shrine detector. I tried it for about 1 minute then turned my stuff back on.

The map and shrine detector is on by default because that's the way Nintendo have deemed the game should be played.  And you'd never find all the shrines without that comforting beep beep beep.

The Pro interface doesn't turn off your locator, it only makes it invisible when whatever you're targeting isn't nearby.

Easing off the story to go back and explore some areas of my map that look a little bare.  Found several shrines & koroks this morning, finally upgraded the last 2 bits of my climbing set to level 2 for the bonus and found the last labyrinth to complete that gear set (Now gotta farm the Lynels to upgrade it!).  Oh, I also found the first piece of the rubber armour.  Successful adventuring!

Sounds good although I do think the weather report is good, although it's probably possible to judge when the bad weather is coming. Does it not even show your hearts or stamina?

It shows hearts permanently and the stamina wheel whenever you use stamina. As revlob says, whenever you're near a shrine the detector pops up and starts going off (which is an inordinately exciting moment, incidentally).

I've been playing with the HUD on pro mode since about the second hour and haven't looked back since. No mini map forces you to take more attention of your environment and think about the route you're going to take. You don't really need the rune or champion power symbols because you just remember what you've used. There's less clutter, and as for the weather, just look at the sky and make a decision.

Personally, I find having the HUD off makes the game a better experience and I would definitely recommend it.

Spent another hour-and-a-bit on this last night (don't get tonnes of block time on it, really). Just doing the usual of going around, hunting for shrines, foraging for ingredients, the occasional Korok, etc.

I've been musing on this recently; it doesn't really feel like a game, in the sense of what I'm used to playing. I generally prefer games that have some kind of narrative to pull you along, but with enough scope to have at least some sense of agency. RE4, the rebooted Tomb Raider, Uncharted, Shadow of the Colossus, the other Zeldas. Games that give you a reason to play it, and a sense of accomplishment as you progress.

With this though, it feels more like going for a walk in the countryside for a bit. It's a genuinely relaxing experience (the way I'm currently playing it). I've not tried any divine beasts yet, and have scarpered quick sharp the moment I promised the Zoras I'd go find some shock arrows (I'll probably head back there tonight). But as an experience of just dipping in and having a wander for an hour, it's not the hollow or artifical experience it would likely be in a lesser (any other) game.

Which is strange – if this is possibly the most expertly and lovingy crafted game ever, for it not to actually feel much like one… I guess that's an acievement, whether they intended it or not.

The HUD in this game is surprisingly ugly and not in keeping with the game's overall aesthetic. I didn't know you could turn it off, so will definitely be doing that. I also turned off the shrine locator immediately as the beeping was annoying and took away the sense of wonder as I explored. I might turn it back on once the game becomes a bit more gamey and less of an adventure for me, but right now I'm happy just blundering about in whichever direction I feel like, navigating by which towers I can see in the distance. For instance, last night I was by the dueling peaks and remembered there was a memory showing them, so off I went. Once I'd found it, I saw a tower in the distance. Long story short, I'm now in the Gerudo Highlands with no quests to go there, nothing to do there specifically except explore.

The other night I went exploring and found a sunken ruins type place, another memory at the end and a weird lion centaur thing that killed me in a single hit. When I respawned, I snuck past it and headed further north into some snowy tundra, only to freeze as it was too cold even for my warm tunic.

The game has such a fantastic sense of place and I'm compelled to keep playing, whereas Horizon Zero Dawn, which is a tangentially similar game, left me utterly cold and not bothered at all.

Mini-maps are a blight on open world games and it's blatantly clear that the game was designed to be played without it, but that one was pasted on anyway to help people who've become institutionalised and can't cope without it.

I guarantee there'd be a 1000x complaints if there was no map.

Personally, I like the map. I have less time to dick about being lost these days, and no desire to open the main map every two minutes.

Not everyone plays the same way.

Exactly. It's the best of both worlds really. The key thing is that the game world is designed so it's possible and enjoyable to navigate without a permanent sat-nav and breadcrumb trail. Signs, landmarks, vantage points etc.

Use your eyes for shrines that are hidden within mountains or those in a blizzard. Ok!

Every single hidden shrine I've found so far has had some kind of visual clue nearby... don't forget to look at the sky

No it's saying that at the start of the game the shrine locator is a pain in the arse but by the end of the game you'll be grateful for it as you try and find all the shrines.

He's literally looking right at the shrine, while saying "a shrine is nearby! thanks detector". At the very least, he's a simpleton.

They're pretty trivial once you've got Stasis+. It turns off all of their trickier attacks.

Really?!

I took down my first Lionel. It was fucking hard, had silvery hair and a zebra body.

....the hardest in the game  baptism of fire or what.
