The power up you get from the Gerudo beast is brilliant. In fact, all of them are, but that's the one i love the most. Just did the shrine quest where you have to beat up 3 brothers and it was very useful for that.

So, I've done all the beasts, about 120 koroks, most of the memories, have the master sword and about 75 shines. I'm gonna mop up most of the remaining shrines, maybe to 100 if i can find them and then kill Ganon. If I struggle getting to the 120 I may have to consult a guide as I'm already finding it difficult to find new ones now. I'm sort of wandering around areas of the map which look a little empty hoping for the best.

I was going to get to 100 shrines then do Gannon but I just hit 77 shrines, 7 is the best number so seems a good time to go do him in!

Decided just to explore a bit today... Fast traveled to Akkala, found I had enough stuff to get 2/3rds of the ancient armour and then just started wandering down the coast all the way to the bridges over to Tingel Island. Took a few hours just walking and exploring. The whole Tingel island bit was great and very rewarding.

Tried my hand on some horseback combat tonight, ended up shooting the big ass moving guardians in the eye while riding my horse like some Gandalf-Legolas lovechild. Fucking invincible. Got knocked off my horse by a Bokoblin firing shock bolts at me 5 seconds later and got clobbered by two mounted Bokoblins wielding spears. Game over, ancient cores and other goodies lost. Heroism can fade quickly.

While I wouldn't say I've got it down, I'm now much better at Shield Parrying the Guardian Lasers than I was, & subsequently I'm more confident about exploring the area around the castle at a low level (2 heart & 2 Stamina upgrades) than I was on my first playthrough.

It can still go bad quick however.  I took care of some stationary Guardians around the Central Tower with Shield Parrys & emboldened by my success, I went after a moving one, only for one Stationary Guardian I missed to start targeting me in the back.  Thrown off my rhythm, i missed the first parry & the 2 of them then had me on the run, burning through 4 fairies & 2 shields before I managed to get back in control of the situation. :(

Listen for the very distinctive 'bip' just before they fire. As you hear it, hit parry. Don't rush it, don't second guess it. Stay calm. Just press the button. Bip - press. I find it much more reliable than Spainkiller's (still epically useful) visual cue.

Also if it's a walking guardian be backing away all the time, they will set the optimal distance. It will still take 3 parries, and sometimes the reflected shot is a glancing hit, and four parries might be needed.

I stay locked on by holding L the entire time. I always go by the audio cue, that final beep. A big problem I had was that I reacted to that beep too quickly; slowing it down saw more consistent success (plus, since I had the shield raised, failure due to a late reaction meant a broken shield rather than death).

I tackled the Camel beast this morning.  I got stuck for ages trying to get up to the second floor area after trying one technique only to think of another easier way to do the same thing about 20 minutes later.  The boss is annoying me now, I had to suicide myself in the end as I needed to get to work and we were at a stalemate:

Spoiler

I was at the second phase where he's dropping metal columns and sending lightning everywhere.  I must have run around trying to hit him with arrows for about 5 minutes.  I then tried throwing my sword at him (can you throw the master sword?) all while the stupid Gerudo woman was banging on about harnessing the lightning and if only I had something metal but as soon as I do I get shocked and drop all my shit (THE most annoying mechanic in the entire game btw).

You have to

pick up the metal shards with magnesis and

hold them near him when they're about to be struck

Thanks, I'd never have thought of that on my own.

Spoiler

I just don't think of the rune abilities as being combat abilities.  I really should try to use them more often!

The satisfaction of zooming along on horseback whilst taking out bokoblins, also on horseback, with your bow. Not even bothering to go back and finish them off - just the act of talking them off their seat is enough to prevent a chase. Feels amazing.

Is it like a brief press or do you have to keep the L button squeezed until the parry is performed?

Yep. Hold ZL (on Switch) the whole time. And don't have the Goron Beast gift active. Then just press A as soon as you hear the bip.

Why do you need to disable the Goron ability? It works fine with it active. It just means if you miss, you won't have a fiery death.

It makes it much harder to see where the parry window is.
