Minor spoiler for a particular shrine:

When you have to carry the ice cube through the fiery obstacle course. How did people do the last obstacle? I stasis-whacked the ice cube and then quickly magnesis'd the metal crate to block the flames from above - it worked but didn't feel like the "official" solution. Great shrine anyway :D

Exactly how I did it, too. Presumably this is the correct solution.

Finally read the Edge review and they nailed it, opening paragraph describes the game perfectly!

In my ongoing quest of finding the missing 40 odd shrines I spotted one about 3 yards from a tower.... I mean I must have downs something on the other side of the map that removed the cloaking device on it or something ;)

That ice cube shrine

Spoiler

You don't need to get the complete ice cube through. After attempting a couple of crazy ideas towards the end,  I tried just carrying it through the fire and my slightly melted ice cube was accepted.

Oh holy SHIT the greatest thing just happened.

Riding out to my next tower in a thunderstorm, I slowed down to talk to a stranger on the path. I twigged from the sarcastic patter that it might be a Yiga clan member, and sure enough it was. Jumped off my horse ready to take her on.

Before I even knew what was happening, she got hit by lightning and was instantly toast. Mate, that Vicious Sickle is made of metal, you idiot! Burst out laughing. I'm still giggling.

The tower I just reached was with the help of a pin I'd put on the map. I honestly can't remember when I put that pin in, it certainly wasn't in the last week or so of playing. That sort of sums it up, doesn't it? You might get back to your goals, but you'll do two hundred other things first.

So after 105 hours I went to hyrule castle and 'completed' the game.

Not spoilery really but

Spoiler

I thought after taking down Ganon I'd still be able to go and finish up everything I'd missed.

I can, of course, but the save file that says I've completed it is the save it makes just before the final Ganon fight. I had dreams of running around a Ganon free Hyrule and being able to check out the castle properly.

Still the greatest game ever, obviously.

Decided to try and explore some more before I go fight Ganon. I can see where people are coming from about the game being big now. I'm marking stand out areas on my map and then on my way there I'll be gliding along the air, I'll look to the side and suddenly "whoa, wait, is that a village?".

Also I think I'm running out of shrines that are out in the open, they're basically all hidden now.

One criticism: here are too many combat shrines, and they are too similar. The Major Tests of Strength are challenging mid game, but by end game they are far too easy. There needed to be a next level, and potentially more variation in enemy types.

Am I right there's no Darknuts in this too? That's a Zelda staple.

I like the progression a lot, but the lack of a few mainstays is is really noticeable. Maybe they tried them and thought they didn't work, but Darknuts it's seem to fit perfectly plus you could fit the odd Armos around the various ruins in the game and the lack of Tektites on Death Mountain seems like sacrilege. Plus Redeads is OoT properly shit me up. They could have been used to induce the Fear in a corner of the map.

Maybe we'll see some in the DLC.

Enemy variety is definitely the biggest weakpoint in the game. I really think they could have done with another 5-10 enemy types and kept some exclusive to each region rather than just making the same enemies fire or ice. After the halfway point I felt like I'd basically seen all the game had to offer in terms of enemies, although one new miniboss type did pop up near the end which I wasn't expecting.

^ That's a good idea about having some kind of redead infested corner of the map. Could have stuck poes in there too.

I haven't gone back there since being beaten ten times. I certainly think they need to assess their diet though - how many mighty bananas are stocked up there? I think that's why I kept failing as I wanted to steal every last bunch of bananas. I hate bananas in real life.

Anyone know if the enormous stone

Spoiler

Sword

in the Gerudo highlands does anything? I said an out loud "Holy fuck" when I found it. It looks brilliant, but wondered if it does anything cool. Also are there any other similarly giant items around the landscape?

Might want to take a photo of it...

I'm wandering, and indeed have wandered down the south east. It's quite relaxing at the beach, but there doesn't seem to be that much point being here and the shops are rubbish so I might head up towards where I'm supposed to be, which i think was heading up to akkala or somewhere.

But on the other hand, I might try and see if I can jump onto

Spoiler

that big electrical dragon

I saw a few times on the way to the stable first. Because, well, why not! Must be there for some reason. Got some boots and a hat that'll help, but I feel i might need to try find the tunic as well...

They really need to sort out the Guardian parries for Hard Mode. Or make it cost you the shield. I wandered around Hyrule Castle Town just casually taking them out.

Until I got one where I just missed the timing repeatedly. And when you get them as they were meant to be, they are seriously nasty.

It suddenly gets interesting again when you've got multiple Guardians to deal with at once. I'd like Hard Mode to always make them travel in groups.

I'm not sure if photos of stuff count if you take them before you have the appropriate quest.

Spoiler

They do. I watched my daughter do that particular mission and having to slog back into the mountain again to photograph the sword that she had found when she was looking for the 8th statue. So I thought, stuff that when it came to my turn to do it and I took the photos at the same time. It worked fine.

Today I learned that it's impossible to attach Octo Balloons to a sleeping Hinox. To be fair to the game I went in thinking it was a bit of a long shot, but this is just about the only utterly stupid thing I've tried that hasn't come off.

i got your club nebb.png

Where in Hyrule do I get that mask?

I think it's just a limited development time issue. They've gone for 120 shines because that's an appropriate number for the size of the world and they've made an ace job of placing and hiding them in the environment. And they've done their best designing puzzles for as many as they could. Then they've filled the rest with theses incredibly similar or identical fights. Not ideal, maybe they would have got around to putting a bit more variety in there if they'd had time,  but the game had to be released at some point.

As the game progresses though, it becomes even more about the enjoyment of finding or revealing a shrine. If there are puzzles to solve inside, that's a bonus. If it's a test of strength, it will be over very quickly. Which I quite liked, because it demonstrates how far I've come and how much stronger Link is. And I want them to be over quickly if it's just another three armed spinny robot.

The part where I felt the lack of enemy variety and becoming too powerful hurt my experience was with the divine beast bosses and Calamity Ganon himself. Apart form slight variations, they all feel far too similar and can be dispatched in the same way, using your regular combat methods, and very easily if you're powerful.   My expectations were pretty high though. Main bosses were the one area where I was properly disappointed with the game.

I did really like all those action sequences that are a bit like one part of a boss fight though. Similar to using you spinner up the walls against Stallord in Twilight Princess, and very much like using your Loft Wing to attack the weak points of the parasite infected Lavias before you jump onto it for a game of ping pong.
