Minor spoiler for a particular shrine:

When you have to carry the ice cube through the fiery obstacle course. How did people do the last obstacle? I stasis-whacked the ice cube and then quickly magnesis'd the metal crate to block the flames from above - it worked but didn't feel like the "official" solution. Great shrine anyway :D

Yep, that's what I did too. I couldn't shake the feeling that there must be a way of bypassing almost the entire thing, but I couldn't work out how.

I can understand this sentiment <_<

I have a few mates who aren't that much into games, a few who are only into racing or sport games and when they call around I'd usually play something else. A visit to the Great Fairy springs to mind as something that would be notably cringeworthy

If I was to play Zelda how I play on my own they'd probably think I'm a bit crazy.

It would be too hard to explain why I'm charging my sword and chopping grass for no reason, climbing odd looking rock formations and structures, spending ages trying to tame an animal or throwing stones about the place while completely ignoring the quest or task I'm SUPPOSED to be doing.

Too hard to explain how all these things flood me with nostalgia and a curious unexplainable joy, but also hope, hope finally, of where this franchise might someday go... 8-)

That said, a couple of my mates are open minded enough to appreciate a visual work of art/animation so don't mind me taking my time walking slowly out in the wild absorbing the sounds and the way the light changes. Then, when they take control of Link themselves (using Wii U gamepad with subtle gyro controls), it's cool how quickly they become captivated by the magic that's at work here and the possibilities open to them...

I've lost count of how many times this game had me thinking 'hmph... how fuckin' amazing is that?, like, the fact that they've thought of this and implemented/realized it so perfectly... fuckin' brilliant' :hat:

I don't really know where I'm going with this... but, I would say, if you HAVE to play with an 'audience' and you find that it's altering or diluting your experience of the game then, yeah, maybe you should save it for another time.

Trust me, games of this quality are few and far between so you'd be wise to get the most out of it.

TL;DR: ONLY PLAY ZELDA IN FRONT OF COOL PEOPLE! ^_^

This post is really great, Gavin. I think you've probably nailed the issue.

Of course, when people arrive home and wonder in the room you can't stop them from watching whatever you're doing, but I'm not sure why they occasionally feel the need to tell you that whatever you're playing is boring when you're clearly not finding it boring.

With this Zelda it doesn't bother me really - other than making the making the experience of playing it less relaxed - because the game has received such obvious accolades and has been so universally praised. It's more irritating with something like - oh I don't know, Rez or Okami. I mention those because they felt so brilliant and unloved (outside of this forum and a few other online zones) and most of the people I stayed with back then really didn't see the value in them at all (probably because they had never heard of them before, which bizarrely seems to be a criteria for whether something is good or not ((!?)). It can feel sad not to be able to share what we enjoy!

I think I'm probably the only person playing regularly on the WiiU tablet screen, which is not ideal, but it being at 480p does have one benefit - no frame rate issues whatsoever.

I'm loving the puzzles in this by the way. Sure they're not usually very tricky, but I was really stuck on getting the bonus chest in one of the shrines last night. I decided to sleep on it, and literally as I started writing this post I think I've worked out what to do. :)

The yiga clan base is irritating the shit out of me right now.

The stealth section?

Spoiler

I cheesed the last room, I managed to find a spot where they couldn't hit me and rained bombs and arrows down on them.

Add me to the list of players using the gamepad to play it. I think it looks fine on the screen. Why pay 280 quid to play one of the best games ever, when it runs perfectly fine on a console i already own. (please switch owners, take this with a pinch of salt)

I also did it that way, but there has to be a more elegant solution.

Spoiler

First off I tried to precariously balance the ice cube on top of the metal block and lift it over the arch. Too difficult though.

The way people talk about that section you'd think it was an hour long epic, not two rooms featuring a few guards with extremely predictable routes.

I also like how inept their boss was after, it was quite fitting.

I can see why people would have issues with that guard room but the solution is simple.

Spoiler

From the balcony shoot a fire arrow at one of the wall scrolls to reveal a hidden room, when the guards are all turned away from the new entrance glide over to the room, vault over the small wall in the room and hide in there until the guards stop being suspicious. You also get several hundred rupees for finding this room.

I started this on Tuesday and I reckon I'll be good to finish it tomorrow if I decide to just go straight to the end. I wouldn't mind chasing more upgrades first however so I might give it an extra day.

Me too!!!! Will get a Switch with Mario at Christmas but in the meantime I'm probably playing 80% tablet, 20% 60" TV Goodness. It really runs beautifully on the WiiU tablet and looks great. I have saved some of the bigger moments for TV play, but it's also allowed me to get 100 plus hours in without upsetting the wife :)

I thought it was too easy, too simplistic, and too short. Running through all the yiga just before you get to that section felt daft too.

The weakest bit of the main quest by a mile for me. Although the boss fight at the end was enjoyable.

Trying to sneak kill them all was pretty tricky.

I also wonder whether anyone has just fired up and attacked them all. I managed to do that in the first room, but i reckon in the second room it would be very tough to kill them all.

Look at the stables on your map. One of them has a huge hill in front of it, the other side of which is a large circular structure, visible on the map.

The ruined colosseum. I cleared it out, just the once.
