The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I've just tried running around in the Korok Forest now, after installing the update. There's a huge improvement to the frame rate. It's not a rock-solid 30fps, but it's much, much closer, in what was one of the worse-affected areas in the whole game.

I'm playing on the Switch.

Are you on Wii U or Switch?

Perhaps part of the the problem is that there's been people around and watching when I've been playing recently. It seems better to keep this one to relaxing on your own more than with others watching, unless you're on a set piece of sorts...

I can understand this sentiment <_<

I have a few mates who aren't that much into games, a few who are only into racing or sport games and when they call around I'd usually play something else. A visit to the Great Fairy springs to mind as something that would be notably cringeworthy

If I was to play Zelda how I play on my own they'd probably think I'm a bit crazy.

It would be too hard to explain why I'm charging my sword and chopping grass for no reason, climbing odd looking rock formations and structures, spending ages trying to tame an animal or throwing stones about the place while completely ignoring the quest or task I'm SUPPOSED to be doing.

Too hard to explain how all these things flood me with nostalgia and a curious unexplainable joy, but also hope, hope finally, of where this franchise might someday go... 8-)

That said, a couple of my mates are open minded enough to appreciate a visual work of art/animation so don't mind me taking my time walking slowly out in the wild absorbing the sounds and the way the light changes. Then, when they take control of Link themselves (using Wii U gamepad with subtle gyro controls), it's cool how quickly they become captivated by the magic that's at work here and the possibilities open to them...

I've lost count of how many times this game had me thinking 'hmph... how fuckin' amazing is that?, like, the fact that they've thought of this and implemented/realized it so perfectly... fuckin' brilliant' :hat:

I don't really know where I'm going with this... but, I would say, if you HAVE to play with an 'audience' and you find that it's altering or diluting your experience of the game then, yeah, maybe you should save it for another time.

Trust me, games of this quality are few and far between so you'd be wise to get the most out of it.

TL;DR: ONLY PLAY ZELDA IN FRONT OF COOL PEOPLE! ^_^

Just reading the eleventy billion page thread on this over at GAF and the general consensus is the Switch version is massively improved with small drops in some intensive areas and the WiiU version has a small, but negligible improvement.

Evertide Island is on some Rambo shit, proper game highlight. Got blood moon halfway through which made it even more fun. One of those bits were the gameplay was way more rewarding than the prize. Can't (can really) believe it's taken me this long to visit.

I was dreading getting a blood moon there.  Thankfully didn't!

I'm somewhere around 60 hours on this at least, and I still haven't set foot anywhere west of the starting plateau. There are already enough chunks of the map I've uncovered but not visited...

I did finally find the Korok guy again. Made his birthday and Christmas all in one with the amount of seeds I had for him.

I've done about 50 hours now and I've got bugger all to show for it! No bosses defeated, only 24 shrines, one memory and a handful of side-quests. At this rate its going to take me hundreds of hours to get done. The problem is that I rarely get to play for more than an hour at a time so really taking anything more substantial on than running in circles and finding one shrine is beyond me!

Apparently the framerate has been improved with a patch today.

Interesting because I had just started to see some real issues in handheld mode.

I got to Evertide but then bottled out! I think that will be my focus tonight. Sounds like fun.

Use the towers like it showed you at the start! Just clamer up one, scan around and pin them to get the icons on the map. None of the shrines are huge and you can always see a couple from each tower to get you started.

Yes, that's my method. Was more pointing out that I'm making slow progress but really enjoying it all the same!

I decided to mop up the last of the memories last night so headed to Hyrule Castle for the first time. Upon searching for the memory I fought a

Stalnox, upon beating him I received the

Hylian Shield. <3 Is this thing indestructible?

I then came across my first Lynel that I felt confident enough to take on. A 3000 HP boyo.

In the first gatehouse of the castle. I thought he was quite easy, but I think I am massively overpowered. The Hylian Shield meant I took barely any damage from him and cleaned him up quite quickly

I then found the final memory and took myself back off to Impa.

Who informs you of the TRUE final memory. There was someone who couldn't work out where it was, I thought it was quite obvious from the get go.

The guardian graveyard on the road back towards Dueling Peaks/Hateno

One thing I did find interesting about this memory was

You know when he remembers then the Shiekah slate pops up with the picture that was in the camera for this memory...Well I took a picture of the painting on the wall before leaving Impa to go find it. THAT picture was what showed up, I thought that was pretty cool, I wonder what would happen if you didn't take that picture.

So anyway, when all that was done, even though I was being pushed towards fighting Ganon, I decided to have a go at Eventide Island.

This may be a consequence of being over powered again, but I thought it was really easy and not as much of a spectacle as people made out. I did it first go. I sneaked up to the Hinox, got onto his belly and stole the ball without waking him. Went and deposited the ball and then for the craic, decided to take on the Hinox. I know they're not the most difficult in the world but I feel like I shouldn't have WANTED to fight him. Maybe if I actually tackled it when I first encountered it, 50-odd hours ago, it might have been more challenging and rewarding.

Might as well just go beat Ganon now...

I did the same thing with the picture :)

Saw a funny little sight as I climbed up to & looked down from an observation platform.  2 Bokoblins were chasing a wild Boar in an open field that was literally running circles around them.  They keep trying to spear it & missing, & it kept running in a big circle.  This went on for about a minute or 2 before the Boar broke out the cycle & ran off, with the Bokoblins just watching it leave, before returning to their patrols.

Minor spoiler for a particular shrine:

Spoiler

When you have to carry the ice cube through the fiery obstacle course. How did people do the last obstacle? I stasis-whacked the ice cube and then quickly magnesis'd the metal crate to block the flames from above - it worked but didn't feel like the "official" solution. Great shrine anyway :D

No, it was exactly where I initially thought it would be based on the picture; it's just such a big area to search I didn't find it until the day after, when I went back to

check on whether a bunch of swords I found were Traveller's swords or Traveller's Claymores.

I must have just run past it on the other side of an obstacle that hid the glow.

Otherwise, it sounds like we did exactly the same thing, right down to the sweet loot we got, and taking a pic in Impa's house.

I also went back into the castle environs again after that, to research some recipes; I had forgotten all about the associated side quest that was one of the reasons I decided to sneak in in the first place!

So, just the final Divine Creature for me, maybe a bit more upgrading of kit now I've found a third Great Fairy, and then it's Ganon time, baby!

Or, or, I could just explore this new area a bit more, do some side quests, chill a bit, cook some grub. Zelda can suffer in torment a day or two longer, right? Girl's got pluck (and I owe her for that little tantrum that I have now conveniently been reminded of by the picture quest...).

This is great news. I was worried Nintendo might not bother with patches and the like considering their games are generally so bug free and complete on release. This pleases me.

It's moments like this that are unreal to me. I've been out of gaming for a long time but when I see stuff like this it amazes me. It's like watching a film. On top of that the visual style is so beautiful that it's like watching a Ghibli film!!!
