Depends - like all critters, if you don't sneak, some will spot you and head off. Sometimes you can then sprint and catch them even then, but fairies head up and out of reach.

I find it much more reliable if I sneak up to them to catch them - I have definitely lost fairies by walking up to them. YMMV. Maybe you can walk up behind them reliably (i.e. in the same direction they're drifting in).

I dunno. I see a load of them and then just nip round and grab them all. One or two further away might fly off, but I catch most of them. Same as fireflies.

Dragonflies, lizards, etc. sure, are harder to catch.

The only way you should be doing this is to KILL THEM ALL. Like a Hero. And hiding behind walls while taking potshots to do so definitely counts as heroic.

This was early in the game. Now, they are the hunted. I've even taken two out at once with the same shield parry.

Got a bit hairy in the

northern Labyrinth and forgotten temple areas

when I had three targetting me at once; but in these cases, stand close to cover (usually another guardian) to block line of sight from two of them, and take 'em out one-by-one. Doesn't work so well with mobile Guardians.

I'm pretty sure the Ancient shield also reflects Guardian blasts even if you miss the parry.

Now, having said I hunt Guardians, I now find myself with the prospect of farming Lynels for their parts?

Right. Most of them. Sneak and you'll get 'em all first time. I find that the combined amount in your pockets and around the shrine = 4. You can pick up more by slashing grass, classic-Zelda-stylee.

Slightly off topic; I know it's probably pronounced lyn-ELLE, but I'm not the only one who calls them Lionels, right?

The stealth suit solves all these issues which is why it's the GOAT. I feel like I've lost a limb when I have to switch to another one in the cold/hot areas. Also increased running speed at night is one of the best full suit perks.

Genius. This just became my new "shopping" outfit.

Still going on this, I have killed Ganon but gone back in to mop up the shrines and explore.

Yesterday I found some giant bones with a Bokoblin/Moblin camp underneath it, started a fight which soon went badly as there were so many of them, I back up the Jaw bone thinking now they will come at me one at a time which worked until the Moblin started throwing the Bokoblins up the jaw bone behind where I was standing!

Goron City really reminds me of a theme park. So much so (with the music etc), I'm getting nostalgic.

Oh, and rollercoasters. Confirms it. It's brilliant here

Yeah, and the old legendary Goron leader carved out of the mountain doing the Hulk Hogan pose towards Death Mountain, with his little 'uns beside him all smiling.

Ah, man, I decide to infiltrate the castle again, this time through what looks like a mine shaft.

I come across a chamber with what appears to be fossilized ancient Guardians embedded in the walls; i.e. in the solid rock foundations of the castle mountain itself. A hint that this cycle has been going on for much, much longer than 10,000 years. What else are the Sheikah not telling us, eh?

And I had to abandon my infiltration *again*. This time, I bomb through a weak wall into what looks like the castle jail; I'm in a cell. Get the door open by shooting an eyeball in a blob of tainted stuff, come out and have to take on a Moblin and a Lizalfos - horrible combination to deal with; one fast and hard to hit, the other hard hitting.

Moblin hits me so hard I go flying. Into another cell, whose door slams down, imprisoning me so I can't get back out. Moblin guy then pisses off, just leaving me there to rot.

So yeah, I can fast-travel out - but now I have to go through the whole sneaking in palaver yet again. Last time because I fell off the castle wall like a klutz.

The doors to those cells are controlled by nearby switches, you should be able to hit them with arrows from within the cells.

If I make some heat resist elixirs/food to get to Goron city is there somewhere there I can buy some resist gear?  If not can I get any before I set off?

Yes, once you get there.

Also ask around in the first Goron area you come to and see what side quests crop up.

Hint if you do:

Always press A just after picking up a rock; this will immediately pick up any critter underneath it before it scuttles/flies/hops off. Also read what we say above about catching critters and fairies.

Also, you want fireproof/flame resistant, not just heat resistant (you want a little rounded red flame symbol, not an orange sun symbol; that's for the desert). You can buy some potions in the stable at the foot of the mountain if you don't have the right critters.

I wondered that, after I left the area. Ah, well; next time. Maybe it means that they opened the door to get at me?

One elixir to get to the first stop off. Collect lizards along the way. You'll work out the rest from there.

Although I'm trying to confirm what 2 piece vs 3 piece armour set gives. Resist vs completely proof? I.e. is the helm worth it?

Spoiler

In one of the memories, Zelda informs you they've found guardians buried deep under the castle, but they don't know why, or how, they're there.

Well, upgrading the cold armour set twice makes you immune to being frozen. I dunno, does upgrading the Goron set make you immune to fire damage? I can't recall any special effect for it.

Eventide Island was brilliant.

Spoiler

For some reason, I thought I could not use my powers there and I didn't even bother to try. But what a great time. It's the Breath of the Wild sandbox condensed in one island. So many great moments. I started by killing a few enemies with thrown rocks, then worked my way around the beach. Used the raft to bring the first ball to the shrine, changed the time of day at the campfire to go on a stealth kill spree in the camp and just when I was about to fight the Hinox, the Blood Moon appeared.  Fought the Hinox with a sword I picked up during a previous fight, buffed by the power banana dish I prepped, and managed to kill him. Brought the ball to the shrine near that enemy cooking place and used the Octoroc balloons to lift the slab off the third shrine. Didn't lose a life. It was tense and so much fun.

That's probably the last memory that I'm sneaking into the castle to locate - I'm not 100% sure it is the castle, but it looks a lot like it.

It's

Not in the castle. It's just outside, in Zelda's study

which is

Slightly southwest of the main castle bit. It's a tall but narrow tower.

In case you're stuck.

I used stasis and a tree branch :)

Cheers, @deKay; I'm basically scouting out all around the area to find it; didn't see it in the ruins around the castle, so am starting at the bottom of the castle environs and working up.

Both times I didn't get far - first time, through the Library and out, then fell back down a level.

For temperature you only need two of the three pieces of armour to be fully resistant. However if you are wearing all three pieces and have upgraded each piece twice at the fairies you will get a set bonus. I'm not sure what the flame armour one is though because I never went back to the Goron area after leaving. Maybe you can wade through lava or something.

Some armour set bonuses are worth it, others not so much. Maybe look at a wiki or guide before deciding whether you really need all three pieces of a particular set (although you do need all 3 stealth pieces to be at the highest possible stealth level). In many cases it may just be better wearing two and getting an additional buff from a different set entirely.

Off the top of my head stealth and cold resistant armour are well worth getting all three pieces upgraded twice.

Just climbed Akkala Tower in the citidel ruins. Found this, like other old battlegrounds, really moving; there's red carpet still on some of the stairway. I know there are no corpses around, but you can imagine thousands of people dying at the dotted around ruins.

There's a dude fighting a moblin near the bottom of this tower that gives you some back story. The mossed over cannons on one side are really morbid (pick up the rock by them btw..)

Climbed this with 9 hearts, in climbing gear, with three guardian arrows. Love being a stealthy little shit. The climbing ability just makes this game and map work so well.

Edit:

OMG!! There's something crawling all over the bloody volcano! Just clocked it through the binoculars, creepy as fuck.

I recently did that tower with 7 hearts and one stamina upgrade. I climbed up and avoided the flying guardians and, on my route up, I had exactly the right amount of stamina to do it such that twice, had I not that second reached a ledge, I would have fallen. I loved the little puzzle of actually accessing the tower proper from the ruins too.

Just one divine beast (Ruta) beasted so far and my first final boss fight with that was farcical. My only bow broke early doors and I ended up chucking everything I had at the boss instead of firing arrows. I got him down to a slither (eventually) too using my spear, boomerang, sword and kitchen sink chucking plan but the bastard got me right at the finish. I went away and tooled up and made real quick work of him second time round though ^_^
