The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I was thinking the other night that there will at some point be a fully accurate crowdsourced BotW Cookipedia. With Minecraft, folks always figured out how the various ingredients/recipes/buffs worked fairly quickly when new vegetables or monster parts got chucked into the game.

This game is like Minecraft in a lot of important and good ways, including the implicit assumption that you will never see all of it on your own. Godspeed Zelda Wiki sites.

Climbing Central Tower was fun. First time I went there I got slaughtered by guardians on Hyrule Field, so I approached from a different direction and it seemed like there were only two stationary guardians at the base. Easy! I killed the one on my side with hiding and arrows, and started climbing.

Except the ledges are placed exactly so that I have to go round the other side, and I didn't think guardian lasers would activate if I was way above them. They do. Had to quickly jump-climb, rinsing my stamina wheel, freaked out by that piano music, and I got sniped once, nearly dying. Got up there in the end.

Of course, this was a trap, set by devious game designers! "You took a shortcut and didn't kill the second guardian before climbing, you coward! Eat some guardian laser death!"

See, I kept a wall between me and the first, and managed to climb without being targeted. Parachuted down on the other side, whereupon the other guardian drew a bead. I managed to dodge by closing the 'chute as he fired, then reopening it. Cheesed it with no damage.

So, yeah, always another way.

Does anyone know where to find the Zora

woman who was swept away? Her husband asks you to find her. Mai, I think her name is. I've been all the way down the river as far as the castle.

If you speak to him (or possibly his son) again, he suggests another potential place, which I've never even visited, so I'm keeping that quest on the back burner...

Yeah, the soundtrack is excellent. Lots of space and silences, beautiful sounds and musical stabs. Plus, when the rip-roaring melodies do come in, they mean more. The people complaining probably have no taste. Reminds me of people complaining about Wind Waker's visual style (not on this forum, but elsewhere), because it wasn't "realistic", instead of enjoying it for what it was.

Oh, hell, yes.

I absolutely love exploring the snowfields, because there the game goes almost silent; just the crunch of your feet and the sound of your breath. Absolutely sublime use of sound; so restrained.

Can't say the same for the VA, unfortunately.

It's interesting that quite a few people (on other forums) are complaining about the music in this (or 'music', as many write it, such is their disdain/opinion of how BotW's soundtrack is lacking in what music being music consist of.) As I play on I'm actually finding this soundtrack to be my favourite in any Zelda for a while. At least in terms of instrumentation and sonic quality, it is a big step up from what has come before, with some beautiful orchestrations, subtle and interesting electronics and really sensitive playing. Sure, it is usually very much more minimal in nature than any previous entry, but that doesn't mean it isn't rich in a different way (and just because music doesn't have some bold 'dum-de-dum' lead using a narrow criteria of 'acceptable' notes doesn't mean it isn't melodic!) I'm so glad Nintendo were a bit daring with how they approached the sound and music in this - it works fantastically. And it does have its louder, more thematic, epic key moments, all of which are quite interesting compositionally from my perspective. It's also so good hearing a real orchestra utilised to a greater extent (Super Mario Galaxy had already whetted

my appetite for this...)

The music quality in Skyward Sword is incredible and BotW is most certainly not a big step up.

BotW has some fine music and great audio but it lacks in many areas. It can't have a consistent music all the time perhaps but I felt it needed more during certain areas. Hence why the castle is so epic.

It is a bit disappointing but what could they have put there that some wily player wouldn't have found a way past? I'd rather have it that way than have my freedom curtailed in any other aspect of the game.

An endless ocean maybe? Or a cliff edge with a void below it? Something magical? Anything must be better than literally not being able to go another step forward on a flat surface?

I think they should just have pulled a Wind Waker and had ridiculous storms and winds at each edge of the map that would blow you back 50 feet every time you get near or something. Of course players could still try to get past the storms but you could still put an invisible wall within them just in case someone glitched it.

Yeah, or that.

Edit:

Just had a thought. Re-visit great fairies periodically (in stealth) to capture tiddly fairies for good backup.

Why in stealth? They appear just normally, and you can just grab them same as fireflies. It's only if you run you scare them off.

I never knew you could collect the fairies around the fountains.

50 hours in now and just 1 beast completed.  I've spent the last few days trying to mop up all the Zora quests before I move on to my next Beast so haven't moved the story on at all.  I've got the full Zora armour set now and upgraded it once, along with the stealth & climbing sets.  I want some heat & cold resist armour but not come across any so far.

I'm in this weird place where I suddenly am reluctant to go and uncover the remaining parts of the map as once I do I'll have seen it all.  It feels like there must be loads left to do in the areas I have unlocked but barely explored but I'm struggling to find quests there.  I've done 40 shrines now and I'm already feeling like I'm coming across far fewer on my travels although I suppose this will change when I open up the rest of the map.  Basically I'm loving it and don't want it to end!

Also, aside from Kakariko, Hateno and the various Beast bases like Zora/Gerudo/Rito/Goron towns is there another village out there? Which region of the map?

Ah, did not know they stuck around if you walked. However I'm useless with joysticks; such a heavy thumb. Seriously, watching me aim a bow and arrow is painful.

Do you get a maximum of 20 armour slots? Anywhere to store the armour you already have if so? (I have weapon plaques in my house but no option for a mannequin?)

How can you check on the Wii U how many hours you've logged?

The only way you should be doing this is to KILL THEM ALL. Like a Hero. And hiding behind walls while taking potshots to do so definitely counts as heroic.

Yeah, but run is on a button  Saying that, I'm pretty sure I've always scared them off when not sneaking up in some way. Reminds me, I need to go back as I've run out, and I've only found one fountain so far - might have to go the way I think I'm actually supposed to to find more.

I think that that the game already features mechanics that solve this problem. Swimming and climbing both use stamina, so all you need is a wall with no ledges that's too high to climb, or a stretch of water with no islands that's too wide to swim across. If you look past the desert you can see the sea, which would serve as a good edge, just like an unusually high wall would.

South East, check out the coast.

There's no limit on armour storage. On Wii U, close the game and open the activity log app to check play times.

If you had the full quota of stamina potions then the wall would have to be incredibly high though. And you can use cryonis to cross any body of water if you're patient enough.

I didn't realise the boundary was on solid ground though! All the ones I've seen have been marked with abysses or the sea stretching off to nowhere so at least you can see you're not supposed to go that way.

No, I mean just don't run. i.e. just don't press the run button. Push the stick all you want!

Sprint is a button but running is just the stick?

:omg:

So, whilst getting to Eldin tower I may have just killed a guardian by scaling a large rock out of sight, creeping over the top and shooting it in the eye with a bomb arrow, and then while it was disabled shield surfed down towards it wielding a guardian axe.....and subsequently chopped its legs off and disembowled it

Yeah that's true. Maybe a high rock surface that narrowed into points that has water flowing down them so the were too slick to climb, or overhangs to prevent further climbing? Or a storm in the sea that destroys your ice blocks? Just something that feels like it's part of the world.

Finding a wall it told me I couldn't climb was annoying. Finding an invisible wall when I swam too far out to sea was annoying. But just running into one whilst heading for what looked like another big area of sandy desert with nothing between me and it was shit.

Just had a wonderful little moment. I had an intense Guardian session last night, taking out as many as I could around the Hyrule area to harvest parts. This morning I warped to Central Tower to pick off a few more, which coincided with morning in the game.

I parachuted down onto the ground to find I'd taken all of them out already. Rather than flashing lasers and alarms, I heard nothing. Just the wind blowing the grass, and the odd piano note. Beautiful.

I walked around a little more, and toward the castle. Again, silence. Some birds flying over and chirping, and stalks flying away as I ran through the grass. The piano marking the beginning of a new day, and the aftermath of last night's carnage.

Then, in the distance, I saw movement, and a distinct blue light. A Guardian. Waddling around pathetically in the open space.

I ran over and pulled out my shield as the familiar alarm began sounding. BAM. Parry. BAM. Second Parry. BAM. Missed that one. It knocked me to the ground burned the grass around me, but the laser kept its focus. I stood up just in time before the fourth shot. BAM.

I got it.

After that, it was silent once more.

Depends - like all critters, if you don't sneak, some will spot you and head off. Sometimes you can then sprint and catch them even then, but fairies head up and out of reach.

I find it much more reliable if I sneak up to them to catch them - I have definitely lost fairies by walking up to them. YMMV. Maybe you can walk up behind them reliably (i.e. in the same direction they're drifting in).

The stealth suit solves all these issues which is why it's the GOAT. I feel like I've lost a limb when I have to switch to another one in the cold/hot areas. Also increased running speed at night is one of the best full suit perks.
