The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I did my first Divine Beast today with around 20 hours on the clock. Haven't had much of a change to play Zelda since I got it, but when I do, it's excellent! Not sure where to go next, I guess I'll mop up some side quests and talk to Impa.

I decided to add some stamina to my wheel. A little disappointed by the amount you get per-upgrade!!!

Today I finally lit up all the towers, beat my first divine beast and did a dozen or so shrines. I'm exhausted.

I'm trying to find Spainkillers guide to Parrying Guardian's with your shield... cant seem to see it...

My timing kinda sucks at this - be great to see a detailed breakdown on how to do it...

EDIT: Found it! :)

Parry just slightly after the eye turns blue. It's pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Rarely have my shields destroyed by them now.

Today's highlights:

- defeated my first Major Strength test, which was surprisingly easy, although I used up a good few weapons.

- feeling pretty good, I took on & killed my first Lynel as well. Took no hits, kicked his arse with one of the weapons I got from the Strength shrine. Pretty good loot too, if the rest of them are as easy, it's time to hunt them down as I'd avoided them up till now.

- ascended Mt Lanryu, freed the ...., which was a great bit of gaming.

- and finally, saw a shooting star across the valley from the top of the mountain, managed to make it with what seemed like seconds to spare & get my first star fragment.

40+ hours and finally did my first Divine beast. Had to use my guide as I'd missed a trick early on

Spoiler

Putting the ice under the door which gave me jumbo controls. I'd actually missed the main controls down the stairs and thought that door was the final terminal, hence locked:)

and was stumped. Found it very tricky to figure out. I reckon I'll still be playing for months at this rate, it's absolutely stellar gaming.

So I managed to pick a Switch up today. So far so lovely. I've played through the first bit of this this evening. Must admit so far it's pretty underwhelming, especially compared to Horizon which has been absorbing me for the last week or so. I dunno, it just feels a bit ponderous and dated. I'm hoping things will improve now it's opening up a bit.

The Switch itself is nice though. It's so tiny!!

On the first page alone there's already 6 things which I can't wait to try out for myself. Can anyone tell me what #28 means though?

Yep. Definitely blew my mind, that did.

I played Horizon for three days,  probably fifteen hours worth at least,  the weekend the Switch was released as I'd picked it up as consolation to myself given that my Switch order had been delayed till Monday. I  have zero interest in going back to it  as Zelda has made that and,  indeed,  all open world games look dull and uninspired in every respect. I find something new and wondrous pretty much every time I play and that's after I dread to think how many hours...

That said,  the big dinosaur fights in horizon were ace,  it's just the rest I can't summon any enthusiasm to go back to.

I can understand your sarcasm but I can't think of another game that has this. Same with sheltering from rain/lightning, it's all very well done

The best thing is that it feels totally natural too, like you expect it to work and it does.

I welcome it also but I suppose I can understand the nostalgic feeling that a true dungeon may bring so could be missed.  There's nothing from previous Zelda games though from within the dungeons, perhaps other than the bosses and select enemies, that really stand out to me in the same way as some of the exploration and story points do as part of my memories.

The way that Zelda appeals to different people in different ways amazes me. The dungeons were usually the  highlight for me. So many in Link to the Past - Tower of Hera, Blind's Hideout, the Ice Palace, Turtle Rock. Eagle's Tower in Links Awakening - you take out an entire floor! Twisting Ocarina's Forest Temple or finally working out the Water Temple. Even Majora's which wasn't particularly dungeon heavy, had the Stone Temple where you flip things about. And so on. As amazing as BoTW is, if you loved dungeons you'll feel there loss a bit.

The lead up stuff is straight out of Skyward Sword - there were a lot of puzzles pre-dungeon in it. There are a lot of ideas from Skyward that get properly fleshed out here. I wonder if the Wii had less technical limitations if SS would have ended up more.of a hybrid between this and previous Zelda's.

After my early success, I bumped into a Blue Maned Lynel on my trek across Akkala. Took one hit, which was all my own fault, other than that another pretty smooth fight.

Minutes later, I saw another one in the distance but this turned out to be one Lynel too far! Turns out that a Lynel with a spear is an entirely different prospect altogether, you can't bait them into their bread & butter combo which makes life much harder.

Made a note on the map, I'll be back for him later.

Also so found the furnace for Akkala but I have no bloody torches! No idea where I can buy one from either, grrr.

Ended my my evening session by boarding Van Medoh, not a tricky sequence but very nicely done.

Agree - maybe part of Zeldas massive appeal is that there is something for most people in there in varying doses.

It's not that I don't like the dungeons from older games. I've completed OoT, MM, Minish Cap, Link Between Worlds and Wind Waker. I think that's it. Of those games though I only remember dungeon bits from OoT and something vague from MM! OoT had some super memorable moments but it was my first proper Zelda as I had a Mega Drive for the most part growing up. There's bits I remember well from OoT's dungeons; Jabu Jabu for being weird and slightly gross, Forest Temple's upside down bits, those shadow hands from the shadow temple, all that water. etc. I can't say they jumped out to me though as things I really really liked. Not that I disliked them, I just enjoyed the other stuff more.

But then I suppose on some level I found them a little... stressful? Ha that sounds so lame. Like in the build up you know the dungeon bit is coming, and what if it's hard, what if I die, what if I struggle, what if I can't figure it out and I'm there for hours and hours and .... I say all this as a somewhat intelligent person but one who doesn't like doing things wrong!

In reality it was all unfounded because Zelda games have always looked after the player and have never punished you for trying. I suppose it's a testament to the design of the games and the dungeons themselves that I may feel that mini anxiety about them, indeed that's sort of the point in the context of the stories, eh? Met my first Lynel and he's a fucker. Can't beat him!

If he's got a sword, close the distance quickly, he should do a three swipe combo.

Backflip the first one, then back flip the second one & if you've timed it right, you should get the flurry option. After the flurry, he should do the combo again, so you can repeat it.

Eventually he'll back off, then either flames which you can just circle away from or he'll charge, dodge this & if you've timed it right, you can get a flurry from this too.

If he's got a spear, errr, run!!

You can use a weapon or leaf. Just a tip but as soon as you light one of the torches on the way there, put out the one in your hands (slash it about) then relight it. Doesnt wear down then.

You don't need torches. A tree branch (cut down any small tree) or a primed arrow will work.

25 hours in and I've only just made it to Zora's Domain and I've only got four hearts, I've spent most of my upgrades on stamina. Im going to be playing the game until Christmas because I find it hard to marathon games and have just been dipping into Zelda for an hour or so to get to a tower or finish a sub quest.

Started this for an hour session earlier and ended up playing it all day again. The way all the systems interact just make feel so much more alive than other open world games - the weather, the animals running around you, birds in a V shaped flock casting shadows overhead, characters walking around in their little clockwork routines, enemies on the lookout, the faint glow of something unusual off in the distance. Backed up with ambiant sounds and just enough music.

Break it all down and all of those systems are pretty simple. Bestheda would have invested a shedload of development time into making a comes subsystem and making you get to level 30 before you can make anything useful. Nintendo just perfect red simple rules and focused all the time on the interactions, placement and making the world feel rock solid. I've no idea how they made it all work.

I'm planning to get a Switch for MK8 Deluxe, but given the constant praise I'm hearing about this on here and elsewhere, I may end up getting this too.

- I've not played a Zelda game since Ocarina (my only ever Zelda game). I loved it, but for some reason later Zelda games never appealed to me.

- I loved Oblivion and Skyrim, but never finished either of them as they were so big I gave up after 100 hours (most of which was side quests) when other things started demanding my time.

- I tried to like The Witcher 3, but didn't enjoy the combat and wasn't remotely grabbed by the story or characters, leading me to give up not long after the Baron and some freaky Welsh Witches. I may have got to Novigrad(?).

- I've just spent 60 hours utterly engrossed in Horizon Zero Dawn.

Am I likely to like this? Is it so big it's overwhelming?

It's as big as you want it to be. Strictly following the main quest (good luck with that...) will probably see you done in 40-50 hours, people like me who don't want it to end will probably thoroughly explore everywhere without a guide and rack up something like 150-170 hours, maybe more, I don't know.

Based on this - it's going to be your game of the forever
