The fight must have taken 15-20 minutes as I gradually wore him down while staying out of the way of the hurt. Surprise surprise I used all my fancy arrows and burned through about 3 swords but it was so nice to get it done. Ok, I decide to just nip down to the beach, have a word, then straight back to the village with absolutely no getting sidetracked. I wondered why the thunderstorm wasn't letting up... It wasn't exactly a huge challenge, but I had to scratch my head long enough to feel pleased. Cleared up what was left to do at Kakariko village then headed out not really sure what I was going to do next.........only to be met with a Guardian hurtling across the landscape towards me. Proper shit it and legged it away as fast I could up a hill. Just as it was closing in on me I managed to fling myself off the edge of a sheer drop, opened the glider and drifted to safety, looking back at the annoying prick with a big smile on my face. As I was gliding down I noticed I was heading towards a shrine. Awesome! Touched down to be met with an incidental character that I wasn't expecting at all. I decided to wind them up to see what would happen. I really wasn't expecting their reaction! Nice little touch that. Classic Nintendo! So off into the shrine I go, to find a really clever puzzle that's up there with anything in Ocarina or Majora. No handholding, no annoying hints, no signposting. Exactly as it should be! Fucking heaven especially with most of the bullshit you get in games these days to cater to Dave Casual. 30mins later I emerge back outside after a fair bit of experimentation and head scratching, with some cool new gear, a genuine sense of satisfaction and reward and another big smile on my face. Oooooooh yeah! What now? How about one of those towers in the distance? Yeah man! I try not to get distracted on the journey there but it's almost impossible not to be. There's so much intriguing looking stuff "just over the next hill", it's hard to resist. After an hour I realise I'm miles off track and suddenly remember I was supposed to be heading to a tower.......only I can't even see it anymore! I suddenly hear the sound of a classic Zelda theme playing in the distance. I go to investigate. Talk to a character and trigger a cutscene. The main Zelda theme kicks in.........and the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. Forgot just how fucking awesome the music is in these games even though I often find myself humming half the tunes on a daily basis! A few more top notch puzzle shrines fall and then I begin to head back......discovering the shield surfing dudes. I'm having some of this! Off I go to the biggest nearby mountain and surf my way down it......again, big smile on my face. I reach the bottom, and there it is! Been that in the zone I'd not noticed the tower I was originally heading towards. I arrive at the bottom of it to find it heavily guarded. The game lets me choose how I want to tackle it, again no hand holding, no annoying tutorial bollocks.......just crack on with it. Do I sneak past the enemies, stealth kill them, use the environment or go in head on and show them who's boss? I opt for a mix of all of them. Why not? As I smash the last Bokoblin sky high off the side of the mountain and finally begin to climb the tower, hours after I started out on my journey, I realise I'm grinning like an idiot again. As I get to the top and I'm met with a spectacular view across the game world it suddenly dawns on me. This is not an attempt to create an ultra realistic, accurately modelled real world city. It's not relying on mega graffix to temporarily distract you from a largely empty world. I'm not being given the same thinly disguised walking simulator based fetch quest over and over that most other open world games throw at you. This is a place that somehow feels believable and entirely consistent. It feels alive and natural and there's.......I don't know......a kind of solidity to it all? It's the kind of shit Nintendo brought to the table with Ocarina when most other game worlds at the time felt flimsy and like they were built from cornflake packets. It's just, well, proper ace! Its also not treating the player like they're technically brain dead. It's putting faith in them, to just get on with stuff and figure things out for themselves. Finally! Thank you Nintendo! This is what games should be doing, not catering to numb nuts that struggle to even hold a fucking joypad. So yeah, finished up the session having a nice ridge walk! Hahaha. Just strolled along the tops taking in the view and watching the sunset over the horizon and the rain drifting down over the distant mountains. In fact I can't think of any that do. It's about creating a consistent experience without holes and without triggers that draw you out of the illusion. Mario 64 is a perfect example as is this. It's an incredible thing to play for hours without having constant mistakes or reminders that you're playing something that's been designed and to be finding flaws all the time. For me if I do get stuck (which I do) and that frustrated I know I can look a thing up, that's been true since back in the Ocarina days, too. So I'm not sure where Games decided they need to do all the ridiculous signposting and handholding.Ghost Recon Wildlands arrived for me on its release day a few days after Zelda came out. I took it back after a couple of days as aside from causing me motion sickness, it all felt so "paint by numbers" in comparison. I was hoop jumping. Collecting things Just Because. Because it was an artificially crafted way to pad out the game. In comparison to Zelda, where you pad your own game as you feel like it, it felt so false!Games are now officially ruined for me so I have re-committed to Nintendo 100%. I've stopped taking good care of myself, don't even have any shields at this point and my outfit is mainly worn because I look rad in it. Link has three day old stubble and a beer gut. I need to take a good hard look at my ZeldaLife, it's time to man up, go to the desert and take on that beast. No more exporing, no more side quests, no more dying my clothes and displaying my weapons. Lazor focus time! Que montage and 80s music. YOU'RE THE BEST! AROUND! I'm just gonna go and take a picture of that horseman thing first...and there is an old shrine with a treasure chest in it I didn't open at the time. Probably should cook up some foods, grap a pot lid for a shield and buy some arrows, hmmm think I need to go mine some gems to top up my wallet too. But then it's straight into the desert to try and remember what it was I was meant to be doing there. Meant to be searching for somebody I think. I realised it had gone a bit too far when my girlfriend walked into the living room at 2am and asked what I was doing. "I'm standing on a mountain top waiting for a shooting star." "How long have you been doing that?" "Two hours." "How many have you seen?" "None." She just rolled her eyes and went back to bed. So I woke up this morning finished off the ramaining beast I had, and smashed Gannon's stupid fucking face in. Still got loads to do (about half the shrines, that island thing I've heard about, any of the bosses in the wild) but for now at least the curse has now been lifted from my soul. I've been doing this since I saw the second one drop and leave a marker - as I thought the first one was just a weather anomaly. I figured they were rare AF so are worth the effort. It's worth it though This morning I just went exploring and happened across a bear minding his own business up on top of a mountain so I did the only thing you should do when you meet a bear - I fed him some honey and did this. Then I did some cooking in my Barbarian pants. jon_cybernet Posted March 25, 2017 Share Posted March 25, 2017 @cassidy They have a really low drop rate, but I got two from the same guardian in the guardian graveyard beneath the labyrinth in the top right hand of the map. Think there are also a couple in shrine chests. Other than that, the best thing you can do is get a bunch of ancient arrows and then farm guardians by the castle. Only bother with the walkers though. Save before you take one on, kill, then reload if it doesn't drop. It may take a while, but you only need 6. I tended to do do a big loop around the castle, then the graveyard under the labyrinth, making sure I got at least an ancient core or a giant core from each guardian, then I'd go off and do something else until the next blood moon, which broke it up a bit and stopped it getting too tedious.
