The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

I watched a Wind Waker video review the other night and I'd completely forgotten you could pick up enemies' weapons and use/throw them. It was totally underused in that game, and now suddenly it's the backbone of the combat in this one. Same with Skyward Sword's stamina bar and shield degradation.

All three of WW, TP and SS now kinda just feel like dry runs for Breath of the Wild.

Found an amazing little spot earlier whilst being sidetracked up a mountain. Lovely large pond with five korok seeds, durians, honey, apples and more dotted around it. A right little oasis. :)

Spoiler

Halfway up Satori mountain if interested.

I'm so fucking glad that I got a job this week, two weeks after Zelda. I would've wanted to cry if I'd had a job when a game this good came out

After having no work this year I called in for a job  last week and my very first thought was 'fuck!'

:o Holy absolute fuck, I just did my favourite bit so far. After re-reading a fairly innocuous looking entry in my quest log, I scoffed my only decent spicy dish and headed up Mount Lanayru.

Spoiler

Oh my word, that dragon. Once I'd cottoned on to what I had to do, the time pressure of only having so much cold resistance left made it feel super intense. The way the fight unfolds down the side of the mountain, using the bullet time when firing arrows from the paraglider, catching the updrafts... absolute poetry in motion. I wonder how hard others found it, but it felt like a real achievement to take it down - no, to free the beautiful mountain spirit from corruption - on the first go. Shadow of the Colossus eat your heart out.

Then down in the bay, I'm solving a secret shrine puzzle with my new accordion buddy, and Nayru's just there in the background, scooting around the base of the mountain, happy and free. :)

This is the best game ever.

Next order of business is getting back to Hestu. I do think his final location could be a bit better signposted seeing as inventory slots are so useful, maybe with a quest that drops a marker. It's the one thing I've allowed myself to Google thus far.

Ah, phooey; turns out they're common as anything. I can even bloody rent one. Thought I had found something unusual!

Still, it was cool stumbling on this on my own; real sense of achievement.

Holy shit. Anyone else found the Giant Horse?

Just found him as part of a side quest. He's about twice the size of a normal horsey. Took a photo. But I couldn't leave it there. So I stalked him, mounted him, eventually tamed him (with a few stamina boosts mid-rodeo). Got him back to a stable, maxed out our bond, got him registered and saddled, and named him Hercules.

Wish I could include the photo, he's ridiculously enormous. Has modest speed, but infinite stamina. He's an epic monster-crushing beast.

Yes I found him but didn't have enough stamina to tame him. I might have marked him on the map to go back to but that was probably about 25 game hours ago and if I did, I've no idea what marker I used. Hmmmm.

Stray observations because I love talking about this game:

  • Twice so far I've found a Lynel living just round the corner from a Hinox. Are they mates? That'd be a fun sitcom.
  • I'm trying to save up for things, but I just spend all my money on arrows. All kinds of arrows. I bloody love sniping enemies and hunting.
  • I keep dropping rocks on Koroks' heads by accident, and they say "Ouch" and I feel bad.
  • I've only tamed one fairly slow horse (who's lovely), so I should explore that a bit more. Some of the horse stuff I've seen and read about is insane, but there's just so much else I need to do!
  • Finding and upgrading the clothes is incredibly satisfying. I'm determined to get myself a full wardrobe of top-drawer gear.
  • Oh god, I want to 100% this, don't I? I'm gonna avoid guides for as long as possible, and that seems like it'll be a beautifully long time, but still. I'm in this for the long haul.
  • Not being afraid of Guardians anymore is such a game-changer, thanks to that legendary @Spainkiller post. Feels so badass. I'm gonna try out @NickC's tactic once I upgrade my Stasis too.

Synchronicity! I love that the rhythm of the game means lots of us are discovering things around the same time. It's like there's waves who can all discuss certain bits together: first come the journos, then folks with some free time, then us 9-to-5ers, then maybe parents of two...

Also, it's incredible how your exploration tends to be based on a combination of bravery, preparedness and experience, rather than just whether you've unlocked a particular item. With that spoiler in my post above, I could technically have done that almost immediately after getting down from the plateau. It was just a case of hearing a rumour from a villager, having the gear to make it feasible (with a bit of knowledge from the last few pages in this thread), and just deciding to see what happens.

I did it like a week ago. Took me ages and a shit tonne of arrows as I didn't realise you could paraglide-slow motion cheese it. I did it for realises. You guys all suck.

:P

The thing is, you've probably breezed some shrine that took me ages, or you've decimated a Bokoblin camp better than I have. Whatever the task there's a host of ways to do it. This game, man.

I did that a while back. I've got to do another one now for something else though and I have only a slight idea where to go... It's not worth the huge trek in case I'm wrong. It's not really a huge trek thanks to fast travel, but it's in an area I've not explored yet - so that means lots of side tracking. But the side tracking is great anyway, so fuck it, I might do that next.

tl:dr Doing anything in this game is a fantastic experience. Literally nothing is ever a waste of time or effort.

Interesting, see I found him ages as part of the side quest ago but don't think I have enough stamina. I've got two full circles but can't even tame a normal full colour horse (if that makes sense). I think i might be using my stamina wrong as I just spam it currently when I get on.

In other news, I went back and did the two tests of strength and smashed those guardians to bits, very satisfying and then just completed Eventide Island. I didn't realise you could leave and come back to where you'd got to (if that makes sense). I thought it was a full reset every time. I'd done two and messed up the final one so left and came back to find I just needed to redo that so all good.

Then revived a few of my dead equine friends, added some strength and on the off chance popped back in to the Lost Woods to try for you know what and...I got it! :omg:  Excited is not the word.

Onward... :)

Just checked and I'm 45 hours in, only done one beastie and plenty of towers to climb. Just tried to go up the volcano... didn't end well.

Lost all my wooden shields

and then had to take on a guardian. Good times.

I've spoilered a part of your post that you shoud really spoiler as I didn't even think that would happen - it seems logical but we all know videogames don't often follow logical real world reality but this game does.

Lynel get :) I was proper happy to defeat my first one. I found one that wasn't actually that difficult using

Stasis - I keep forgetting it works on my enemies now I've +'d it and ice arrows

just before I'd halved its health bar, it started to rain and then came the lightning :( I had to keep

equipping and removing and dodging and hiding so it took a long time - probably 20 minutes but I was determined to slay it

.

After that epic battle, I went mining for gems and managed, in just an hour to accumulate around 5,000 rupees worth so I went off and sold them and then cooked up a load of food and then it was bedtime. I'm determined to find a way up the Death Mountain region tomorrow as every time, I've failed.

Also found a really cool shrine in SW Geruda that's near something really interesting. It was excellent and each part of it got progressively more difficult. The end part had me very perplexed but experimenting with things led to me haphazardly figuring it out. Loved it. I have two full circles of stamina now; people are asking about what to get, stamina or hearts - I'd go for stamina first - once you learn the art of cooking up added affect foods, you won't need that many hearts to begin with but there's nothing more frustrating than climbing something and getting near the top and then running out of puff :)
