It seems like there's a bit of confusion about temperatures and heat/cold resistant elixirs and meals.

With temperatures there are two different levels of heat and two different levels of cold. The snow area in the Plateau is level one for example, while some of the snowy areas in the rest of the map are level two. It broadly depends on how high up you get I think. You can check using the temperature gauge, but also if Link is still shivering or drowsy on the inventory screen or losing health you can figure it out easy enough.

Similarly, you can cook stuff which has either low or high level temperature resistance. If you eat low level resistant food but go into a cold area which is level 2 then you'll continue to lose health. However, you can supplement the low level food by putting on a single piece of temperature resistant armour. If you want to go into the level 2 areas without worrying about food at all you will need 2 pieces of the relevant temperature resistant armour. Or you can cook a high level temperature meal and continue to wear normal clothes.

I've probably made that sound more complicated than it really is to be honest

Also, something else to bear in mind, when you are in really hot areas, you can equip ice weapons to cool you down, and in cold areas, you can equip fire weapons to warm you up.

I've run out of meal slots too, but mainly because I really enjoy the cooking part of this. It's very relaxing, and also satisfying when you hear the little glockenspiel noise when you've (usually accidentally in my case) cooked up something good.

Hmm-hmmmm, hmm-hmm-hmm… ha ha!

There's also a difference between heat-resistance and fire-resistance when you head up Death Mountain. Past checkpoint two, you're gonna need to be fireproof, which I think can only be got from an elixir and not a meal.

Or from different gear...

Does anyone else find the Shrines too easy in general? (Other than the combat orientated ones, I mean.)

The combat ones are only as difficult as you make them.  I died on Minor Test the first time, then did Moderarte 3rd time as I was determined, but learnt the combat patterns and managed Major without loosing a heart, and using only bombs and, in the 2nd half, a sword whilst  dodging the laser (it took a while though..!)

I read a Polygon article about good ways to build yourself up at the beginning of the game and they called Zora's Domain out as being somewhere to go and collect arrows.  They also called out cooking & selling meat as a way to grind out cash as you could get 150 rupees for each cooked meal.

I found that cash grinding is best done with meals too.  Plenty out there, and 150 isn't too shabby.  I fear selling an item then needing to find another later ;)

How did you guys play this in the early stages?  I'm very early on but seem to have no quest that's do-able, either because I'm currently way underpowered or don't have he right equipment to get to certain places.

i know I'm in the minority but the lack of any handholding whatsoever is causing me issues.

Explore.  Climb, mark Shrine, go to Shrine, repeat.

I didn't know you can run out of slots for food.  I've got tons of meals and haven't run out.

What it is not limited inventory like for weapons? Does that go for the ingredients too? So I have been micro managing my inventory to no use?

You get 3 pages of meals.  Things that are heated on a fire,

Spoiler

or the ground at death mountain

but not meals multiply up - nuts, roasted apples, fish etc.

Worth noting also that food effects don't stack.  Someone tells you this at some point in the game.  I read it and didn't really think about it, until I needed to be heat resistant, and also was running low on hearts, but only had meals that would give me cold resistance, or speed, or attack etc.  So there is more depth in the inventory than I first considered.

I didn't realise that the gear also stacks, so did the Death Mountain Divine Beast with top armour + elixir, assuming that was what was required.  There is a small bar that shows how the gear is stacking up on the selection screen.

Master Sword GET

lovely little cut-scene to go with it as well.

That's me about 70 hours in.  I've only completed 2 divine beasts and explored half the map.  Still got 3 areas to open up.

I don't want this game to end.

Ok, so there is a limit on the amount of food you can have, I knew there would obviously be a limit because you can only fit so many dots under the icon but thought it might be more. My question would be, why have you all got such a big stockpile of food? You don't need that much. I generally only have the one page of food, use what I need then cook up more when I come across a pot. I only now have 3 pages because I decided to cook as much shit as I could be arsed to, rather than any need. Surely you can't need more than 60 food items!

In saying that, I have only used heat/cold resistance food, health and extra heart foods. Heat/cold food is no longer required so I just eat for sustenance! Extra stamina, speed, attack, defence, electric resistance, etc. I've never used and therefore never cook.

I cook food to sell as well so it's not uncommon that I fill my slots with stuff I'm planning to sell - it's a small inconvenience to then need to go sell to make space and return to the cooking pot.

In answer to your main question though, I've cooked a lot of different things because I don't know what I will encounter when I go out Adventuring.  Will I need ++ hearts?  Will I want ++ stamina if I get stuck near the top of a cliff but can't quite make it to the top?  Perhaps ++stealth will be handy for a quest, or for stalking some rare beastie.  I may get caught out by some bastards with lightning weapons when lightning resistance is rather handy.

The thing about this game is that you don't necessarily know what you will need until you need it...!

How do you see play time length, or do you need to have switched on a parental control thingy before starting?

It's on your Switch profile... I'm assuming it includes playtime that was built up before they enabled that feature 10 days after release?

Parental app shows hours per day (but not for individual games).

Viewing your profile on the Switch shows per game but only approximately "you've played over 20 hours" or something

In 5 hour increments.

You can also blow the rotors off the flying Guardians - I noticed one that I had been flinging bomb arrows at was dangling from one nacelle. Blew that one off, and it ended up crashed on its side - still active, but only dangerous from two directions!

Stasis doesn't seem to last as long on Guardians as it does on, say, big rocks...

I dunno - I only tried stasis on the flying guy, when stood on a rocky outcrop, and couldn't quite reach it (my original idea was to try just that, because I had just run out of Ancient arrows on his two partners).

Stasis didn't really last long enough for me to shoot many arrows at it.

I'm really not looking forward to finishing this. I've put off the 4th Divine beast for about 30 hours now, and i still dont want to go and attempt it. What other game is going to compare to this, now?

That is my only criticism of this game.... its going to make all other games feel lacklustre.
