I spent my entire 45 minute train ride home trying to get a blue flame from one place to another via a chain of lanterns.

All started well until I ran out of wooden things to carry the flame with. Then when I found something it fucking rained for ages before stopping. I then tried to ride the flame in on my horse but overshot on my first attempt and my club disintegrated before I could get back.

Second attempt I got there and tried to jump off the horse to light the lantern but that button puts your torch away extinguishing the flame.

Third attempt it started raining so had to wait that out again before finally completing it on the 4th attempt.

Hah, did you miss my lengthy rant about precisely the same thing up thread? I feel your pain, man.

which one? I've fond 3 of them so far and none have asked that high.

Whichever one you find fourth will ask for that much I think? 100, 500, 1000, 10000.

there's always something.. everything is so brilliantly designed to draw you and make you want to explore.  I found a shrine that was tucked away... I found it using a really COOL environmental thing I'd never noticed before

flocking birds!

and the chests in that shrine yielded some obvious clobbering type weapons... when I came out of the shrine, directly in front of me and across a gully, was a bunch of sweet ore that yielded sapphires and rubies and I smashed them up using the weapons I 'won' in the shrine.  It was obviously designed to do that.

Re. that 'carry the blue flame' task at Akkala that was discussed a few pages back. I loved that. I spent ages clearing the area of Moblins, then figured out I could light a torch while on horseback. Just as I was getting back to the lab is started raining and extinguished my flame. So I headed down to the stable to get a bed to wait it out. But then while I was asleep the blood moon happened and all the Moblins were back! FFS. This time, however, I pwned them in no time, transported the flame via horse again, except I forgot that the stationary guardian near the lab had also reapawned. Dodging that caused the flame to go out, so back I went....

I think that kind of thing would be annoying in most other games, but because of the different ways things can play out there was never a dull moment.

Can anyone help me with the first new town task?

Trying to track down a Goron who's name ends in 'son' feel like I've spoken to every bloody Goron in Hyrule, can anybody tell me where he is? :(

I loved that quest... always trying to make the next to the next lantern.  There's some handy woods up that I used to sneak through to avoid the guardian.

Why did you try to light the lanterns though? Just as a 'checkpoint' so you didn't have to backtrack as far? I just rode the flame all the way from source to destination.

I didn't pick up the torch before I started so was using clubs off the killed moblins to carry the flame so yeah, I was using the lanterns as the club would burn out after a few minutes.

I did it in both the original village and Akkala - in fact I went around lighting all the lanterns I could find in both locations, in case something interesting happened.

It hasn't, yet - but maybe I missed one. If you do this at Akkala, it leads you around the back of the hill near the main source, to a skull cave with treasure, but I don't know if that's all it does.

In both places, there's someone who talks wistfully about having the blue lanterns lit, so I took it as a cryptic hint that I should. Maybe it's just another ruse to get you to head up to the research centre.

I now have a torch with extra endurance, filched from a blue-flame challenge shrine, which apparently does not go out...

The Twighlight Princess Wolf Amiibo. Does that unlock the Wolf on the Switch version immediately? I don't have the game, a Wii U or any save file.

Same for Epona amiibo.

And can I find either of these in the game without dropping £50 on some plastic figures

Yes. Without a save file the wolf will only have 3 hearts. Epona is just with the Smash Bros Link Amiibo and is awesome, by far the best horse available.

Yes

And

No :(

(Having said that, I got the wolf amiibo from Nintendo a week or so ago for 10.99 and got the smash bros link amiibo from Amazon.fr for £17... And then i checked my head and stopped looking for them cos toon link is far too expensive and i just cant... Not that much, no...)

Presumably you need to activate the amiibo each day for the wolf (and Epona), to stop me selling them as soon as I've used them?

Wolf yes, Epona, presumably not given you can store horses in the stables.

Epona just needs to be scanned once and can be stored in stables. You can then scan the amiibo every day after to receive some goodies and a chest.

Just keep in mind that once you have Epona it makes the other horses pointless, you don't need to train or treat her right

Yeah... somewhere to go back to. I'd light the lantern and then go and batter some basts, then go back to the lantern.  That's what they're there for...

To be fair, I tried jumping off the bird once to glide toward the Rito village, and the game wouldn't let me; it counted it as a fall. One of the very few instances where the game didn't let me do what I wanted.

The elephant does that too as I missed the trunk when gliding and landed in the water.

I looked, trust me.  I chopped down about 30 trees hoping to get a tree branch drop but no luck.  Of course as soon as I'd completed the task the torch was right there in front of me.

Pretty sure that to get a tree branch you

cut down a narrow tree, not a full size one

Can you point the Shiekah Sensor to one of the memory photos? I was sure I was told I could but when I tried it just gave me the option to select photos from the compendium.

No, it's specific items, creatures or shrines you can search for, not vaguely-specified locations! But I see your logic - if you have a photo of it, why can't you track it?

I think I made the same misinterpretation as you.  When you get the camera, the assistant guy in the tech lab will...

Spoiler

sell you photos that you can use to locate things.  I think it was his dialog that made me think I could point it to any photo, but you can only point it to (items in) photos you take, or he sells.  Basically, his photos fill out your compendium

I love mucking about its the AI in this.

Spoiler for an item you can buy and general AI behaviour:

Spoiler

I was using my Moblin mask to infiltrate the castle last night and got to watch a Moblin playing football with a spherical bomb I'd dropped. I assume he was trying to get it away from him but because of the enclosed room we were in it looked like he was practising his dribbling.

The only thing I can really think of in this game that I don't look forward to are the gyroscopic puzzles in some of the shrines - way too faffy and I keep tilting the pad forwards so I can't see it.  Much easier on the telly.  That's really about it!  I would say some of the baddies are a bit solid, but I know I'll come back to them when I've got better equipment and will kick the shit out of them - that's just something that makes me want to keep playing.

So gyroscopic puzzles - the only weak point I can think of.

But otherwise, it really is incredibly polished - and I think it's now easy to see why it was delayed for so long.  It's just a shame it's arrived so late in the day for the Wii U's life cycle.
