Couple of others:

  Reveal hidden contents

- Diving into a ring of lily pads

- Melting ice boulders (this one I only learnt about today)

And a few variants:

Variants of hiding under a stone:

- the stone is also hidden under a metal door lying on the grass which you need to move with your powers.

- the stone is also hidden under a pile of rocks that needs to be blown away. There's at least one in the Goro domain that's under 'gem' rock outcrops (might be one that needs a Goro Cannon to get at in the North Mine).

It's a good game, but Nintendo clearly don't have good experience with the genre and are still getting to learn the ropes,

Nah, they did it with Pikmin and they did it with Splatoon and Nintendo have once again shown that don't need to have experience in a genre to come in and smash it. More than that, they have the ability to reach out to an audience that ordinarily wouldn't play a certain type of game. Stuff like Assassins Creed 2 and Red Dead Redemption quickly bore and irritate me.  I've either dabbled with and disliked or simply not had any interest in most of the games cited as influencing this.

Breath of the Wild is something else though.  It's stunningly constructed with exploration and survival gameplay to match.  But, importantly,  it's also very accessible and instantly appealing to play and play around with. And it only gets more enjoyable to spend time with as the game progresses.

Not my favourite Zelda for a number of reasons, but it's comfortably my favourite open world.

They also pretty much invented Open World as a concept didn't they? It may seem small now, but Ocarina's Hyrule Field was the first time I'm aware of where a game dumps you outside and lets you head off wherever you like.

The very first Legend of Zelda did this in 1986.

The original Legend of Zelda let you do that, and A Link To The Past. Mario 64 too. So yeah, it's laughable to suggest Nintendo lack experience when they've directly or indirectly influenced a lot of the games Breath of The Wild is compared with.

I went back to the great plateau to get a few apples earlier for the little guy on top of

the deku tree...

Two hours later I had 60 apples, discovered a few new shrines (off plateau), killed my first talus and decided I should try the lynel again... I failed... but I did complete my zora armour and a few quests in the lost woods....

For the last hour my husband kept asking me when we were having dinner and I kept saying "in a minute..." "I just need to do..." "after I've got this...."

This game!

OK, I bought this digitally now so I'm going to sell the cart. I figured, I'll be playing this for months to come, dipping in and out finding new stuff, so it makes sense.

A mate is coming over tomorrow for a mad Zelda sesh, starting it from scratch. Although I'm a good way through it, with over 65 hours playtime, I have no problem starting a new game with him and trying a new route.

Make sure you make a new user profile for him or else your saves will get overwritten.

Also, make the HUD pro before he leaves the resurrection chamber.

I just got to a bit I was really anticipating but what happened when I got there what kind of disappointing:

  Reveal hidden contents

The Yiga clan hideout in the desert. My introduction to the the Yiga was as I was riding my horse one night after I'd decided to venture off a bit. Found a person crying, you go to help but something doesn't feel quite right. Of course it was one of the Yiga clan and they immediately go after you in quite a menacing way. I actually ran off on my horse as quick as I could like "nope nope nope nope nope."

Given that excellent introduction and the building references to them as I continued to play I expected when I inevitably had to face them for real that they'd be even more sinister. The reality was that entering their hideout was easy and their leader was a goofy pushover. Meh.

I thought that was kind of a running joke. They're one of the easiest enemies in the game and yet they think they're some sort of clandestine super-assasins. I'm shit at combat and I anihilate them in seconds whenever they ambush me. Bunch of chumps.

I jumped on the train today and noticed the guy next to me playing candy crush or similar on his phone. I got out my Switch and started playing Zelda. A few mins later while entering a shrine I glanced over and he was playing Link to the Past on his phone! :D

- Rock hidden under dry leaves that you need to burn.

- Shootable acorn (?) in hole in the side of a tree.

One thing that puzzles me is the accusations of empty space.   For me the game is teeming with life.  There is always something to see, do, interact with.

Maybe they're just missing the Ubi-icons telling them where there is interesting stuff; so that they don't realise it all is interesting, it's just you have to have a bit of imagination, for once.

Oooh, yeah, I knew about the first (you can also

Deku leaf 'em away, I think

but not about the second - I'll keep an eye out for those.

The very first one I did was within a few minutes of starting the game;

heading to the first location after meeting the old guy by the fire, looking into the pond on the way and spotting the ring of flowers in the water under a convenient high rock outcrop; one perfect swan dive later and 'Ya-ha-ha-ha!'

; that classic Zelda-ism brought a huge smile to my lips. I knew I was home...

Yeah, I think they are comically easy to defeat by design, but freezycold has a point also.

Spoiler

Maybe if you get to that hideout early on in the game you get some kind of challenge. I was late to that section and had enough stamina to just run to the big room, only having to fight two. Then basically dart through the stealth bit with my stealth clothes on chucking one bunch of bananas . I couldn't help but compare it to similar sections in previous games which I have enjoyed. Nice touch with the bananas though and robbing their big stash. And Boss Master Konga or whatever his name is was still fun to do.

Guess who beat a Guardian with just a shield today? Yes, that'd be me (or Link). The timing is quite easy actually as they make a beep noise just as they fire at you. Also, some people would've done it but one particular shrine

I entered a dark/pitch black area where you had to light a load of statues that pointed you towards a Hinux who was wearing a ball on his neck that opened a shrine.

I was going to go off and start the next dungeon as I've found it but today, I spent most of my time hunting for fire resistance ingredients, killing Guardians and farming gems on Death Mountain :)

Anybody know where I can get some Cane Sugar, I want to bake some cakes?

What's in the purple rice balls? Is it monster extract?

Cane sugar I've not found in the wild, I've only seen it in shops.

I think the problem with the cooking is that there isn't really a lot of incentive to try and make actually nice dishes. Chuck 5 of the same thing in a pot and you've probably got all your needs met for most of the game. I never managed to make a better temporary heart potion than just chucking in 5 of one fruit for example (durian was it?)

I did experiment trying to make proper dishes for a while but I couldn't discern any difference in effect between a nice dish and something that sounded horrible (hello tough fish with fried greens). It would have been good if 'proper' dishes actually did give you a worthwhile benefit but the system doesn't seem geared that way. It seems to work by simply multiplying the effect of each individual ingredient, so the outcome is simply based on the quality of each individual ingredient rather than the whole.

Man, just went wandering around Hateno village in the pissing rain.

The bloody sheep huddle together under the trees in an attempt to keep dry!

The attention to detail in this game is marvellous.

Something rather stupid I did on the Goron boss last night:

  Hide contents

I decided (as with most bosses) to primarily use arrows, but was getting really frustrated that every time I nocked an arrow to fire, the fucker would hit me with an instant explosive fire attack, taking most of my hearts and leaving me on the deck. I scrabbled to my feet, ran to cover, scarfed some grub, jumped up in the air and drew to fire. Boom. Fireball flattens me out of nowhere again. Tried again. Same result. Even when I was in mostly cover. What? Now I'm starting to get really pissed off. Are they really so blatantly saying that I can't use a bow against this guy! Fucking hell.

Gonna get in his face then. Into the inventory to pick a better sword. Oh! What's this? I'm loaded with bomb arrows? As soon as I pull one out my quiver, the fucking thing explodes in the intense heat of the volcanic caldera. Muthafucker.

I just did the same tonight on my latest 3 hour run the battery down session!

And I did the thing in your spoiler!

All four bests done, 57 shrines and after 75 hours I still stumbled into areas I haven't been!

Yeah, dash of monster extract to get that purple colour.

Ive been hunting out new towns in the hope somebody would be selling sugar - no luck so far. When I get some though I'm going snout deep! I get that you only need a couple of dishes, but it's all part of the adventure for me.

Plus, I can't have that other guy walking around thinking he's the best cook in the land...
