Ruta dungeon & boss done; spent ages scratching my head at the puzzle before realising I could have picked up the map straight away & couldn't actually progress without it.

These interactive Divine Beasts were designed for touch pad play without diverting from the screen. Such a shame. :(

how do you stun the 'normal' big rock monsters (ie ones that aren't fire or ice) so you can hitch a ride?

They don't need to be stunned in order to jump on, but if you stay out just out of close range, they'll throw one of their arms at you. If you're expecting it, it's an easy dodge, and then the Talus will crouch down to replace the arm. This is a good opportunity to jump on.

I wouldn't worry too much, even if you are a terrible shot you will struggle to use 20.

Oh yeah, I wasn't stockpiling them for that, I just buy arrows whenever the opportunity arises (and then never use them, clearly).

Ding the black rock with a regular arrow and they'll go down briefly, though climbing on top doesn't always help. Also, after they've lobbed a couple of boulders at you they'll dig in the ground for replacements, which is another opportunity. Stasis can also help, but ultimately you can just run straight through their legs and clamber up that way. Originally I tried to keep some distance from them for arrow attacks, but now I try to stick close and take advantage of their clumsiness.

yeah - playing through it, you can obviously see how slick the WiiU only version would have been with the slate always available, touch to drop pins, touch to interact with a divine beast.

Wind Waker in particular used the pad really well to allow you to quickly get to new items and stuff... in the original WiiU version, you'd likely go into battle with food on the touchscreen.

I absolutely love the baby Taluses you get in the mountains.

So very cute. Just wibble-wobbling around after me.

Then I blow them to fuck with a sheikah bomb. Daddy needs amber.

My partner got really pissed off at me yesterday for killing them. Although he laughed for about 5 minutes non stop when he saw the expression on a bulls face when I accidentally killed one of them.

I actually got punched by one yesterday, I rolled down a hill for ages.

Goron golf can suck a dick, I'm properly rubbish at aiming with stasis and then I end up panicking it it all goes wrong.

Now that I've finished this I just don't quite know where to go from here, ultimately I need a small break from it but am worried I won't want to return. Thing is, if this was on PS4/Xbone I know that this would be one of those rare games that I want to try and 100% but stupidly it feels pointless to 100% a game on a Nintendo machine. I'm actually thinking to just watch youtube vids along the lines of 'Cool secret stuffs in BOTW' etc rather than spending more time with it, It's like, why bother doing quests for more money when there is nothing new and worthwhile to buy? The most enticing things to me are the open world 'bosses' I left behind? I saw many huge amazing creatures along the way that I left behind due to being too scared.

If you've still to finish the game and are like me, I'd hold off on going to Ganon. Make it last as long as possible because once you defeat it you might start to question why you're continuing. Hopefully you don't and just continuing to play in a world you love is enough but for me I'm finding myself wanting to catch up with other games or that whole 'life' thing.

This is me. I found myself rushing through the Beasts. And actually I'm gonna take a deep breath (of the wild) and go and chill out for a bit. Hunt me some dragons, do some side quests, pimp up my armour, follow my nose (and the beep of the shrine radar) for a few weeks. I don't really want to finish it, as I expect to have fuck all interest in any other game for a while afterwards.

My first one was a nightmare, but I'm pretty sure he was the worst kind. The Zora one was relatively painless for some reason - I had some yellow hearts, but he didn't even get into my reds. Ice arrows and stasis (which lasted longer on him than I expected) were the key. I forget which weapons I used, but nothing especially fancy. I'm sure the next one will level me due to overconfidence.

Looking back I expect the game may have been trying to subtly hint that shock arrows were the key, but ice did the trick right enough.

Shock arrows do shit all to him. Hadn't really occured to me to use anything other than basic weapons, to be honest. It felt a bit masochistic, but in a good way like Dark Souls, rather than in a bad, watching BBC1 on Saturday night kind of way.

I had time for a couple of long sessions over the weekend, and finally did the first "proper" dungeon. Spoilers for the run up to that, and the dungeon itself:

I have to say, I was almost worried about focusing on the main quest line, so much fun had I been having pootling around just doing whatever I felt like doing.

I needn't have worried. The whole run up to Zora's domain in the rain was a delight, a sort of extended super charged version of the same journey in Ocarina of Time. Lots of fun enemy encounters along the way, and a great feeling of gradually unpicking a quite knotty environment. Not quite a maze, but enough of a change from the previous grassy hills and mountains to make you have to sit up and pay attention to your route.

Zora's domain itself was packed with more NPCs than previous Zeldas would have over their entire duration, and after the dungeon was done it seemed as if practically all of them had a side quest to give me. Nice rendition of the OoT music too.

But first, the dungeon. I have to say, I found this another highlight. I got massively stuck right from the outset, as I failed to solve the simple gate puzzle in the first room. So I probably made more of a meal of it than I should, as after I finally solved that the rest was fairly straightforward. But even so, it's an ingenious, novel design that was just really satisfying to unpick. The boss took me three attempts because I was looking for the specific gimmick to kill him, but it turns out you just need to smack/shoot him, and he went down easily.

Oh, and my first meeting with the Lynel I've seen mentioned so many times here resulted in about 20 deaths, so I just yoinked the shock arrows and ran. I'll be back for him later.

I'm now back to exploring again, and clearing up a few side quests. I'm struggling to think of a game that's made me so consistently happy to play it, ever. There's not one single in-game activity where I ever think "I'd rather be doing something else". It doesn't matter what I'm doing - whether it's major stuff like progressing the plot, or minor activities like jumping around on rocks, selling stuff and getting new outfits, finding Korok seeds, doing shrines, riding my horse, whatever you can think of - it's all just a total, absolute joy.

Oh my, even post finishing the game I had totally forgot about that enemy. It would be cool to go back and hopefully easily kill it. That would be satisfying, I just tried to survive during that encounter. Didn't even attempt to damage it.

Didn't you get the specific side quest to go tackle him after doing the dungeon? I spoke to every NPC afterwards and one of them gave me the quest to deal with it.

Im in a similar position - I've got one divine beast to do, and then its time to take down Ganon.... except i dont want to continue with the story line. I just want to explore every area, and complete the side quests, and visit all the shrines, and upgrade my armour, and experiment with cooking, and find all the memories, and do the mazes and find the mini games... etc etc.

This game is truly massive - just visiting one of the villages gives you hours of side quests. I never want it to end. Its just so rewarding, and i look forward to booting it up EVERY SINGLE TIME.

I'm about 130 hours deep.... and i can see that being doubled if i'm quite honest.

You got a quest to photograph him. All I can say to that is, it's a good job you're not a paparazzi.

Stasis was my friend, first one I took out (in the Colosseum).

But to be honest, aiming and timing it seemed to be harder than timing a shield parry.

Well, it does look like you got your house completed, so you visited one particular one quite a lot...

Had various stints on the game at the weekend, even with the playtime I'm still only mooching around the south/ south east/ east of the map, discovering shrines, just enjoying exploring. Went to Eventide Island and after several attempts gave that a miss :), discovered the fishing village, tried to find the illuminated ruin shared, helped two people fall in love, beat an armoured robot in a shrine via attrition with a box and magnesis slowly battering it to pieces, fought sheep rustlers from afar rolling bombs down a hill for 15 minutes as too scared to take them on with my weapons, trounced on two "Show of Strength" shrines, watched mesmerised and in awe as some electric dragon swam from waterfall to waterfall with no idea what it is, ran up a hill as the moonlight illuminates swathes of billowing grass...and been zapped by lightning, even after only arming myself with a lead. Probably wearing a heavy suit of armour doesn't help.

I'm amazed how happy I am to just explore, part of me wonders if I'll ever get to the end of the game at this rate and 3/4s of the map still to explore and other places to return to. I'm just amazed at how engrossed I am in doing nothing in particular, when I'm usually very much someone who wants to see the storyline play out.

This works on practically any large enemy from any video game. I've exploited a bunch of Bloodborne and DSII bosses by doing this.

I struggled on Waterblight Ganon because you can't do that by swimming. xD

As I say, I didn't try shock arrows at all, but the fact that they're stuck into every tree made me think perhaps they were important, and he didn't seem to be using any himself (I may not have given him the chance). But I guess perhaps he used them against the Zora, I may not have paid full attention to all the dialogue in Zora's Domain.

I would have clobbered him with bomb arrows but, of course, it was raining. I shot off three or four, thinking I'd fudged the swap and was firing regular arrows, before I twigged what was going on. Balls to it, I'll just hit him with this big hammer.

Something rather stupid I did on the Goron boss last night:

Spoiler

I decided (as with most bosses) to primarily use arrows, but was getting really frustrated that every time I nocked an arrow to fire, the fucker would hit me with an instant explosive fire attack, taking most of my hearts and leaving me on the deck. I scrabbled to my feet, ran to cover, scarfed some grub, jumped up in the air and drew to fire. Boom. Fireball flattens me out of nowhere again. Tried again. Same result. Even when I was in mostly cover. What? Now I'm starting to get really pissed off. Are they really so blatantly saying that I can't use a bow against this guy! Fucking hell.

Gonna get in his face then. Into the inventory to pick a better sword. Oh! What's this? I'm loaded with bomb arrows? As soon as I pull one out my quiver, the fucking thing explodes in the intense heat of the volcanic caldera. Muthafucker.
