How to do lost woods:

Follow the lanterns until they stop - the direction of the flame points towards the next checkpoint.

When the lanterns stop, take a lit torch and follow the direction of the flame - when you're running, the flame will be pushed behind you, so if you spot that it's going to one side, turn into it to correct.

I did it slightly differently

Spoiler

You don't need the torch. Just follow the direction the floating light things are being blown. After thinking for ages that is was something to do with the faces on the trees I noticed that the floaty things were moving in the same direction I was walking between the torches. Take sensible steps and it's quite easy to see the path they are being swept along.

Well, 75 hours in and Rito boss dropped on first go. Very, very easy so I assumed I was a bit OP. Feeling suitably hard I went back to have another crack at the Gerudo one I'd previously jibbed. But that fast fuck handed me my arse yet again. Crazily harder than the Zora or Rito ones. Like Dark Souls hard. I can't perfect block/dodge for shit, so fuck that. Just about to head into the Goron beast. I'll have another go at the Gerudo one when I'm stupidly OP and ready for a pre-Castle clean up. Expect I'll just kit up and grind it out.

How do you change saddles?

You need to have a spare saddle, and speak to a girl in one of the stables. And you need to have the love of your horsie.

What's up? I just did that bit myself. Enjoyed it very much, too.

I had to switch it off after playing all afternoon, I must be missing something blindingly obvious. About to leave the area and go adventuring elsewhere!

Spoiler

So I've go the abandoned Northern mine to find the bloke who's stuck inside and I can hear him but there is no way I can shift the rocks in front. I've done another side quest where you meet a couple of brothers, one of which goes through a similar set of rocks but they seem to have disappeared as well. And the big cannons I thought I might be able to move are, as far as I can tell, immovable. So can't aim one of those. Am totally stumped.

You can aim them.

There's so much cool shit hidden in this game, it means you're constantly expecting to run into more cool shit, which in turn means you can wander around and explore for hours and absolutely enjoy the hell out of it.

Lord of the Mountain. That is all.

As someone who has never cared about the story in Zelda games, I think it's been really well integrated in BOTW. Like, the plot is pretty standard stuff but it provides context to your actions without having an overwhelming sense of urgency which would discourage exploration. Gannon isn't going anywhere so you can just chill, get stronger, and go fuck him up when you feel ready.

The memories are cool too. Taking the well-worn amnesia trope and turning it into a way to get you exploring the world while fleshing out the story.

Some of the incidental dialogue is charming as fuck also.

Amazing game.

Scratched off a few of the side-quests, as having such a long list was bugging me a bit. Bought a house, beat a Hinox, and discovered my first hidden shrine!

Then on to Akkala as a couple of quests seem to be hinting that it's a good next area. Getting up the tower was a great puzzle challenge. Still can't believe it's only my 4th area mapped, and that there's 10 to go! It's bloody enormous. I do like exploring plenty of each area before unlocking a new one though.

I thought the core narrative was too light to be honest. I didn't quite feel the usual 3D Zelda emotion at the story's conclusion. The voice acting didn't exactly elevate it either.

The game does an excellent job of conveying the overall scenario though. I felt the impact of what happened "one hundred years ago".

Goron boss down. Lovely dungeon. 4 dungeons / 3 bosses done. Also found I was quite a bit OP for that boss too. Weird how much harder I find Gerudo boss. I must be doing something wrong. Time for an epic trawl of side quests, memories and shrines. I might even wander towards the castle for a gander.

Ruta dungeon & boss done; spent ages scratching my head at the puzzle before realising I could have picked up the map straight away & couldn't actually progress without it.

Boss was simple in the first phase but couldn't work out the second one so just ended up using arrows.

The whole thing was a nice diversion but probably the weakest bit of the game so far.

This there any way to turn off the "shrine nearby" bleeps? They irritate!

Also how near are they when the bleeping is going off? I don't see anything quite often so i suspect they are hidden ones?

I think you turn it off using the Y button on the Map Screen.

I sussed out the distance and exactly how the beeper works by playing around once I'd found one (but not activated it). It's really simple to understand then how distance effects the beep and what angle of approach they're picked up in etc.

You can switch it off in the map screen and pressing Y for the sheika options I think.

They beep from quite far away, sometimes they're hidden but there can easily be a mountain between yourself and the shrine. I keep mine turned on as I've found quite a lot of shrines this way I might have missed otherwise (especially the more obscure ones like the ones hidden behind a waterfall - an orange glow at the bottom of the water gives them away but they're easy to miss if you don't scan every inch of the world carefully.

Da-da-da-daa! You have unlocked Epic Zelda Sessions.

I just use the pro controller for those! I've only played on the Wii U controller a couple of times, I think it looks pretty crap and doesn't do the game justice. Not something that's bothered me with any other game but I'd rather just not play it than play it in bed on that.

I think I might possibly be ready to get in that elephant tonight. I've been asked on several occasions whether I have enough shock arrows - yes, over a hundred of the bastards. I went up and battered the nearby Lynel too, even though it wasn't necessary. My daughter's getting good too, she can take down most creatures and is getting the hang of dodging and flurrying, though she's still a scourge on resources - more than anything else, she's inspired me to make use of good weapon pickups, because if I don't use them as soon as I get them it's a safe bet she'll piss them away on Chuchus later on.

Unlocked one new area over the weekend, up north with the big spiral. The majority of the map is open now, but it's clear that the remaining areas are absolutely huge, and it looks like we're not equipped to get to them yet anyway.

Can you tell your total play time on the Wii U? I can see from the daily log that it's going to be a sobering figure, but I can't find a grand sum anywhere and I'm well out of touch with the whole Wii U system.

In other news, Nintendo had the brass neck to send me an email today telling me all about the wonderful things I can do with the range of Zelda Amiibos. Yeah, I'll get right on that as soon as the shops open, you stupid bastards.

I find it near-unplayable on the screen (too small a window into such a big world) but couldn't do without gyro aiming.

I killed Lionel up above Zora's Domain and broke every single weapon I had in the process - took a few goes too, as I basically had to perfect dodge all his attacks. Later found another Lionel with 50% more health.

My first one was a nightmare, but I'm pretty sure he was the worst kind. The Zora one was relatively painless for some reason - I had some yellow hearts, but he didn't even get into my reds. Ice arrows and stasis (which lasted longer on him than I expected) were the key. I forget which weapons I used, but nothing especially fancy. I'm sure the next one will level me due to overconfidence.

Looking back I expect the game may have been trying to subtly hint that shock arrows were the key, but ice did the trick right enough.

I wouldn't worry too much, even if you are a terrible shot you will struggle to use 20.
