Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Best served with a side order of Heroic or Legendary

Has this actually been officially confirmed? I could have sworn that the MS presentation said it would ship with six maps, and the story linked to above doesn't seem to have any sources beyond someone on GAF listing every single map.

6 Halo 2 maps have been chosen to be remade, the others are exactly the same as before.

If you like Halo, this is basically the FPS equivalent of Super Mario All-Stars, but even better value.

In addition to the 45 campaign missions you get with The Master Chief Collection, you can play with your friends on over 100 multiplayer and Spartan Ops maps (including the original Halo: Combat Evolved maps)

It’s easy to criticise MS for milking Halo until it’s raw and spongy and nothing’s coming out of the end, but at the same time it’s kind of cool that the people at 343 are so insanely in love with Halo that they do insane, impractical, things like stick over a hundred levels on an FPS. They could easily have just chucked out a bare-bones release of each game in the series individually, but I respect the fact that they’re putting so much effort into this, even if it’s creatively bankrupt and a bit mad.

All they have to do now is announce some kind of limited edition along the lines of the Halo: Reach one, and I will pledge my allegiance to Microsoft forever and get a Halo tattoo of some kind on my face. I don’t want new, frightening things that require me to invest some effort in liking them, I just want the old, comforting things in higher and higher resolutions forever.

There's a preview of this in Eurogamer today, which has a couple of interesting points. The first one is that you can't create custom single-player level playlists - you can only play the ones that 343 curate, which seems a bit potty. Surely if you want to play through the levels in alphabetical order, then it wouldnt be a massive technical problem to let you do so? I'd love to do alternate Chief-only and Arbiter-only Halo 2 playthroughs, it seems weird to only let me do it if 343 decide it's a good idea as well. Although to be honest, the playlists are neat, but I can't really see them getting much use - how often do you play through more than one Halo level in a single session these days? Each one takes about an hour.

The other point is that all of the games will be in 1080p / 60fps apart from Halo 2, which they seem to think will end up at less than 1080p. This is apparently because you can flick between the old and the new dandified graphics, and that the new visuals have been done to Xbox One quality (as opposed to Halo Anniversary, which will presumably retain the enhanced graphics of the 360 version), but it's still not that great an advert for the Xbox One if Microsoft's hand-picked, lavishly funded super-developer 343 can't get one of their biggest releases of 2014 running at 1080p.

Yeah it's odd that you can't make your own playlists, although for a package that's such self-confessed fan service I do expect that they'll launch with every obviously conceivable theme, and he does at least say they'll add more with feedback. Personally I'd go for all the classically green Halo-esque levels; Halo, Silent Cartographer, Delta Halo, Regret, The Covenant, Requiem.

Sounds like the live switching between old and new is mostly what's giving them performance headaches with Halo 2, although it's nice that it'll be instant this time. I wonder if the updated Halo CE: Anniversary will also switch faster?

I'd rather they'd prioritise performance over switching, cool gimmick though it may be.

Sounds like the Halo 5 beta runs for 3 weeks and the content will change through the run. I wonder how much of the beta will be a way to gauge preferences of the community and how much impact Halo2 will have on that. And how it will stand up to people's memories of it.

Between them, those pages confirm that Forge and Saved Films returning for Halo 3 and 4 multiplayer - and it seems that both will be added to Halo 2 as well! (Although it seems like Forge won't be available for all Halo 2 maps, just the six specially-designed "remixed" ones.) Aiming to include some sort of fileshare system, too.

What about Campaign films and Campaign Scoring, I wonder? A website with service records as detailed as Bungie used to keep?

They say there'll be the option to choose either game-specific control schemes, or select one universal scheme to apply across all the games. Ever since Reach, I've had melee on RB. When I play the older games, I don't have much trouble switching back to melee on B, but that's if I'm sitting down to a fairly long session with one control scheme - it might be quite awkward to go straight from one ten-minute multiplayer match in Halo 2 to one in Halo 3! There shouldn't be a problem incorporating RB melee into Halo 2, where left-hand/right-hand pickups were on X and Y, but I wonder how well that will work with Halo 3?

So are the PC maps for CE and 2 in or out? I thought that Nelson guy had said somewhere that the PC maps were not included.

Also, that's a nice image but it doesn't feel right that Bungie isn't mentioned anywhere; not even on the cover images of each game.

I really don't see it. They are mentioned on the cover of the collection, but the cover images of CE and 2 only mention 343 and Microsoft Studios. They are also not mentioned in any of the text, not even in the 'developed by' bit. Edit: no big deal, just something I couldn't help but notice.

In.

All associated downloadable content will be included as well. That means all maps ever released — including for the PC versions of Halo — will be included. “That’s well north of 100 maps,” 343 executive producer Dan Ayoub told GamesBeat. “If it was released in any form, it’ll be in here.”

Those Halo2 cutscenes are incredible.

Dont get carried away. Halo: Anniversary was already made, Halo 2 looks good but theyre struggling to hit 1080p, and only 6 multiplayer maps are being remade. Halo 3 and 4 will be great, but theyre the equivalent of PC ports to 60fps and 1080p. Dont get me wrong, its really good, but there's arguably no Halo game that's as good as Half Life 2, no original content in here to rival Portal or Episode 2, nothing with the impact of TF2.

Its good but Orange Box is still the greatest.
