I never thought there was any suggestion of holobabe being anything other than a hologram. To be honest, if there had been, it would have been too big a leap of the imagination for me. That kinda thing is just bollocks.

What confused me more is: why is Harrison Ford the only guy living in the plush luxury of an abandoned Vegas casino? There was some waffle about radiation, but you'd think the tech savvy population of this future world would have quickly realised that the place was now habitable again, and swarms of people would have abandoned the cramped and crumbling slums of LA.

Deckard can live there because he's a replicant [/spolier]

Not buying either of those.

The little camera scan thing that Ryan Gosling did said "Radiation Levels: nominal", so any radiation danger was gone ... any pleb could live there, seemingly.

And surely LA isn't the only city left in America? Other people could've made their way to Vegas and re-populated it. The film made it out to be a ghost town.

Little things like that annoy me ... but it was a good watch nonetheless.

Spoiler

We see one little bit of the place, one hotel. Maybe there were more people hiding out there, but we're not looking for them. There wasn't much to tie Deckard to the Bees was there. Just that the place was safe for bees, dogs and some old guy and his arsenal of booby-traps.

It's also a cracking example of how we really on technology so much that it was almost a warning of sorts that eventually people will end up living alone with only a software program for company

Spoiler

Note that K didn't really have much choice in living companions: humans hate him because he's a replicant, replicants hate him because he's a blade runner.

Genuinely surprised there's not more talk in here. Maybe after this weekend.

I really do need to see this again. One thing I did like, is that the film touched on a suspicion I'd held for a long time:

  Hide contents

That the meeting of Deckard and Rachael was deliberate. Niander Wallace* explicitly implies that as truth, but he's a cunt trying hurt Deckard.

*Why is the name, Niander Wallace, so familair?  It bugged me during the film, and is still bugging me now!!

Same here, thought this would be rammed full of posts today.

Spoiler

I thought he was just trying to wind him up. I think he specifically says something like ‘didn’t you ever wonder if...’ which to me implies that he’s just trying to break him to get the information out of him. But for all we know, with access to what’s left of Tyrell he may be speaking the truth.

Just another excellent example of what I think is one of the films massive strengths the more I’ve thought about it all day instead of doing any work: that there is just so much in it that can be interpreted in whatever personal way you see fit. The more I think about what I saw last night the more impressed I am.

They're are plenty of the umbrella in one of the pan shots of the streets.

I think the various performances do deserve a mention. Considering a fair number of the supporting cast had a pretty small amount of screen time I thought they were all excellent.

Spoiler

Jared Leto gets a lot of shit on here but I thought he was really good. I’ve only ever seen him in Fight Club so may not have the prejudice of someone who’s seen Suicide Squad.

The pink haired replicant, Edward James Olmos, Princess Buttercup, Sapper, Joi, Luv, the dude who worked on the front desk at Wallace’s, the guy who identified where the wooden horse came from, I thought they were all really good. They gave so much life and personality to some very small parts. I thought the cast outside of the big billed names was exemplary.

Peugot and Atari are still in the future, thats hard to cop.

Spoiler

Well, so are Pan-Am. So it's ignoring real-world stuff like that and continuing the original Blade Runner world.

Oh yeah someone fell asleep half way  in the film, it was noticeable because he was snoring so loud that a staff member had  to wake him up.

Haha someone was snoring through my showing yesterday too!

I enjoyed this but didn't think it was as good as the original.

There's just something I can't put my finger on that it was missing...

Luv. The game leads you to believe it's K, then when it's proven to be a girl, Luv is a very convincing alternative, even bearing a resemblance to Rachel. It's the one thing I was pleased with at the end, that the film ultimately managed to surprise me. And that ending at least did make sense.

I thought they were simply telling you who the daughter was by doing that flashback to the 'saying "that was definitely someone's real memory" as she cried' scene, and was annoyed they decided to do an explicit reveal rather than leaving the audience to work it out. Interesting to see not everyone read that the same way!

Just saw this at the IMAX Printworks. Please experience it on a proper IMAX screen, however far you need to travel, because it was an absolute joy.

I loved it. The film just pulls you into its world with the stunning visuals and sound, and it’s filled with ideas like the very best of sci-fi.

The pacing is perfect. It builds slowly and surely, and it never drags. I did wonder where it was it was all heading, but once the final act starts you know you’re in good hands, and the ending justifies everything that came before it. It goes against almost everything that you’d expect from a big Hollywood blockbuster these days, which is so refreshing.

One gripe: I thought it explained what was going on a little too much, and one character in particular contributed to that:

Joi. I would have preferred it more like ‘Drive’, with less talking and more emotion. I wasn’t really interested in her plot strand and didn’t feel anything when she was killed. I also didn’t care much for his boss, and don’t think the film would lose anything by cutting a few of her scenes.

I’m not a huge fan of the original film, but this will definitely help me see that in a different light.

Watched this yesterday. Loved it, completely enthralled beginning to end.

Deckard seeing a Rachel copy, anyone know how they did that. It was uncanny.

Spoiler

Rogue One Tarkin-style CG creation laid over a stand-in actress. It's the only part of the film I didn't like, and feared it was coming once that silhouette appeared. Uncanny is the word :P

Strong characters, I reckon. No-one as memorable as Roy.

Kermode loved it:

I wasn't as bowled over as many were, as I was with Arrival, but Mark brings up the slow, measured editing which was tremendously refreshing in a AAA Hollywood blockbuster. It felt like a proper, adult, sci-fi - it has to be the best blockbuster I've seen for decades. I'm not surprised people fell asleep - it felt worlds apart from most big budget movies.

Definitely going to see it again.

My friend kept falling asleep and snoring - I had to poke him awake several times.

I enjoyed but don't think it needed such a long run time.

I've never been back and rewatched Blade Runner since the directors cut came out.  I remember it as visually stunning, with interesting themes and really unengaging characters (apart from Roy).

It was an odd experience though watching the new one over 20 year later.  I don't know whether Villeneuve is better at invoking more empathy for characters than Scott, or whether it's to do with me changing over the last couple of decades.

The new film's great and I am half tempted to revisit the first.
