Bloodborne - GOTD edition

I confess I had not given it this level of thought! I had assumed... Online: messages, co-op, invasions. Offline: no messages, no co-op other than NPCs, no invasions other than NPCs. Can anyone refute? I'm more or less always online.

In other news, for some reason I'm rereading this thread from the beginning. I enjoyed the tree puns, and now I'm at the Edge 'Verdict' bit. Looking forward to my own first post and the actual release of the game, when I'll be able to click on spoilers! :D Good seeing various established players' early comments, from anticipation to trepidation.

Aww, @Minion posted asking about invasions a week before release and has only just got into the game! Have you been invaded yet, my friend? :D #threadreread

Haha! No I have not I don't think, though I've fought a few NPC hunters now.

Forbidden Woods Spoliers:

So I killed the dude at the top of the hut as I said last night I angered him accidentally and when I opened the shortcut to the lamp I was attacked by another hunter, lost 45k Echoes to him as he killed me 3 times but the 4th time I was proper up for the fight and downed him well. So now I've ventured further into the forest through the shortcut and there are loads of snake men dudes around and I accidentally just walked into a corner where 2 or 3 of them were, got my head sucked and lost almost all health, I panicked and tried to get away and heal which I did but they caught up and then I backed into a flaming horse, caught fire and got smashed by two of them simultaneously! Fuck, so intense! I also saw a big huge snake thing in a pit, it's why I backed off and ended up in this corner! I've been playing for almost 2 hours now and feel tired out by it all, what a game.I'm going to try and get those echoes back I think.

First boss...Thumped me good, but I do know how to kill the bastard now. As usual, I get impatient and try to end things too quickly...A very cruel touch to put both a pack of werewolves, and a big giant chap (and birdies) just before heading off into the fight though :P

There is a way to cheese those wolves, if you want to know then click the spoiler

Get their attention then run back down the stairs to the house, they can't get in it and will be stuck at the door for you to then be able to get in attack and get back, they can still attack you so make sure to time it right

Man, I just dropped 53k echoes deep in the woods, I must be almost at the end of it now, not sure I can face going back in, I was proper deep, near a pig who I killed.

Oh phew! I got them back, if you run past all the enemies it wasn't actually very far! I assume a boss is round the corner then. I think I'm going to go for a cycle ride to relieve the tension bloody hell!

If you take the left route from the first lamp and up through the house, you come out on the bridge past the wolves and don't need to worry about them. You can run past the troll and straight to the boss without having to stop and fight.

I played a bit more today (early-game spoilers):

Spoiler

I managed to kill the Cleric Beast on my third go. It's fantastic to witness yourself getting better and better with each encounter. I was a bit disappointed to find that the bridge was a dead end, however, and my only reward for the fight was a crucifix badge whose description doesn't seem to make much sense, but I'm sure it'll be useful later.

Anyway, after that I stumbled across another big under ground sewer area that was hidden behind some crates. It was full of rats and large half-transformed werewolf enemies who got the better of me the first time around, but I was ready for them on the second visit. I came away with a well-worn set of armour and a few throwing knives.

Next, I doubled back to the lift I'd unlocked last night and started to walk across a narrow bridge that had several enemies at the end of it with a large spherical object behind them. Using my finely-tuned Tomb Raider senses, I correctly anticipated that said object was a rolling boulder of some sort, so after triggering it I was able to gleefully step aside at the last moment and laugh manically as I watched the six or so townsmen who had been running towards me get flattened, the twats. From there I killed a few more enemies and then, completely unexpectedly, came across another, extremely aggressive top hat-wearing boss whose name I didn't catch as I had to immediately start dodge-rolling for dear life. Once I regained my composure, however, I'm proud to say that, following three very flukey visceral attacks and some cheesy use of a tree in the middle of the arena to hide behind, I managed to kill him first time. This led to unbridled cries of jubilation and loud shouts of 'Take that, you cuuuuuuuuuunt', which my wife banged on the wall and told me off about, but it was worth it.

Now I'm in the next area. I've spoken to the strange crouching witch woman in the red cloak and have brought back one of the townspeople to this 'safe place' as she asked, but all I got for it was a gesture. I tried to bring back the nice coughing man who gives you the flamethrower weapon as well, but there doesn't seem to be the option. I'm just wondering if there's anything else left to do in Yarnham before I move on? I've found the hidden female NPC with the bird mask and I think the only place I haven't explored yet it is a long, narrow corridor in the sewers that has some sort of giant boar at the end of it. The giant boar enemies in the original Dark Souls were a right pain, so I'm too scared to venture down there at the moment, and I couldn't see any way around it to attack it from behind and prevent it from inevitably charging at me as soon as I set foot in its corridor. Have I missed something?

Lastly, after nearly 100 hours of grappling with the controls in The Witcher 3 and steering the barge-like Geralt across the environment, the movement in this feels fantastically tight and the combat is so much more satisfying.

Excellent work on Father Gascoigne.

Loudly proclaiming your excellence to otherwise uninterested partners / pets / passers by in the street is a common reaction to killing bosses in Bloodborne. It was like a WWE wrestler entrance in my house when I killed the last dlc boss.

Ha! Yes! I'm definitely getting better at the game, SOY is down! 3rd or 4th try I think. Video to follow :)

Man I know you've all known this for over a year now but this game is the dogs bollocks!

It's great to see you guys getting properly into this. Bloodborne belatedly got me into a series I'd previously written off, and which has now given me around 500 hours of entertainment. It's really, really good.

Killing FG on your first try is outrageously impressive. Would love to see the video of that.

As for the Boar, backtrack to near where the flaming Boulder was, and you should see a ladder...

Ace SoY video Minion. :D It can be difficult keeping track of what everyone's doing but you handled the battle really well. :)

Thanks dude, I just kept moving and my main target was flame ball dude, I realised after getting smashed 3 or 4 times that he was the main cause. I think I fluked a couple of dodges but I got there in the end. I quite like fighting the faster smaller enemies. Must say they looked pretty cool, wish I could have picked up their gear.

Is this common knowledge, or did everyone know about this Bloodborne art book that came out in Japan in February:

http://www.amazon.co.jp/Bloodborne-Official-Artworks-電撃攻略本編集部/dp/4048657984

It looks gorgeous - has anyone bought a copy? I'd be tempted to get one, but importing seems pretty expensive. I despaired of the Dark Souls II design works ever coming out in a translated edition, but they eventually did one, so hopefully this one will hit the UK at some point.

Here's a tip about that, @Minion. I'll spoiler it, in case you really don't want to know...

  Hide contents

Leave her. Come back later. But don't forget her.

Oh really? OK, so should I go to Byrgenwerth instead?

She's pissed me off, I actually want to see her dead lol!

Edit: I decided to go get some revenge in the Forbidden Woods

On the dude that turned into a big beast for which I was prepared this time

Then I went back over Cathedral Ward as there were bits I hadn't fully cleared and then I also went to the right of the Cathedral, spoiler obviously:

There were two Hunters down there, luckily I took them on one by one and they weren't particularly tough considering some of the fights I've had, I guess I was overlevelled for them, I imagine if I found them sooner they would have kicked my arse

Then I found a dead end in a big chapel type place, so onto Byrgenwerth next I think.

I took down the BSB last night. I tried him a couple of times and each time could get him down to his 3rd form but was always beaten down. I had only tried a few times so wasn’t too worried yet but the last time I went down to his area I had a look around the bit outside and found a light that enables me to summon Alfred who I had met earlier. I hadn’t seen this before so gave it ago, he was a rather handy distraction when fighting the BSB and we took him down relatively easily.

Is that a common feature to be able to summon other NPC?

I had to laugh at the end of the fight though, I had been poisoned by the BSB but as the fight had finished I wasn’t really paying attention, I was picking up the collectables and Alfred came over to me and disappeared and I proceeded to drop down dead from the poison. Need to keep your wits about you at all times really eh. Wasn’t the end of the world as it was a quick run back to retrieve all my Echoes and off I went again.

This led me to a bit of a problem, I had absolutely no clue where to go from here. I just assumed a path would open perhaps at the back of BSB lair but nothing was there. I had to resort to looking at a guide to find out that a door had opened up in Cathedral Ward beside the lantern. It never seems that clear in this game the exact route you need to take. Before I found out about this door though I wandered back to Cathedral Ward and got myself into a rather tricky situation. Some new enemies had appeared, floating things with drapes, so I approached one of them and found that my attacks did pretty much nothing and his attacks basically destroyed me, I was dead in seconds but rather than going back to a lantern I ended up in a prison somewhere which was called Yahar'gul, Unseen Village. The floating things seem like prison wardens and there was a lot more of them about. I was getting hammered in this area and have to admit I was getting pissed off. Gave up trying to fight these guys and just started to run past them, I thought I had escaped when I found a hole in a wall out to a path. Headed out along the path and dropped down into a big open area, looked dodgy and sure enough it was, a giant electric dog appeared from the ground and I didn’t stand a chance. It killed me in no time and I thought I would regen back into a proper place but noooooo I was regened back in the chuffing prison again. I did eventually get out, wont say how in case any of the other new players find themselves there too.

Seems a bit harsh to send players to that place early doors.

I then headed out the new Cathedral Ward door and explored there, this opened up some gates and shortcuts for me to explore next time I'm back on. I did find a cool little place that is like a real Yharnam world version of the Hunters Dream, was a cool little find.

Will hopefully be back on tonight to get some proper exploration of this new part.

A general observation I have is that I'm finding that I'm referencing guides a lot more than I thought I would, new items I pick up give no explanation as to what they do or how to use them. I worry that I'm maybe spoiling things by doing this though.

Regarding lack of direction, I've just killed the

Spoiler

Witch of Hemwick

and have absolutely no idea where to go now. Been running around that area for ages but no exits as far as I can see. Might have to go back to an earlier area and run around aimlessly to see if anything has opened up.

@memories Yeah that was the most confusing part of the game for me. You can ignore the jail area for now if you want, it doesn't lead to anything yet anyway. The enemies and the boss there are very tough at this stage in the game. If you want a hint as to how to proceed...

Have a careful look at what the messengers are selling in the bath in the Hunter's Dream

If you want a bit more of a hint...

Specifically look at the keys...

And one final hint! :)

You don't actually need to buy that key to progress. If you go back to the Church where the weird guy asks you to send people who are looking for a safe place, there should be a doorway open that wasn't open before, if you fully explore that area then you should find a new route.

I found the new route in the end, had to check a guide though.

I have seen that for sale as well in the Hunters Dream, never wanted to buy it as I assume that whatever it opens I would get to anyway playing the game, is that not the case?
