Bloodborne - GOTD edition

I have not. I do want to come back to it one day, and when I woke up in the operation room again with all those echos I felt a pang of motivation for the NG+ run. But I also want to join in with all the DS III hype for a bit and see how it is, so will move onto that for now.

I ordered this off Amazon today, I know I'm very late to the party but the Dark Souls 3 hype has made me want to get involved and thought Bloodborne would be a good one to try. I haven't bought it before because I thought I would not have the patience but I really dig the style and atmosphere and I just need to man the fuck up. Looking forward to dying a lot :)

Excellent news! We look forward to your progress... Are you going to be broadcasting at all? I enjoy watching new players, it's like vicariously being there for the first time again :)

Thanks! I'm not sure about broadcasting I've never done it before... I'll keep the thread updated though, I'm sure I'll probably be whining for help at some point!

Nice, I'll check yours out and also think about doing that myself as then I can watch the videos later, that's really cool.

So I've created a character and gone out into the central Yarnham, opened a gate from the back and found a big ladder, oh and near the gate some big fattie with a huge cleaver that killed me several times before I decided to go the otherway where I found a mob who I was dealing with before getting shot in the back! Stopped for a rest and dinner, liking it so far though I do worry I get too tappy tappy with the buttons, I definitely need to get more used to the controls and the way my dude moves/attacks.

I think I'm a bit closer to my remaining trophies now... having recently picked up all weapons in TOH I've been working on getting all weapons in the base game before going on to achieve the other two endings with my current character and DLC character. I think my current character has everything except the weapon from the endgame, so I'm hoping I can do GTFH, get the neutral ending for that trophy, then pick up the weapon from GTFH's badge in NG+, then get the bad ending with my DLC character (although I'll have to see if that character has spoken to G already - it might be too late for him...)

I got the platinum trophy this afternoon, including all trophies for the expansion. GTFH was quite interesting as a Skill/Bloodtinge hybrid, not least because I had two slightly underlevelled combat stats as opposed to pouring everything into one of the four stats. Still, I enjoyed getting lots of quick hits in, although my gun interrupts weren't great...

I can't remember how often I did co-op so I can't comment on whether it's a platinum of shame or not. I know I tried co-op on ML during my first playthrough but solo'd him with my other three characters, and there was one chalice boss I tried summoning an Old Hunter for but he ate shit seconds into the battle so he couldn't really carry me to victory. I still think pure Strength characters with stuff like LHB are the most fun, but my dabblings with Skill and Bloodtinge were interesting nonetheless.

But yeah, the four characters who carried me through were:

My "Finish the game" character  - Strength build

My "Try something new" character - Bloodtinge build

My "Prepare a character for the DLC and maybe get the optional bosses and chalice stuff I didn't get before" character - Strength build

My "Get the other trophies - missing weapons and the bad ending" character - Skill/Bloodtinge hybrid

EDIT: GTFH run (linked because of possible thumbnail spoiler)

I'm picking up a copy of the GotY edition of this tomorrow, not sure how its going to go for me.

I remember years back when Demon Souls first came out and reading folks stories how it sounded amazing, I ordered and imported the Asian version at the time and waited patiently for it. It arrived and I got stuck in to find that I hated it, didn't like what I now know was the "rogue" style gameplay and frustration and lack of patience all meant i spent about 4 hour with it and never returned.

Years on and I read about BB and its like that all over again, it sounds amazing and looks wonderful, I'm keen to get stuck in and am essentially a total noob. I'm older now and feel I will have a bit more patience with this and know to not just go steaming in hammering buttons, I'm looking forward to getting involved.

If I don't like it its only cost me £22 and should get that back from trading or selling so not the end of the world.

Any starter tip welcome.

@memories You are in the exact same position I was in when Bloodborne was released, except I really, really hated Demon's Souls.

Fast forward a year and I've now rinsed Bloodborne (several times), Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 1 & 2, and now I'm playing 3. Bloodborne is the best one in my opinion, but once any one of them clicks, they all click. Because basically, in fairly broad terms, they're all the same game.

As for starter tips, just bear in mind that dying is one of the ways you learn and progress. But try not to worry too much - the difficulty level is exaggerated, and you may find you twat enemies with surprising ease. If not, I always recommend watching this video:

A few weeks ago I actually wrote a thing about stuff like this - not getting on with Souls, liking Bloodborne, etc. The basic framing was that people who hear "Bloodborne is a Souls game" might find that offputting if they didn't like Souls, but without knowing why they didn't like Souls it's a misleading statement. :) I don't like DaS1 at all (the only other game I've played) and BB removes or changes so much of the stuff I disliked that it's completely transformative. The best thing anyone can do is go in with an open mind.

Are you going to give DaS3 a go? I really think you should...

Not right now - other stuff will take up my gaming time for the next few months (I have the Street Fighter V season pass, for instance) but if I'm left with nothing to play, then maybe.

memories - it was outside of rllmuk over here - it's kind of list-y but it was just something I wanted to get out of my head. Also, it shouldn't need pointing out but my observations are subjective and some will be quick to tell me how much crap I'm talking, but I just wanted to spill some thoughts as a Bloodborne fan who didn't necessarily get on with DaS.

EDIT: also it was written before the release of DaS3 and I hadn't been following news of that game a whole lot...

Started playing this again after quite a long break having been pretty frustrated by the first couple of

Spoiler

hunters you come across in Old Yharnam. Had a few runs up to the point where you can fight them and then I realised I could just go around the back of them rather than fight them. I feel like I'd done a fair bit of exploring, but haven't yet found a portal back to the dream world. I did end up opening up a way back to the start of Old Yharnam though and also found the Blood Starved Beast, which I fought twice but haven't yet beaten, though I came pretty close the second time and am pretty confident I will do next time I have a decent session, so not as much of a challenge as those two hunters!

I forgot how good this game is.

Right I have kind of got the hang of the combat and can deal with all the standard enemies in central yarnham except for the two big dogs who I keep cheesing through the doorway in the house. However the CB is kicking my arse, I just summoned Father Gascoigne (by accident really I was intrigued by the glowing thing) and we almost got him together but the CB killed me when he had half a centimetre of health left. Bastard! It's a bit hard fighting such a big enemy I can't really tell what it is doing or if I'm hitting him very well just because of it's scale, all I can see are a bunch of flailing limbs.

I've just started Bloodborne and i've never played a Dark Souls game before. I don't really understand the save system.  Am I supposed to leg it back to the Hunters Sanctuary at the point where I bottle it and want to save my spoils?

I believe if you bring up the menu and go to Options (Settings) and Quit, it will keep your progress so that when you reload you'll be exactly where you were. However, if you want to retreat to safety and keep your blood echoes you need to either run back to the lantern and return to the Hunter's Dream or use a Bold Hunters Mark to warp back to that lantern...
