Bloodborne - GOTD edition

And YPQ down. Three or four attempts maybe? Once I learned to spot the clones and saw the wind-ups for certain attacks it wasn't so bad, plus I still had my rally runes/gems going on.

I think the hardest bosses in this whole chalice sequence have been PD, Defiled A, and Defiled WotOL. I would say AB but I cheesed him with poison, and I would say E:DotC but my technique didn't change too much from the main game version.

EDIT: also checked my trophy progress on PSNProfiles out of interest; I think I "just" need to get the other endings and unlock all weapons and tools? So there aren't really any "defeat the thing" trophies left, thankfully.

The jury is out on PD for the moment as I haven't been back for a rematch, but so far it has been defiled A, defiled KotOL and AB (who still isn't down) for me.

I also need to have a rematch with the SoY in the main game or a trip to Cainhurst.

Can't get the hang of video sharing.  I just beat PD in the chalice and after some miserable attempts got him down this time through a series of visceral attacks.  Tried saving the video but only got the final seconds and the Prey Slaughtered screen.  Never mind though as it was great to beat him and relatively quickly in that attempt - just two more bosses I think now (though AB still waits for me in the other chalice...)

I keep meaning to start some of the other games I've bought fairly recently but still can't put this down...

I was at a point where I have loads of options for where to go with my Waste of Skin this weekend; I had the Cursed Pthumeru, Lower Loran, and Isz chalices ready to go, the RH in the DLC area, and I hadn't been through the top of Mergo's loft yet either.

I decided to attempt the Cursed Pthumeru dungeon first, even though I have been dreading it (particularly as I had myself convinced that one of the bosses was PD). I made good headway through the dungeon - the first layer is mercifully short - until I got to the boss on layer 1, and I just couldn't keep it together; the boss has so much HP, that I kept just making a mistake eventually which ended up with me dying.

Feeling a bit dejected, I moved on to the Lower Loran chalice. Normal enemies were proving to be a bit of a nightmare, but for the most part this went quite smoothly. The first layer boss was just a Loran Silverbeast, no problem. The next layer boss was AB again. I was amazed by how quickly I had forgotten everything from the encounter in the Ailing Loran chalice, and it took me a good 10 or so attempts to get my head around his moveset again. Once I had him mapped out again, it was just a few goes until I got the execution down.

The next layer was quite tough (some enemies that I have barely ever seen before, including a dude with a flail), and the boss was one that I'm not really familiar with (Loran Darkbeast). Most of my characters have just muddled their way through this one, and I don't have a very good idea of his moveset. I threw myself at him for a while, without making much progress, and decided to have a change of scenery. Abandoning the Cursed dungeon was nagging at me, so I went back there.

I tried out a few different tactics on KotOL and found a couple of ways to get some extra damage in, which helped reduce the length of the fight, and I got the timing down for dodging his melee combos in the second phase. With all that down, it just took some calm and perseverance to finish him off.

The next floor was straightforward enough, and the boss is WotOL, who I have decided is one of my favourite bosses in the game. It's just such a good fight and he has a really good range of moves. Again, I practised some different approaches so that I could get more hits in. I found that the saw cleaver was better in short mode (due to the serrated bonus), and that it was possible to bait some of his bite attacks then run around to his legs and get some free hits in. This was a bit risky though, so I only did it during the first two phases of the fight. A side bonus of doing this is that he would be more likely to do his slam move, which lets you get some more free hits in. With all those new tricks under my belt, I toko him down in a few concentrated goes.

The final floor was a bit tricky in places (those bloody dogs again!), but I brute forced my way through it, and arrive at the final boss door. A quick glance at the guide and I misread that the final boss was BLB. Imagine my surprise when I walked through and it was A instead. I died.

I decided to leave it there for today. Still a lot left to do!

If you tap the Share button twice, you'll start recording from that point. You should see a little icon in the top left of the screen. Then once you're finished recording, press the Share button again one time. It should then ask you if you want to save what you've just recorded. :)

so...i found the blood starved beast then...

not done the fight properly as i had to quit as needed to do something, but am pleased so far. killed the guy on the tower, that was the main thing for me in old yarnham.

once im done here, i shall head to the forbidden forest i think.

the one thing about this game though is the way it springs bosses on you. i went down to the church where the best was & thought, oh its another werewolf thingy. oh no no no... ta dah, boss fight...

Thanks for the video tips.  Will try again next time.  Not sure what I was doing wrong but think I may have double tapped share hence recording only the last couple of seconds.  Currently enjoying exploring the Great Pthumeru Ihyll chalice at the moment and now had a couple of (failed) attempts at the hBB.  I was holding onto about 140k echoes when I stumbled in there but after the first couple of failed attempt managed to use a bold hunter mark to get out and level up.

You start to be able to read the landscape for that sort of thing!

It's kind of funny; I've seen people comment in LPs - and I've done the same with my first playthrough of the base game and DLC - where they see a long empty passageway and a massive open door leading to an "empty" room with no other exits, and go "yeah there's a fucking boss in there"

EDIT: I mentioned this to noob on twitter, but when BSB pulls his right (I think) arm back before the big swing, it's quite a big wind-up and can lead to some easy gun counters if you're willing to take the risk. I went back to the chalice version just to get a feel for the battle again and you still need a few tries to get the timing down but it's do-able.

I remember doing a little 'oh shit' dance the first time I happened upon BSB beast for the first time.

It's probably the least sign posted boss fight in the game. Like noob says, you just think 'OK, another werewolf to fuck up' and then the boss health bar pops up and it's 'oh shit oh shit oh shit'

Today, I was having some trouble with the

BSB in the blood cave

when I hit him with a jumping attack in a narrow space and he fell through the map and died. Very anti-climactic!

Then I soloed LtHB... admittedly after he'd soloed me a bunch of times!

LtHB has been having a good time murdering me, too. I spent the best part of an hour last night just trying to learn his moveset on my Waste of Skin character, but I feel like I'm not making even slight progress. With most bosses you can pretty quickly get a handle on most of their moves and get an idea of how you're going to take them down, but with him it's just not happening. I probably need to go back to him on a properly levelled character, just so I can survive his attacks long enough to actually learn his patterns. At the moment I'm dying within the first 30 seconds of entering the arena, if that.

I'm tempted to give in and just focus on clearing the main game, but I'd like to have a shot at OoK and LM.

Johnny, are you struggling with the first phase or the second? I could write up some tips for you when I get back later this evening.

In other news, Cursed & Defiled dungeon complete. Turns out I had no idea how to fight A properly in the third phase without taking hits, so I ended up taking loads of time experimenting with what she does (which took many, many deaths), and discovered that her jump has a limited range it can move from it's start point and it will always end up facing relative to where you were when she jumped, so you can use that to your advantage to position yourself to get some hits in when she lands.

Now I just have Pthumeru Ithyll, Isz, and the last boss of Lower Loran to deal with, in terms of chalices. :scared:

Thanks, Polmon, but I think I've given up trying to beat him and the rest of the DLC - it's just too hard, and I've reached the point where it's become less of a fun challenge and more of an endurance test.

I must admit I underestimated just how tough some of the bosses would be on a low-level character, and have been really struggling towards the end of the run.

Case in point, after giving up on LtHB last night I thought I would go and beat the final bosses quickly and wrap the run up, but didn't anticipate how difficult GtFH could be. I was up until about 2am failing to beat him. One of my many, many deaths:

I do at least feel that I have a grasp of what I'm doing in this battle - I just need to stop jumping directly into his line of fire. I've got better at avoiding his blunderbuss but now when I get him down to phase 3 I usually get caught by the delay on his pistol.

I see that Epicnamebro posted a video asking his viewers whether he should do a playthrough, apparently he didn't like the game initially but is warming to it.

The game does definitely grow on you and improves, especially when it starts giving you new "abilities" and you can see where S&S and Souls differ  (apart from the obvious difference).

I'm certainly enjoying it (as I've said in the other thread) and I have a love/hate relationship with 2D platformers, I fail to finish any of them as they tend to exceed my coordination abilities but I feel I might actually finish this one and go back for more (NG+ etc..).

I watched the video, and it didn't do much for me. Is it cheap?

I'm a couple of bosses down,  with two other bosses discovered,  with multiple routes opening up, lots of neat shortcuts,  a few decent new weapons discovered, and am having a fine old time.

It's extremely  Souls,  with similar difficulty,  although the restriction of the 2D  results in simpler mechanics and therefore simpler combat solutions.

I'm not hugely keen on the graphics though - the characters are a bit shit and the dark areas have a junky,  high contrast,   Blighttown look. And whilst there may be more colourful areas later in the game (I hope)   the dull,  washed out palette of the first half dozen or do areas is pretty  boring.

But the gameplay is excellent so far and that's the bottom line. I don't usually play metroidvania games but suspect  this one will keep me occupied till DS3.

I think you'd like it Davros..

so, a little more progress today after i left playing it a few days.

decided to pop on down to see the blood starved beast, you know, just for a chat between friends. smashed his face in. i think the fight was over in about 2 minutes in the end.

then i popped off to the forbidden forest finally. got quite a bit in, invaded (i was using a bell early on) and got murdered just out of the water. bugger...

bit lost but REALLY enjoying it.

Played the board game at GAMA. It's fucking brutal and awesome. So, just as you'd expect. It was only a *very* advanced prototype, so no art or anything yet, but Eric Lang really kept the feel of the Chalice Runs in there. Release date is hoped to be in the summer for GenCon (the big US board games show), so August.

As I mentioned on twitter, now that BSB is down you might want to look into finding the Radiant Sword Hunter badge, which unlocks LHB in the messenger shop. I highly recommend it due to the moveset and transformed mode, but there are plenty of other viable weapons :)
