I've been ploughing through the DLC - to get it done before Dark Souls 3 -  and I've been loving this big DLC chunk.

I'm about level 100 and now up to the 'OoK' and this boss is an absolute mother fucker, and the first one since  E:DotC to give me trouble and right now I can't seem to kill the fucker.

Any tips really? or just get gud?

He's very open to being parried, and if you equip Oedon Writhe and Blood Rapture runes they gain a massive recovery boost during his first form. The attack where he rushes at you and drags his placenta along the ground I find to be the easiest to parry. Dangerous if you miss, but you can shoot him pretty much any time during the animation and he will stagger.

Fighting him in the water also helps. His lightning AoE attack during the second form always starts from the same spot in the centre of the arena and then spreads out in waves, so if you're in the water you have loads of time and space to avoid it.

I didn't get much of a chance to play this yesterday, just a short evening session where I worked through the depth 2 chalices on my waste of skin run and then ran around haplessly in the Hunter's Nightmare in search of upgrade materials and my favourite weapon, the beasthunter saif. I didn't fancy my chances against Ludwig with my +6 cleaver so I decided to call it a night.

Finished off my Lower Loran Root Chalice last night. Really enjoyed fighting the Pthumeran Elder again (the one with the firey crossbow), and got the best Clawmark Rune and a Lost Tonitrus for my troubles.

I've said it before, but I really love the Chalice Dungeons. I can see myself playing the random ones for pleasure every now and then for years to come.

I haven't had a chance to post an update for a few days now, but both the Lower Hintertomb and Ailing Loran chalices have now fallen to my Waste of Skin.

Lower Hintertomb was quite ticky; there were a few rooms which had enemies or combinations of enemies which caused a lot of problems for me (there was on with two of the Undead Giants with cannons, I died loads of times there before deciding to just sack it off and leave the giants alone). The bosses were a bit more straightforward - the first was just easy, the second took me a few goes to learn what was safe to do and what was not, and the third took a lot of goes as I was getting one-shotted my a lot of his moves, so I had to spend some time learning his moveset. Here's the bosses;

Spoiler

Ailing Loran was something else entirely. There were loads of bell ringers summoning spiders, some really evilly placed enemy combinations, and generally was really hard to get through. There was also a hunter on the second (iirc?) floor with the beast claws, who totally caught me off guard. I died more times here than I did on all the other chalices put together. The bosses were something else too. With a normal character, I wouldn't have any problems with the first boss - BPS; but not having much margin for error meant I had to change up my approach and I could only go for really safe hits and interupts. I died quite a few times to him before I got things right. Next up was BSB again, easy right? I've done him loads of times. I still died a few times as I kept getting hit while eagerly chasing him down after a dodge.

Finally though, there was AB - definitely the hardest thing in this run so far. Most of his moves were a 1 hit kill, and others did enough stun that a follow up couldn't be avoided. I was really struggling to spot which of his moves were which, as some had much slower start ups than others and this led to me dodging into attacks instead of through them. I quickly found that dodging to my left / his right was safe for almost everything he did, but then had to rewire my instincts and train myself to dodge to my right when he did his running punch, as being a fraction too early while dodging left would see me get instant killed. While it didn't take me as many retries as some other bosses had done, this was definitely the hardest learning curve, and one of the most satisfying victories I've had in this game.

Here's the Loran bosses;

Next up is the Cursed & Defiles Pthumeru chalice. I might hold off on starting that and dive into the DLC instead - I'm not sure yet.

I refuse to watch any of those videos. If I've not seen it, then it hasn't happened which is fine by me as even at 50 vitality I've died to AB in ailing loran far more than I'd like to admit.

You can kill him at level 4? Nope, it's never happened and I'm not accepting it.

I'm still stuck on Amygdala in the chalice so I decided to call for reinforcements and felt relieved when two people turned up to help.  All was going well and I felt sure I was going to make it this time.  I don't know what happened but then I was killed by the laser beams.  Up until that point in all of the attempts I'd NEVER been killed by the laser, being able to just was out of the way.  Argh!

maybe next time...

I quite often get summoned to help with cursed and defiled Amy. Usually not very successfully, she's harder to anticipate with more people. Nearly killed her yesterday for someone but then they died.

It's definitely one of those bosses I'd like to be better at helping with. Recently I've been trying to stay in front of her to discourage her jumping (which is far harder to dodge with more than one person) and waiting till she does something that lowrs her head. At which point I bundle in and give it a quick running R2 with my boomhammer\wheel\hmls depending on what I'm using at the time and then dash out again.

That and lots of ex gloves, they're a little puny on my current character though (50 arcane only).

Not sure if there's a better approach?

I think you'll probably find Amy easier to fight on your own, so you can more easily keep track of what she's doing. Just take a really defensive approach, wait for her to lower her head after her attack chain, and chip away at her. She doesn't really have any ranged attacks beyond the lasers and her leap attack which are both fairly easy to avoid (though I still get hit by the latter more than I should), so as long as you don't get greedy and know when to back away after attacking you should be safe.

I use the cleaver against her in its extended form so I can get at her head more easily and play largely unlocked to allow me to roll and to keep the camera from going haywire while I'm close to her.

Spoiler

This is in a cursed Pthumeru Ihyll dungeon. Possibly not the best example, as the steps in this arena make it a much different and much easier fight than the one in the defiled dungeon.

I'm usually ok up until the point she rips her arms out.  Then given the arena is smaller I'm either caught against a wall and hit by the extended smash or too far away and can't get a hit in before she gets back up again.  Since it takes a while to get to that stage it quickly gets frustrating and I need a break.

im using LHB so usually manage hits to the head beforehand and can usually trigger a visceral attack but then it becomes a matter of time before I run out of vials without landing any further hits.

YEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS FUCK YOU DEFILED A!

I honestly never, ever thought I would beat that, but it turns out that you can be really lame and wait for the unsafe moves and (for the most part) you'll be fine. A was up there with GTFH and FG as one of the biggest challenges in the base game for me, so I knew this would be hard but the jump attacks were ruining me. I heard a lot of people say that staying still helps you avoid the jump attacks, but this only really worked for me when I trained myself into expecting the jump attack every time and standing still way in advance. Aside from that, the move where A slams its arms down takes an age to recover from so LHB's overhead deals with that fairly capably, and the phase with the extra range wasn't too much of a problem as long as I stuck to one side of the boss.

No clip to show unfortunately; I tried to save it retrospectively but it starts a few minutes into the fight (just to give you an idea of how long I took  ) Anyway, I now have the Great Pthumeru Ihyll (sp) chalice, which I think is where things get even sillier, so that'll be fun.

You must have given me the inspiration I needed as I managed to beat A tonight.  Took forever as she rarely did the slam move leaving the head exposed, preferring the lasers or shaking the goo around.  Once the arms came off though I played it safe(ish) sticking to the tail like glue, though had a few hairy moments misjudging the jumps.

need some jelly for the next chalice, but realised there was another I hadn't finished.  Wasn't sure why until I ran into my old friend the abhorrent beast.  Had one attempt and that's me for the night.  Pulverised again so may come back a bit later.

I did not have fun times with AB. Given your performance here, clearly we are in the presence of greatness. Kudos.

i have been nerfed by Amelia three or four times this week now. This weekend, that bitch is getting my axe in her face for the last time (well, in her legs)...

possibly tonight. will be streaming too. I have been using my bell and the last time we got her down to about 10% of health. she just lost it and went bananas at us.

Okay, PD is a huuuuge dick. I keep coming really close to beating him with my rally setup, but one bad move and I die near-instantaneously. I don't know if it's one three/four-hit combo immediately followed by another or a seven-hit combo of death but some of those strings are nuts.

Is that the guy with the scythe? I fought him again last night, and got killed by him a lot. In the end though I just fished for viscerals, and down he went.

The very same. To be honest I haven't really been trying for viscerals because my rally nonsense serves me well for about 90% of the battle and then I get unlucky with his combos. That said, those swings have an obvious rhythm that looks like it should be counter-able, so it's worth a try.

This has been the hardest bit of progress for my Waste of Skin so far - if each death took any kind of toll on the poor girl, there'd be nothing left of her by now.

I've managed to make my way through the first section of the HN area of the DLC, but not without a significant amount of deaths. The first unique hunter wasn't too much of a problem once I cottoned on to his evasive tactics, but the second (in the cave) was a proper bell-end. He took a lot of deaths to figure out a workable approach, which was a little cheesey, but I don't mind that was he was just totally full of shit himself. Total jokes at what happened at the end of the fight. After that I cleared out the rest of the cave (sweet, sweet chunks), then settled in to work on the first DLC boss. An oooooooh boy was he a doozey.

I'd fought him quite a lot on many of my other characters and I knew his first phase really well, but had never been particularly consistent on the second phase, and that pattern followed here. Once I had the first phase down to about 90% consistent, I still found myself getting owned either very quickly in phase 2, or just dying from a mistimed dodge before I could whittle down his health. Or he would back into a corner and do Moonlight Onslaught (which makes it unavoidable), because he's a dick. After being stuck on him for a few evenings and not making much progress with phase 2, I eventually decided to change up my approach and use Beast Blood Pellets. I noticed fairly quickly that using one right at the start of the fight was a bit of a waste, as it would inevitably wear off just after phase 2 begins, but I found using one at about the 75% health mark was good as it gave me enough hits to get the beasthood bar filled a bit, without taking too much time (he would usually collapse at around the 65%-70% health mark). After that, it was just a matter of getting some good RNG in the second phase, and not fucking up a dodge.

As a bonus, I managed to record probably the most bullshittiest way I've died so far in this run (see below).

Full play list here for anyone interested.

I think I might take a little detour and have a look at the Cursed chalice next, as the RH scares me a bit (especially with the thought of LM approaching - she's a bit of a boogeyman for me).

That was close!  I'm tackling PD too.  First time I was dead in seconds, next time got really close but couldn't get the space to heal and it was a bit of a messy finish.  Will get him next time.  My time against A in the chalice paid off as I got her first time in NG+ followed by DBP.  I'm definite;y enjoying the second play through having visited all these areas before and still finding new things.

right. made a little more progress. got to the hill at the church in hemwick. was alone, no bullets and only 4 blood vials so didnt fancy taking on the ogre & 3 witches alone.

had a lot of echoes so just went and levelled up.

LOVING this game!!!

To my shame, I just ran through the cave with the gatling gun hunter and BSB on my Waste of Skin build. Managed to collect all the chunks and items in one go and plan never to return. That hunter drove me mad enough on my first playthrough.

Anyway, I put a couple of hours into my WoS playthrough this morning, the first chance I've had since last weekend, but I didn't really make any progress. Probably because I was tired and a bit hungover, but I was playing comically badly. Managed to run off the rooftops on the way to ML not once but twice. Then, while working through the Lower Pthumeru chalice I got stuck for a while on a tricky approach to one of the levers - I eventually managed to clear the area of its bell-ringing maiden and spiders, but forgot to pull the fucking lever before warping back to the lantern.

The first couple of bosses in the Lower Hintertomb and Lower Pthumeru chalices went down in the end. I think I'll have to wait til next weekend now before I get a chance to carry on. After I've done the depth 3 chalices, I'm probably going to just focus on clearing the main game.
