Another day, another boss....

  Reveal hidden contents

Got to TOR, after the bell-ringers doing my head in and a torrid time with the three hunters in the chapel. In the end I managed lure them away from one another and whittle them down at my own pace.

Anyway, the boss was horribly grotesque but it seemed I'd out-levelled the thing, as I just waded in and carelessly slashed away until it was dead. Seemed kinda weird, but a welcome relief after the effort it took to get there in the first place.

Yeah I just fought TOR and took him down 1st try. I think he's pretty much the only boss in the game I've done that to. WoH took me 2 goes I think and Cleric Beast went down on the third attempt.

Spoiler

TOR's attacks are quite telegraphed and easy to dodge. I went and took out the bell ringers first as I assumed that they can make him stronger? Not sure to be honest. The only attack of his that gave me any mild difficulty was that weird 'vomit' thing he does! Eurgh! If you stand in it, it's toxic. Other than that, I just circled him and laid into him when I got the chance. Gross boss but great design - born from the paleblood moon. Another great cut scene.

just got this today.

got to light my first lamp, and just wondering about.

i haven't a clue what i am doing, any tips gladly taken :)

Another hunter to the slaughter ;)

The obligatory Vaati vid to get you started.

This one is a bit more spoilery but will really help with some stuff you will likely miss on your first go. You've got about 60 hours of game to go so don't worry about spoiling too much.

Both of these really helped me to understand the world and the mechanics after I nearly gave up several times.

It's now in my top 3 games ever.

Don't give up we're here to help.

Edit: ugh, stupid iPhone not embedding video bollocks. Can someone oblige, cheers

Must be a great feeling to have finally done it!  I felt for you at the end there as could have gone horribly wrong in the lava!  I'm not looking forward to fighting LtfV in NG+ after the first time around.

I got past the Keeper last night so some more exploring was in order.  Amazing how much better you can do when you are patient and not going wading in swinging the sword wildly.

Actually, despite my ALL CAPS posting, I was less elated than I might have been. It was the previous, failed attempt, that really got the blood pumping. It was basically a re-run of the vid I posted, only at the end I died with barely a scratch needed to finish him off. Afterwards I was shaking (not for the first time in these games), but I had a little break and when I tried again I thought "Ok, I've got this now", and down he went on the next try.

It it is a massive relief though. The impact this game has in you is incredible.

Oh yeah, and only in watching that video back did I discover a big thing that I'd been doing wrong in his final phase. I'd been locking onto his head, which pulls you into his path when he's doing that circling monster mash. Lock onto the body (as I happened to do at another point) and the lock on naturally makes you stay to his left while attacking.

Good to know for next time...

Good tip as it's that final phase that was repeatedly getting me.

Good to have got him the next time after getting so close.  I always find that if i almost get a boss on one try that means every single one after that is a disaster.  Not sure if it is the frustration or that a close fight does sap the concentration but I'm usually flapping about until I take a break and go and do something else.

I think it was the break that did it actually. When I say I was shaking, I really do mean I was visibly shaking! I held my hand up to show my missus and she insisted I turn it off (but I sneaked it back on after she went to bed). So if I'd tried again straight away I reckon it would have been disastrous, as you say.

It's weird how afterwards you find yourself thinking "Why did I find that so hard?", when only a couple of attempts previously you thought you'd never beat it. In fact think we need the "Five Stages of Bloodborne Bosses":

Stage 1 - EXCITEMENT

"OMG look at this cool boss. Teh grafix! Teh sounds! Teh...YOU DIED"

Stage 2 - FEAR

"Get away from me, get away from me, oh my god he hits so hard, c'mon heal, HEAL! Run awaaaaayyy...YOU DIED"

Stage 3 - ACCEPTANCE

"I'm in this for the long haul. I'll just keep plugging away. Yes, I'll die, perhaps dozens of times, but that's fine"

Stage 4 - DESPERATION

"Fuck's sake! This is impossible! Literally impossible! Maybe I'll try a different weapon. With different blood gems. And different runes. And different clothes. And I'll try all my items. Even pebbles."

Stage 5 - ECSTASY

"DRINK MY PISS! DRINK MY PISS AND EAT MY SHIT AS YOU DIE, DIE IN AGONY YOU ABOMINATION HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

Ok, maybe the last one is just me...

I know this isn't the most important thing, but what is that hat

Fashion, actually, is totally the most important thing.

It's the hat of the Keeper of the Old Lords from the chalices.  You can buy it from the insight shop after beating him. (her? god knows)

Ugggghhhh, don't like where I am now.

Spoiler

Nightmare of Mensis. It's just a pain in the arse at the moment. I can deal with the weird frenzy hill, the spiders aren't much bother, but then I get murdered by that hunter every single time. Barely make a scratch on him.

Might just leg it past him and see if there's a lantern or something. Feels wrong, though.

i did have a bloodborne dream last night...

so i played a little more, and got a little further this time. got past the group of them around the bonfire anf through to the next bit with the giant (ish) dude. killed him and the guys above then went upstairs, found a bridge i think and two dog things. killed one, the second killed me. bums.

bit lost tbh, but its fun!

That Rosmarinus hunter a right nob-end. With a Waste of Skin character the Rosmarinus will pretty much one-shot you. I ended up cheesing him as I couldn't be arsed trying to fight him properly.

Last nights exploits: lots and lots of deaths exploring UCW, did the first boss there, then moved on to NoM, where I suffered lots and lots of deaths while exploring. I did do MHotN on my first go though, so that was good. I also found some lovely gems; got a good drop from the Winter Lanterns, and found one on the bridge that I hadn't spotted / remembered to get since my first couple of playthroughs, which was great.

Vids:

Spoiler

Tonight I'm going to have a stab at A, then E, and then go back into the chalices (if I do both of the former!).

Seriously that whole area NoM can just fuck off.

Spoiler

If you're not getting frenzied to death in the first section (which I just run past because there's no point fighting anything as you get killed way too easily), you get trapped between that hunter and the spiders behind that you ran past. I can't find a way past the hunter. I run down the stairs and end up falling off the broken floor constantly. How do you cheese him? I don't know where to go past the hunter. There's shitloads of enemies. Help!

Really? I ran down the stairs to the right and couldn't see any lift at all. Hmm. I'll have to have another look but I've tried several times already to no avail :s

a little progress for me. i managed to open a gate to the left of the first lamp and some doors off the bridge with the two dogs. only way to go now seems to be in the depths? met a guy who gave me some free stuff too.

inching a little more each time i play. got stuck for ages on the bit near the first lamp with everyone around the bonfire.

Well done. The depths isn't the only way you can go. If you're feeling brave, explore past the dogs on the bridge. If you want to try and kill the dogs, you might want to try luring them down to the house doorway as they're too big to get through and you can try picking them off one by one as they get stuck in the doorway. Remember, you can use the environment in this game to try and swing the odds in your favour, especially if you're outnumbered.

I just realised that I missed exploring the NF:

Spoiler

I went straight to the second floor of the lecture building by carrying straight on from the lamp after I defeated TOR and inspecting the mummy. But I gather you can get to the first floor by using the tonsil stone and getting picked up by that Amygdala near Yahar'gul? So I might go back and try to clear that area as there is some nice loot around the lecture theatre and, of course, the spooky outside areas.

I found NoM quite tricky for my level but then again I don't suppose it matters what order you do stuff in really. Having said that, I think NF is probably more suited to my level right now.

You were doing really well on stream; I had to nip off for a bit so I didn't see everything :(

That shortcut will help a bit, and whilst the bridge isn't the only available route, it's worth going there just to get 1 insight and open up levelling at the Hunter's Dream. :D

Adventures update: I decided I wanted the top level Blood Rapture rune, so the Bloody Crow needed to be tackled. I died a fair few times trying to remember what the best approach was, and watched my fight against him from my first run to see what spacing etc I was using, and got him down much more easily than before. When he starts throwing Numbing Mists at you, you can just get a free hit in each time - it makes him so much easier.

Next I went for A, and died a couple of times from being a bit too complacent. Took it down fairly easily in the end. From there I went on to E in UCW, and did her first go. She becomes trivial when you combine Bolt Paper and Beast Pellets. I even forgot to equip the Beast rune too!

After that I went into the Lower Pthumeru chalice, where I got absolutely reamed. Constantly. For hours. I eventually did the Merciless Watchers redux, after many many failed attempts, and costed fairly easily through the next layer (which was nice as I needed to bank the echoes to replace all the vials I'd spunked in the first layer). I left things at the boss for Layer 2, where I will resume later today.

Here's the documentary footage of the events as they unfolded:
