Made a bit of progress in Yahar'gul (Stage 2) last night but then came up against:

Those three hunters in the chapel. For some reason all three aggro'ed me at once and despite getting two of them down to under half health each, they killed me. I guess I need to funnel them one at at a time? Maybe even as far back as the chapel lamp. Doesn't seem a fair fight otherwise.

Anyway, it's quite a fun but brutal section. I worked out that you need to kill the bell ringers to stop the respawns but I didn't realise that I missed a key to Upper Cathedral Ward which I will go back for later today. I know where it is now.

Aye, I skillfully kited them back to the lamp (ran away). Their path finding has an issue with the door but they can get through (I think it's if they do theit equivalent of a charged attack) but I still got to fight them 1 on 1 this way and they're fine then.

As Sood says, Rom is a weird one. I killed him fairly easily on normal and one-shot him in the Chalice Dungeons. However, she often comes up as the hardest boss in Youtube 'Bosses in order of difficulty' videos and whatnot.

I clear spiders in phase 1, use bolt paper and go to town. I then ignore and dodge the spiders in phase 2 and 3. Try and be in medium range to avoid her using rocks from the sky attack, run in and out according to underground rock attack, AOE and her melee. Don't get too carried away with damaging the boss as spiders will be moving to jump on you, quick combo, move and reassess.

Yeah I saw a video where ENB defeated two of them this way because only one of them seemed to occasionally come in through the door way. I'll try it.

Nequests, I had trouble with Rom but beat him eventually by sheer persistence and also knowing exactly when he was going to do which attack and dodging/running out of the way. The fight requires a certain amount of patience and sometimes it's good to just hit him once when you have a brief window, run out and repeat again when you see an opportunity. The last time I fought him, I barely got hit as I seemed to have mastered dodging and finding attack opportunities. Also, I only bothered killing the spiders in Phase 1. He does have three phases but I only let him get to Phase 2.

The other side of that door is in the Cathedral Ward, down that spiral staircase near the Church Giant with the ball and chain. There are videos where people have lodged Shining Coins in the door and you can see them from both sides.

I don't know why you can't open it. Would have made for a neat shortcut.

Apparently it opened in the beta.

Fucking game. I was up late last night because of LtfV, and then couldn't sleep afterwards. Gah!

The main reason is because I had one last crack using the Threaded Cane. I was thinking that the sheer number of hits you can get in might mean I can stagger him through accumulated damage, or if not then at least I could use rally to survive going toe to toe with him.

This worked quite well, and I was able to get him to his final phase a few times, but man, I just struggle so much once there's lava everywhere.

I generally beat him thanks to rally; I used the small LHB and got a load of hits in to save spending vials. That said, I don't know if I really boosted rally that much (with blood gems and caryll runes); I only really started doing that on my numerous OoK rematches... :)

Killed the bloody thing! The hit-and-run suggestion did the trick, though the little guys still caused me more grief than I'd have liked.

Also had a crack at ML, but made a mess of it both times due to being careless and too greedy when on the attack, so I'll leave it for now.

Rom should be called the great divider.

50% of people find him the easiest boss in the game.

50% hate him more than any other fucker int he game.

Sadly I'm in the latter category

Team hate here too!

Well done! Yeah ML is a bit of a pain. I've left him for the time being too to concentrate on getting through the return trip to Yahar'gul.

Spoiler

Managed to kill the three hunters in the chapel in one go without dying last night, after 2 failed attempts. First of all, I levelled up my LHB to +8 with all the blood chunks I found. Then, I sneaked up to the one on the stairs, backstabbed him and then visceral attack which took about half of his health. Then managed to cannon + bone marrow ash him and swipe him to finish him off. By this point, the other two had engaged so I ran back up the stairs, and past the broken lamp but out the opposite door to where I came in. I then managed to aggro one of those casket eye thingies which scared the shit out of me as it was the first time I'd encountered one!

So I ran down a narrow path with the eye surprise and two hunters chasing me. Eventually got to a dead end near a shortcut I hadn't opened yet. For some reason there was only one hunter following me now so I faced off and killed him fairly easily. The other one was behind the shortcut door that I hadn't opened. So I stabbed him through the door, opened it and finished him off. Was a bit of a jammy fight for me but I swung the odds in my favour which you kind of have to do when it's not a fair fight in the first place. I tried to use the environment to my advantage which is a fair and reasonable tactic I think!

Totally. Nicely done. And it must have shit you right up running into one of those Cramped Caskets!

Thanks. Yeah it genuinely shit me up in a 'what the fuck is that?!' way. Just when you think the game can't get any more grotesque, it pushes the envelope even further. I've no doubt there's much worse to come.

I think I eventually managed rom solo in the main game when I decided to ignore the spiders, but with quite a few attempts.  Called for help eventually in the chalice.  I was busy trying to whittle down the spiders when the other guy took rom down in no time at all.

According to the guide, fire and bolt paper have little effect. I've been buffing LHB with the Empty Phantasm Shell, but it doesn't really help either, and it uses bullets, which I'm now hanging onto so I can blast him with A Call Beyond at the end of the fight.

OHB also uses bullets. I've tried it though. I even tried Lead Elixirs for the first time. I was quite hopeful for a while, as they really do deflect a lot of the attacks. But you're so slow while you've got one active.

And yeah, I know about standing to his left. Eventually he flips direction though and slams me into paste in one hit. Or I dodge him but end up standing in lava.

I did beat him eventually on NG, but I think other than maybe Kalameet in Dark Souls it's the boss I've died to the most in all of these games. I reckon it's at least 100 attempts now.

Been too busy with stuff lately, but I'll think I'll return to my NG++ game tonight and try to kill LtfV. I'll probably be rusty as fuck and die a lot.

As an aside, are you gonna do a post in the MUK GotY thread, Davros? :)

I think before release if you had told me that a FromSoft game that takes Souls as it's foundation (and, admittedly, builds fresh new gameplay and atmosphere on top) would be my GotY I'd tell you to fuck off because I'd never find a game like that enjoyable... but then I played it. And then I played it again to try a new build. And then I played it again for the DLC and chalice dungeoning. And I'm still revisiting it for co-op fun...

I'm still going to be terrible at Dark 3, mind.

Another day, another boss....

Spoiler

Got to TOR, after the bell-ringers doing my head in and a torrid time with the three hunters in the chapel. In the end I managed lure them away from one another and whittle them down at my own pace.

Anyway, the boss was horribly grotesque but it seemed I'd out-levelled the thing, as I just waded in and carelessly slashed away until it was dead. Seemed kinda weird, but a welcome relief after the effort it took to get there in the first place.

It is nice to come off the back of a difficult boss fight to one that is easier to get through.  I had the same experience with that particular boss which was a surprise as on first look it looks like it will be a slog.

I'm still plodding my way through the chalices and have burned my way through my vial stash fighting

Spoiler

The Keeper of the Old Lords.

on one attempt I got him down to a minute amount of health - barely visible in the health bar, and I got greedy and went for one too many hits meaning he killed me in one hit.

havent got close since and I've been getting increasingly frustrated as I know I can do it.

So finally got around to completing this....And I'm none the wiser!

I hope the other endings make more sense, but I'd be surprised.

Still, enjoyed it none the less.

Roll on Dark Souls III, hopefully better then DSII.

The Keeper can be tough. It's good to get some practice against her, however, as you'll soon be fighting her in the lower depth chalices as a standard enemy - where she roams with a pair of hunting dogs!

I use the beast roar and then whack them on the head.

Managed to get a couple of hours on this last night, and made a bit of progress with my Waste of Skin (playlist here). Did Rom, TOR and ML - the first two I managed on my first attempt too, which was nice.

Videos (spoilered for length):

Spoiler

Tonight I'm going to have a go at A, and MHotN, before diving back into the depth 3 chalices.

just got this today.

got to light my first lamp, and just wondering about.

i haven't a clue what i am doing, any tips gladly taken :)

Use pebbles to lure enemies away one at a time. Don't fight them in a big group otherwise you'll get massacred. Learn to dodge and roll to avoid attacks.

You can parry enemies by shooting them with your gun as they're about to attack you. This staggers them and allows you to perform a visceral attack for huge damage if you press R1 in time. You can also sneak up on them and backstab them. This will stagger them and, again, if you press R1 then you can do a visceral attack.

Have fun and try not to get creeped out by all the moaning and wailing!

If you're familiar with Souls this will be obvious, but...it's a good idea to try various moves - rolling, backsteps, various attacks - and seeing how much stamina they use. This way if you're in a jam you can quickly see if you can have enough stamina to dash back to safety. Also (again, possibly obvious), weapons will deteriorate with use but if you stay on top of repairs they're not a big deal.

Also also, when locked on to an enemy (click the right stick when facing one and a dot will appear on them) you can dash, but otherwise you can roll (circle and a direction). Both have their uses in various situations!
