Bloodborne - GOTD edition

That farming spot is insane, at NG+5 you can earn a million echoes there in about half an hour.

For Rom, my strategy is quite complex. First I kill the first wave of spiders (never attack their front, just the sides or back), then I attack with heavy attacks carefully whilst she's not attacking. When you do enough damage she'll teleport, but a charged attack can interrupt that if you do enough damage, meaning she stays and you can do almost as much again.

Once she teleports she'll be at either half health or more likely about 2/3 if you didn't get the interrupt. Either way, the damage while she teleports is huge so try to hit her then.

Once she's attacking I ignore the spiders and move towards her right side (moving forwards and left from my perspective). Move towards her, if she fires the distance meteors dodge forwards and left. When you reach the spiders dodge forwards and left. Have your weapon in its fastest, lightest form, buff it with bolt paper (or whatever you have).

Dodge close, hit her in the side, and dodge away if she starts doing any animation at all. Stay locked on at all times. As you hit her side she'll turn to face you, so if you keep attacking the same side she'll rotate and keep the bulk of the spiders on the other side of her.

If you're stuck for echoes, use it as an excuse to explore the chalice dungeons. You gain massive amounts in the lower depth dungeons. Now I've stopped levelling and have bought just about every item I need, I'm constantly running around with a supply of millions of echoes for which I've no use.

Though for some reason it still bothers me when I lose them. I've become oddly attached to my ever-growing pile of unneeded echoes. It's like a high score at the top of the screen.

Tried it again, solo. Attempt 14. No dice. He had under a quarter health left but I tried to roll out of the way of his melee attack but was surrounded by too many spiders and got squashed. Sigh. Gonna give the game a break I think. I really don't have the patience for this.

Appreciate all the help and advice though.

Taking a break is very sensible really. I often find I come back and wonder why I was struggling.

This seems to come up every time people meet Rom, it's such a weird boss. I've fought her now about 5 times I think, and it was only in this latest NG++ run that I took more than 1 or 2 tries. I know that doesn't help you much Coltrane, but I do wonder what people are doing differently that makes the boss so hard for them.

Here's my 2nd attempt on my original play through the game:

I don't know why I threw those molotovs. Just trying stuff out I guess.

And my 2nd playthrough, killed on first attempt:

I don't know if anything in there is of help to you, because if it's not clicking for you it's not clicking. But I would say patience is the key, waiting for an opening, and then getting out again before you get surrounded.

So plot thoughts. I'm so confused...

Spoiler

What the hell

So the Beachthing washed up dead. And is called Kos...the then Gerkin (I think) talked about it and heading back to the sea...when I killed it's Orphan? And it just happily frolicked in the sea?

So it was a pregnant great one, that hadn't yet lost it's child, died (somehow), washed up and got dissected? And it's child died with it? Or lived on inside and died later due to the hunters?

There's a red moon when you fight Kos - but it's gone when you killed it...

What's the black man - why did it say Nightmare slain?

So if they knew Kos was dead why was Microtash talking to it, beseeching it for help?

Menses Ritual/Rom turning into a Spider happen (I think) chronologically after the fishing village...so how did Kos do it if dead?

Spoiler

I'm so chuffin confused.

MWN tonight (which I believe is nearly the last boss). I've given up down the well. I can't even get one down and there's another waiting to jump in.

In counter to Davros' expert Rom take downs, here's my first ever attempt at her, so brief it fits into a gif.

I don't think Rom is that tough, but it's very easy to die against her if you slip up and make a stupid mistake. Her Arcane attacks shouldn't hit you as they're clearly telegraphed and easy to avoid but when they do they hit really hard.

"They can be gun parried" and "Hexx can gun parry them" are two different things ;)

I only have 3 bones, so I've held off using them. Might give it ago. These 2 better drop something amazing though!

As I understand it when the game ends (which I think is soon) it rolls straight into NG+ right? Do I keep all my chalices/materials so I can carry those on even if I don't play through the game itself. I'm tempted to push through and see if there's anymore lore hints, but not to extent I don't want to progress in the game.

Well, I think my problem is more than likely down to patience. I think you've hit the nail on the head there. I tend to panic when she's on low health and try to run in for the kill which results in me not paying proper attention to what the spiders are doing or timing it right to avoid one of Rom's attacks. If I approach the fight differently and try to be a lot more patient, I'll probably be more successful. I appreciate you posting the vid's though. I'll have a look and see if it helps

As I mentioned above, I tried one of the chalice dungeons (pthumeru thingy) for a change of pace. The Undead Giant kicked my arse!

I have the Tonitrus at +5 so I could go and level that up some more. Also, I'm Level 60 and already have about 1050 hit points. My END is at 21 so I probably could do with levelling that some more.

Absolutely. As we've discussed a few times, and as Broker mentions above, if your VIT isn't high enough most of the attacks can one shot you, even a head slam from the baby spiders. You can see at one point in the 2nd vid I posted I nearly got wiped out, but fortunately I had enough VIT to survive.

That mirrors my first attempt! I didn't know what was going on and got two shotted by a spider!

You're right in that Rom doesn't seem that tough and for that reason i think it's easy to get arrogant and try too many hits close up before backing out the way of an AoE. I think that's my main issue. More patience!

Undead Giant was a PITA.

I used the whip cane for range and got 1 or 2 hits at most and ran away. Very long and rather boring fight.

Yeah I was trying to work out how to fight him as his swipes are so far reaching that I can't roll or dodge through him so all I can really do is try to get behind him for a few hits, run away and repeat. I'm using LHB +7 at the moment and don't know if there's a more effective weapon to take him on with.

Can he be parried?

Yeah, it's not easy! But worth doing.

To answer your NG+ question, yes - as soon as the credits have rolled you wake up again at Iosefka's Clinic. You'll have all your weapons, gear and materials from NG, but not keys etc.

The Chalice Dungeons you had open will even still be there, and since they don't scale you can level up to make them easier.

@coltrane No, you can't parry the Undead Giant. You can stagger him for a visceral, but I think you have to deal pretty heavy damage in a single chain of attacks to do it.

He does have a critical point. It's a lump that appears either on one of his legs or his shoulder which you can attack for a good amount of damage. If you burst this it'll cause him to keel over allowing you to get a few hits in.

Ah, ok. Thanks for the tip. I'll bear it in mind next time I fight him.

Ta. Does Insight carry over and do you get again from seeing bosses etc, the items respawn.

Tempted to eat all my MMK, GOW  etc and going on a spending spree. (I'm at 92 insight now)

Yep, Insight and Blood Echoes carry over, and you accrue them again just like you did in the first play through. In fact you get more Madman's Knowledges, as they tend to replace one-off items you got first time around.

I spend all my Insight on materials. As soon as I have enough Madman's/Great One's knowledges to hit 60 Insight I spend them on a Blood Rock. Once you've seen the Insight effects in the game once there's no real reason to have a high Insight counter.

Shaman Bone Blades are what people recommend for the Well. Stabbing one of them with it will make it attack the other.

You can gun parry them though.

I went down the well and decided it was not for me at that point so I continued on and near the end of the level you come to a ledge where the bottom of the well is.  I just stood on the ledge, lured them over (with a throwing knife) and picked them both off with the beast cutter.

Holy crap, I was just looking at the attire on the Wiki, and there is an entire set and an item of clothing I didn't know about:

Spoiler

You can buy G's set at the Insight bath after beating the game, and if you send Arianna to the clinic you can get her shoes from the Celestial Emissary mob she'll have been turned into

I also hadn't realised some of the costumes have distinct female variants:
