I decided to take a detour in the Forbidden Woods last night and:

Ended up in some weird cave with poisonous water. After dying once I went back in and eventually up a ladder which led to Iosefka's clinic back in Central Yarnham! Talk about surprised. I guess I shouldn't have been that shocked that she turned out to be an impostor but I did like that the weird cannibal guy that I met in the woods and ended up sending to the clinic, turned into some weird blobby alien looking thing! Dispatched him easily but decided against fighting Iosefka for now.

That's the area I was hinting that you should look for. It's proper mind blowing level design, and is such a good reward for inquisitive players.

Just press r1. You have to be quite close, and also in the correct spot around them (depending on whether it was a stagger / interrupt or back attack).

Ok thanks :)

Yeah it really is great level design when you think about how it links up with the area in question. It pulls you further into the mystery of what's actually going on as well.

worth putting points in Arcane which is a C scale?

If you want to use the tools yes, but your cane won't see any benefit. It'll only scale with arcane if you put an elemental gem in it that converts all its damage to fire/bolt/arcane and if you do it'll only scale off arcane so it'd get no benefit from skill.

Excellent progress in this today, having not been able to play since mid-week:

1, First three chalice dungeons done (which I'm massively over geared for, but I'm presuming I need to do all of the static ones in order to get to the high level ones that Alask and everyone else is working their way through)

2, Finally got across that cocking bridge with the Winter Lanterns and did all that cool stuff. I killed them all as I've finally got the dodge timing sorted.

3, Went back to a boss I'd missed (in UCW) and one-shot it. Had my usual trial and error process of "Hmm, I'll not use any vials and just see what the attacks are", "This is going well, I'll heal to see if there are any phases or anything", "Wow, this is going really well - I might do this", "FUCK, BOLT PAPER, SPAM R1, FORGET EVERYTHING YOU'VE LEARNED ON HER ATTACK PATTERNS AND BLINDLY MASH R1 TO VICTORY", Stand - arms aloft in the living room so the dog can bask in my glory.

4, Also got the achievement for all hunter tools - which was nice. Not that I've used any of them as I've only got 10 arcane.

DP is no more :)

Spoiler

Took me 5 attempts. It was only on the 5th attempt that I managed to stop rolling right into his swipe attack or ridiculous jump attack. Also, at about just under half health he seemed to go into an absolute fucking frenzy on virtually all the attempts I made at him. Was a bit lucky when I got him as I was convinced he was gonna get me again. The amount of times in the fight I had barely any health left were too many to mention.

Anyway, was good to clear out Yahar'gul. Also managed to find my way to Djura and get his Powder Keg badge which is cool :)

Onwards to CC!

Haven't felt the need to post one of these in a while but man, this felt good. Only took 3 or 4 tries but was expecting a lot more after the first couple. Scrappy as fuck but the job got done. This one had angry middle fingers at the TV and everything.

Only two bosses to go for my first ever platinum trophy. Then I might start thinking about an NG+.

Yeah also my favourite bit in the game......blows your mind utterly. this is why these games are so highly regarded.

Had a great day or so on this.

Managed to get up to OoK on the DLC. That is a brilliant, balletic fight - at least in the first phase. I've only fought him twice, and died fairly quickly to his second phase. Looking forward to getting back to it.

Also managed to take down Chalice Rom and Bloodletting Beast.

Rom had beaten me last time with his meteor showers, but 2nd time round i didn't take in the NPC, and was armed with a +10 Whirligig Saw. He lasted about 20 seconds. The damage from the L2 attack was unreal when coupled with Bolt paper.

Bloodletting Beast was a different story. Had the NPC with me who lasted a surprising amount of time. He died when BLB had about 1/3 health left. I assumed that that was it - he seemed nigh on impossible even with a distraction. I was shellshocked to beat him. It was by the skin of my teeth, with only 1 vial left, but my heart was absolutely pounding.

re: the DLC - i've rinsed everywhere apart from the ****ing well. I think i need to go back there before beating OoK otherwise it'll bug me forever.

I've massively enjoyed this second run through - even more than my first attempt. What. A. Game.

Looking forward to giving Battlefield a bit more attention soon though. And MGSV. And Fallout 4. And Uncharted Collection. And The Division. And Uncharted 4.

Bloody hell.

Yeah I bought BF4 recently, fully intending to get stuck into the multiplayer. But then Bloodborne came calling again and I've barely touched anything else since, apart from a bit of FIFA.

I was watching a bit of EpicNameBro's walkthrough of BB yesterday and he was talking about the "fear" aspect of the Souls games. Namely that the difficulty level is attached to this idea that the game experience engenders fear in the player who isn't used to it which makes the game appear more difficult than it actually is. If you see a great big, deformed creature lingering in the shadows it can make you instinctively want to back away which then means it can be harder so succeed. Experienced souls players don't seem to see the game as being necessarily difficult because they're used to this tense, adrenaline soaked atmosphere and tend to play more aggressively. Also, BB's regain system encourages this form of play.

It's an interesting thought and I think there's some truth in the "fear" aspect making the game seem more difficult than it is. I know that when I first played through it, I was playing with fear and conscious of feeling jumpy, wondering what was going to appear round the corner next. I think this definitely affects how successful you're going to be. Initially, I became fearful of losing echoes as well as I didn't know where the next lamp or shortcut was but now I just go with it and try to relax. Makes the game a lot more fun!

Also, you're a hunter..you don't fear the darkness. You embrace it.

And that's Old Hunters done. Thought OOK was fairly easy, for a final boss and compared to what was generally some fairly hard DLC, but still just as good as the rest of the pack, which was brilliant throughout. Shame that there will only be one released but if they're directing that energy towards DS3 instead then I suppose I can forgive them.

Playing through on NG++ was pretty tough going - in hindsight it definitely would have been much quicker to have started and levelled a new character and used that!

Might go and finish my NG++ main game playthrough before I call it a day!

It's amazing how comparatively easy BLB was after the trouble with Rom.

Cursed and Defiled Challice Unlocked. Though need items so Hinterlands and or the othe trees can explore.

Up to research hall in DLC spoilers

The fights against the Choir woman and the hunter in the chapel was brutal.

On on the lift up to RH - that was three scholars over a desicated corpse? It looked a bit like the woman in white. Given her state and the bells were they trying to rea her? Did they find her in the Catacombs? An old ones surrogate and that was source of blood?

That was definitely tough, especially after you think you'll have a bit of respite for a while after the previous fight.

Managed BLB first time, though it was a hectic fight.  Just need some materials to open up the other dungeons, so back to the DLC for a bit I think.

I'm finding OoK quite tough on NG++, having found him quite easy before. Four or five attempts so far.

Hmm, Martyr Logarius is a massive pain in the arse. Tried him twice already and I hit him about three times on the first attempt and got two shotted by those annoying fucking skull things on the second. Difficult to actually get near him.

Might leave him for now and try to finish off FW. Could always coop I suppose.

I do find a lot of the bosses difficult in this game. Only managed to defeat four on my own so far. The rest have been coop'ed.

Thanks for the tip. Yeah I've seen a video where the guy parries a lot and it worked well. For some reason though, I find getting parries and visceral attacks off quite tricky. Will try and practice.

Seems you have to time your dodges well and use the towers for protection as well. I guess it's a case of picking your moments when there's a window to attack and learning his moves.
